BIGASH/FF-Racing X85 Clio Cup Racer Project

I think for a racecar I would just go bodies TBH if the rules allow? but it will be interesting to see how you get on with the RS2, certainly makes for an easy car to drive quickly.

Nothing to be sorry about mate, the week before it let go i'd just ordered up a new head gasket, a set of supertech valves (got them at same time as Mike was ordering some to save on postage), some arp rod bolts, some arp head studs, a new cambelt and a new aux belt for it and bought the 197 cams and was planning on taking it off the road after CSS but before our ring trip in october to do all the work on it, so only difference is that I now have to do it slightly sooner, literally hasnt cost us a penny as every single thing we need to replace we already had bought.
Have gone for a 182 manifold as well at the same time and a sports cat so its MOT legal.
Just deciding wether or not to throw a set of rings into it too as Ive got a set spare on the shelf that I was going to use in my turbo at some point but could whack them in this instead I guess as it will be so trivial to do, but the old ones seem fine so cant decide.

Tbh Ollie82 and I's racecar is going to be a rather budget build with simple stuff just to get out there racing. So spending £2,500+ on a ITB kit was really not an option. An RS2 extra/vibra engine mounts/slimline fan/lightweight carbon bonnet and all the other gubbins for £1200 was pushing it, as we were happy on a relatively standard engine with a quaife and AST's with some good geometry.

Plans sound good for the 172 also! Should hopefully make some good figures once it's all back together!

At least its all easily reversible if you need the money back or decide to go bodies later on and the RS2 tends to hold value quite well.

It was 169 when we started on it, with matched inlets and an exhaust and filter, so if we can see well into the 180s I will be happy and if it gets nearer 190 I will be over the moon considering we havent had to compromise at all on daily drivability etc

Flol

Stick loads of sensors on it, the usual things like GPS for cornering G's etc but also tyre temp probes that read the temp on 3 points across the tyre during cornering, and potentiometers that show them how far and how fast the shocks are moving etc, then they can tell from that if you want more camber or less roll resistance or whatever and can then modify the shocks or roll bars or spring rates to suit.

Great thread James, and no I haven't read it all, I'm not mad;)

Love the car, was good to have a nosey at it yesterday. Reading through some bits and watching the Anglesey video really makes me want to get involved. One day maybe. I'll definitely try get to a race to further persuade me. The Oulton one sadly is on a day I can't make. If you do any trackdays over summer drop me a text and I'll try come along if I'm free, more so I can have a passenger ride than test mine out a bit more...

Thanks again for yesterday too, takes the worry out of rocking up and not being allowed in.

PS if anyone hasn't seen this car, it's fooking awesome if you hadn't already worked it out

So short answer if you want a road car that isn't a compromise, spend a s**t ton with these guys lol.

Thanks for that Chip, it makes for a really good read and brings up a lot of what Simon and I discussed :)

I went to meet Simon on Tuesday and I'm very grateful for you recommending him! I can see what you mean and the guy is like a sponge of knowledge :) I learnt a lot and came away with a few ideas of how to move forwards which is what I wanted! If I go ahead with the nitrons (should know on Monday) then Simon is going to do an appraisal after I have given the car a brief drive and then work out a plan of action from there. We have discussed all the varying options and while I would love to go wild and get everything peachy its not realistic at the moment so we are going to get the car running as well as possible with the budget and go from there. As you say Simon is a fan of the Nitrons so is going to help out getting the kit working perfectly on the car. It was amazing how much I learnt in the space of a few hours.
Do they have a test track nearby then? Sorry James for messing up your thread, but I need to know.
No worries mate :), Simon is definitely worth a visit even if just for a chat. You're always welcome to stay at mine if you do end up venturing ooop north ;) As Chip says he has a small track he uses for testing but a lot of it is done on the bench as it where. Shame I can't make it to CSS as could do with a catch up, lots to tell you!
Certainly looks like they know their stuff ehh
Yes Mark pretty incredible to be fair so much stuff I never even realised! Will be interested to see how much it improves the pace of my car :)

Thanks Danny it was great to meet you :) As I say your more than welcome to come to one of the races but once you come to one I imagine you will end up racing your car! I certainly will let you know mate :) Haha you're always welcome!

They do stuff on both road and race cars mate :) It depends how far you go with everything but yeah it's not cheap although it is good value for money when you think about how much can be wasted on test days trying to get a good setup and changing spring rates etc whereas this uses the accurate data to get it in the correct ball park and then you do some time on track tweaking the adjustable ARB's, damper settings and geo to get the sweet spot :)

TBH its massive overkill for a roadcar, that just happened to be what we wanted to do in the article for the magazine as most of our readership have road cars not race cars, its mainly race cars they do though as obviously not many people have that sort of budget for their road car.

James, Simon is one of the cleverest people I have ever met and Ive worked in a lot of industries where degrees and PHDs are the norm, he started cornering force because he couldnt find anyone to do what he wanted them to with his own race car, he's in the very lucky position of already being very financially secure from other ventures, so he gets to pick and choose the work he wants to do rather than needing to do if that makes sense? Consequently he has a passion for any job he does take on that you are unlikely to find elsewhere.

