Best 182/172/197 engine combination?

  Cooksport Fleet
Had a look on search before anyone asks, but im not gonna sit here and look for hours on end to get my answer.

Are the heads interchangeable between the ph1 172, ph2 172 and the 182?

But which has the best block out of the 172's and 182 and which is the best head?

E.g will a 172 ph 1 head fit onto a 182 bottom end?

Whats the ideal combination?

I heard that the PH1 heads are better as they have better porting. I don't know how much truth there is in this though.

Use the 197 head for its massive inlet ports and then make use of the 197 inlet manifold which is miles better than the 172 item.

teeeeeny tiny exhaust ports though (emisions :( ) Probably would be the best if you replicated the exhaust ports to be like ph1, but I'd want the fully variable inlet cam too though which 100% means a different ECU if you put it in a mk2 , and the pistons to match the head, in whatever block suits needs best (gearbox fitment etc). With no porting allowed I'd use the 172 ph1 head

The exhaust parts are realyl really small yeah BUT i'd still think the gains from inlet side and plenum would make it worthwhile. Also, it'd look trick in a mk2 bay!

Air out needs to have good flow though really. larger ports would make a difference. Regulations ruin everything

So what you guys are saying is that I could put the 197 head, do some porting, and just bolt in on my 172 engine together with the 197 intake manifold and the whole thing would work with no issues and that I could see some gains? Would DBW system (I have a phII) work flawless?

wish it was all this simple.. the 197 makes pretty big power with these small outlet ports/exhaust.

when going for a change like this i would expect a heap of problems. They have researched (probably through lots of $$$$$) a way of pushing 200 hp through very small exhaust ports .

I would'nt expect adding the two is going to give you any gains

Why?

It should work as normal dude with the 197 being DBW. Map and air temp sensors are the same too.

Im gonna have a pop at this i think, anyone know of a 197 head and intake going for sale?

Edit: Standard ecu be able to run all this?, and will the 197 head just bolt on, or will it need modification?

stock ECU will run it if you use 172 cams, VVT pulley and actuator.

It should just bolt on. I've not done every check possible but the head gasket is the same. You will lower compression by just fitting the 197 head though
