BIGASH/FF-Racing X85 Clio Cup Racer Project

i`m assuming SPL will be doing the dipping???

are you drilling all the tubes in your cage or will they??

i hope it goes better than my friends WRC escort shell... within a couple of years it was rotting between panels where un-neutralized chemical had sat......

as for not E-dipping?? is that safe?? there are so many cavaties inside sills/chassis rails that the first time you have a wet race things will start to rust!.. the reason they rarely do racecars is that most of the stuff they do gets used for a couple of seasons then sold.... haha

When i went to spl they explained each tube has to be drilled at each end ..6mm from memory.. I can confirm the escort wrc shell had the same done to it...

  Schma Schme 1.6l
I had a evo shell i brought once, it had been dipped and then e coated. I had it for 3 years, left it outside uncovered, not a bit of rust other than minor surface rust.

It would rot to bits without the Ecoat. With or without it being painted quickly.

Utter waste of time at club level but thats just my opinion, i prefer driving than fiddling.

Surely it will struggle to shave 20kilo off the wieght. It only dropped 16kilo off the evo.

Not sure what a clio shell weighs.

Guess It could drop 20kilo or more if left in the acid for a prolonged time, but to not Ecoat would be daft as the thing will fall apart in no time.

I could understand the reason for holes if its not welded properly in the first place, but....

If I was going to go this far (for a time I did consider it) I would go the full hog and get it E-coated, you'll never be able to get paint everywhere if it's done conventionally so it would be feasible for corrosion to set in somewhere without you knowing about it, granted it's a race car so perhaps not that big a deal.
Yes I originally was the same and wanted to E-coat it, SPL have said they never E coat the race cars so I am only going on what i've been told. They just advised as I was concerned about the box sections to get a cavity protector into them as all the box sections on the clio have access to them anyway.

Yes Stu it's SPL, They want me to drill them and yes you are correct it is 6mm. They have advised me to bake the car in the spray booth to burn off any residual chemicals before painting the shell.

They tell me it is and that is what they are recommending to me. Very true and that is what I said to them lol!

Mmm I did initially think the same but have been told it won't! It's the usual thing of everyone has a different opinion lol!

Waste of time deep down I mostly agree with but I want to do it, will just have to see what happens :)

Im only going on what they told me when i went over to meet them..

Dip+neutralize

Take shell home for mods/repairs

2nd dip+neutralize

Ecoat dip+final rinse

£2500.. That was a year or so ago now....

It's a very tempting thought to have a proper blank canvass to build from, as I mentioned I did give it some thought when my new shell arrived under sealed and painted (had hoped it would of just been in primer) but when I spoke to a few folk combined with what I read online, I figured it was an extra expense and hassle that I didn't need. I know as we'll as anyone what it's like once you get an idea in your head and then folk try to talk you out if it but I can't help think that 1k could be put to more use on other areas, once you include priming and painting it all inside/out/underneath even at mates rates that could be another 6-700 odd quid easily, in a bodyshop it'll be way more. Your almost at the cost of a gripper gearkit ;)

Yeah I know what you mean mate :) I will have a good think
There a nice bunch of people i found them very helpful..

But mine will be plastic media blasted once it gets stripped back down again..
Yes Stu they did seem very helpful via phone and email

I did look into this but it won't remove the undersell/seam sealer :(

I assumed it would just be bare metal. I wouldn't imagine they would cost too much, but like you say, with cage etc...

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!

think you're mixing info up a bit. You drill small holes in tubes that are to have both ends sealed, so you don't get a pressure/gas build up inside the tube when finalising a weld. Without a vent, the weld can sometimes blow out.

I think what they'll be advising of, is that these holes will be present in the majority of cages, rather than having to drill them for the process they're doing

Just less than 1k for a bare shell but as I say would be a few stages back from now :(

Nah Dan Stu is correct, the T+C's state you have to have 6mm holes in all the tubes and box sections to allow the fluids in and back out! It's probably the biggest put off for me!

I thought mine would have been in primer but looks like it was on the line when they called it a day for the mk2 and it had been fully under sealed and painted, if you ordered another one it might come in primer but there's no way to know, the supplying dealer didn't know and there's no way to ask when you place the order. I can't remember what the full retail price was but I got a good discount ;) the 182 shell with flat boot floor was £800 odd more!

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
I think you are nuts dipping it TBH, its a "cool" thing to do, but the gains are going to be pretty minimal and the cost of it would be half of a decent gearbox.

To me dipping is something you do if money is no object, but as you are now on a budget, it doesnt make sense.

  Clio172cup rally car
I seriously wouldn't dip it, I know it's hard work but just go at it with the heat gun and get all the underseal off then get it sandblasted to take back to metal, I really wanted to dip my shell when I started but I just didn't want to drill the cage

you could get a sequential gear box for about 5k and then come and run in the eurosaloons, thats a very good championship with about 8 or 9 ex clio cup cars all same spec so you get proper good close races.

my car is being rebuilt to be same power/weight as the new cup racers with a little more hp as the new 1's are better in some areas.

all the eurosaloon races are double headers over a weekend with friday testing, its a hoot.

not that the tin tops isn't good, from looking on here its pretty good. its simply a case of different spec/power/weight cars, so if you can afford the best car and can pedal ok, you have a good chance of doing well.

surely on that premise... (if you wanted to go to that championship)
the sensible choice would be sell the race-car in parts banking a fair bit, save the money from dipping and put it all towards an ex-cup car...

While James clearly ISNT a complete moron, he does like to act like one when it comes to pointlessly holding onto his car and throwing good money after bad, so I doubt you'll see him getting rid of it just yet even if it makes good sense to do so, lol

I've been making a spreadsheet of parts I want for mine (longer trumpets, new injectors, another remap, cams, cambelt, dephaser, plexi windows, kw/ast coilovers) and really struggling not to just strip it for parts and buy something like this - http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/...ing-honda-integra-race-car--5499-o-n-o/848569

Theres so many cheap pre-built track cars these days

Trouble is I also suffer from insane OCD and I like my own car because I know every single nut and bolt that's gone into it..

lol, sounds like a man after my own heart, i am sure i have a 172 somewhere with a bucket load of parts to one day build a full car again

exactly my thoughts, if i do come to strip mine i know who to message with the parts for sell, sound like i have nearly all your list... brand new...lol

  Cup In bits
Bit off topic but without reading your whole thread PH-Reebone, did you see gains from fitting your RS ram inlet? was there other mods fitted at the same time? Cheers

Glad to see this being resurrected so thoroughly - but it really only needed a new bottom end ..... ;)

Its surprising how it all mounts up, the problem is the more you look into racing (I assume) the costs get very large !!

True Tony, but its still expensive. The best and cheapest way is to buy a car already done.
I am waiting for 1st April to buy yours again lol

This may sound very stupid as i know racing isn't cheap anyway, but as much as dipping it would be a very cool thing to do, i'm not sure i could do it racing in an amateur series, after seeing some of the bumps from other cars last season, imagine spending thousands on having the shell dipped etc and then in the first race of the season someone takes you out and totals the shell, i'd cry! at least as it is now it would just be a case of sourcing a new shell and cage and swapping parts over. but then again i'm a pessimist and always think worst case scenario!

Do as chip said, spend it on the gearbox! atleast if the worst happens you would most likely be able to swap it over to a new shell and not be at a HUGE loss!