If I could afford it, I would take all my cars to him!

Chip, they don't do a RS2 for the ph1 yet do they? Looking at getting matched inlets on mine and one of Fred's cams. Got a 182 manifold now so hope to see a 5-10 bhp jump and some more torque. Good setup? Sorry to crash the thread James but need an idea before I shell out.

The normal RS2 will fit a phase 1, you would just have to accept that you would end up with an idle thats slightly higher on your engine when hot as there is no ICV port on it, so you would have to set the idle on the throttle stop screw instead, no real drama, but depends how fussy you are about "factory" idle or not.

If you block off the ICV pipe on your current setup and set the idle on the idle screw, thats what it will be like, so its easy for you to test if you would find it acceptable or not.

failing that, you could modify the RS2 to have a ICV port Im sure, but it would be a fair bit of aggro to do and get looking neat etc.

Yes I totally agree with you his knowledge is incredible! I also really like the way he works and he was suggesting various things to save money rather than spend it which is always nice :)

Yes I was lucky enough to see his car, it's a very nice bit of kit! Yeah I know what you mean and he does seem really keen to see the progress we can make with the car and is confident of what we can achieve.

Cool stuff :)

Ask him what his feelings would be on doing an article about it, and if he is up for it I will chat to FCM about it, Ive written for them before so they are obviously happy with my style/standards etc so I should think it would be a go-er

Re: James/BigAsh 182 Race Car by TDF... It doesn't get much better than this! *Pic He

Yes Chip I certainly will do, I meant to ask him the other day but we both ended up running out of time! I am speaking to him early next week so will discuss it with him :) I'm sure he would be up for it but I know he is really busy at the moment! Thanks again mate

Re: James/BigAsh 182 Race Car by TDF... It doesn't get much better than this! *Pic He

Not much to update really, My garage has leaked water while we have had the heavy rain which has somehow got into the electrics so I have spent the last few nights and today re-wiring the whole garage! Waiting to hear back from Nitron on Monday to know what is happening with that! Got all my hopes pinned on them really as AST never got back to me the couple of times I spoke with them when they said they would call me back which is a shame! Getting a bit tight for time really so hopefully get sorted soon.

Been working through a few other jobs on the car, got rid of some of the slop in the gear linkage by replacing some of the parts. Realised that the pin between the linkage and the gearbox was a short shift one so that could have been what was causing the crunching, it was naff quality and was causing quite a lot of play so that has been replaced by OEM. Since the linkage has been moved back in the car it has never self centred properly and this along with the play meant I sometimes got 1st or 5th instead of 3rd which is pretty risky if I don't realise before pulling the clutch up. I have also struggled with the linkage been too far back in the car so I have rotated the gearstick 180 degree's and it now sit's in a much better position and now bounces back into neutral so along with less play should be a workable solution for the rest of the season until I can relocate it further forward in the car :)

I have cut out the foglight surrounds to get more airflow to the brakes and got a set of aerocatches to fit to the bumper. Got some spare 182 stub axles so will refit the correct ones tomorrow. Then the car is just going to sit on axle stands until some new suspension turns up. I will update once I know what is happening with the suspension as that will affect the plans for the next month or so with the car!

I will get some photo's tomorrow when i'm working on the car to show the bit's and bob's I have been doing :)

Ash these people must have that much business that they don't give a f**k about customers new or old, this is my impression of the people I have dealt with in Motorsport in general, arrogance and a total lack of customer service seem to be the norm for most of these loser company's.

The ONLY exceptions for me are Fred from off here who is a TOP chap, John Harris at demon tweeks who has always been on the ball for me, Ktech who are excellent and go out of their way to make sure I get my parts and of course last but not least Northampton Motorsport who are superb and very knowledgable. Everyone else I have had the misfortune of having to deal with, well they didn't get my money and never will as I vote with my wallet. As a customer you have ALL the power because you have the money, remember that and don't let yourself be pissed around.

Mark.

Re: James/BigAsh 182 Race Car by TDF... It doesn't get much better than this! *Pic He

Yes Mark I totally agree its crazy! Most of these companies have great products or offer a good service but I guess I am a small fish to them and I can only try so many times until I go elsewhere. It's a shame though :(

Yeah got to agree with you about Fred! John Harris has been good for me also but some of the staff in customers services are totally lacking in common sense and have really frustrated me recently. K-tec have always been pretty good to me too :)

It's just difficult as AST seem the only company who have a decent kit off the shelf for the Clio, The Nitron's would be great but we will have to see if they can get me a kit made in time :)

Re: James/BigAsh 182 Race Car by TDF... It doesn't get much better than this! *Pic He

Just a quick question. Is there an underlining problem which is causing you to go through top mounts? Or is it just running road suspension on track is killing them.

Re: James/BigAsh 182 Race Car by TDF... It doesn't get much better than this! *Pic He

Sorry I probably wasn't clear it is the top bearing in the coil over that failed not the top mount :)

Yeah I have done for now mate :) I think it looks good although I'm slightly worried as to how much stuff could find it's way in and towards the belt's. I think I might get the fibreglass out and start making a cover to go around the rad and stop anything from getting into the belts :)
