Burpspeed Version 2: Race Car Build

  182cup & 172 racecar
Hi Tony,

Didn't realise you had a build blog. Car looks really good. You should have the longer extensions by now. Best of luck when you go to Tour-De-Force for mapping :)

John.
Hi John,

Yes extensions arrived and fitted thank you, also the airbox back plate arrived today and also fitted(tight fit indeed).Trying to measure (guess it) was not easy. Many thanks for all your help.Matt at TDF wants to try the shorter extensions if we have time on Sat just to see the difference, then I will send them back.

Looks good, your niose in the engine, there are thrust bearings in next to the crank it sounds like either one has gone missing or worn out some how, has the engine been apart? may have not gone back in. they are made so that there is something for the clutch to lean against when pressed etc.
The engine has done 108k and never been apart. We chose to use that one at first as it was well serviced with new belt and W/pump etc and went well in my old track car. Never had a problem before. We will be stripping it down at some stage to have a nose

Looks like the Focus coil pack from what i can see? Which Ford is it off?
Most Fords, Ka, Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo etc

Sneeky peek of the car on the rollers. Proper updates to follow.

Small update:

Thursday, 11th February 2010 - Airbox

After some careful measurements (guess work) we ordered some longer extensions for the bodies. This is mainly for packaging reasons as the airbox was jut too tight a fit. They will bring the airbox into a better position on the engine.

1826.jpg

The air horns that screw to the extensions are 60mm long. We got hold of a back plate for the airbox that was this deep.

Fitted to the trumpets and the air temp sensor fitted into the side of the box. A reducer fitted to the end of the airbox to a pipercross cone filter. The ali tube is a length of intercooler pipe from an old Subaru Time Attack car that Powerstation had lying around.

very impressed with the work that has gone into this

i will also be very interested to see the results of using this setup

i was toying with the idea of something similar (airbox over the trumpets, and then a air feed coming from the passenger headlight) but wasnt sure what effects it would have

mind you it cant be much worse that what i have at the min, my bonnet sits right over the front of the trumpets

lol, I dropped it off today so it should be there, I HOPE!

Not sure when Curtis is starting on it, im in no rush to get it back as Im away for two weeks from SUnday :(

Sunday 14th Febuary 2010 - A Nightmare Weekend

Friday afternoon we loaded the car onto the trailer and set off for Tour-de-Force in Kimbolton.

2978.jpg
2980.jpg

We arrived and off loaded the very spluttery car. The car was having difficulty running and was misfiring. We quickly whipped out number 1 spark plug and it was very badly fouled up. Matt at Tour-de-Force quickly loaded another base map to stop it choking itself to death. It instantly ran better.

0065.jpg

The car was then taken around to have a quick alignment done on it at a local specialist. After a long winded process of setting the throttle linkage up and ensuring everything was working ok, Matt drove it into his dyno cell to start the calibration.

It didn't like that! Something wasn't right. It just wouldn't drive straight on the rollers and kept trying to jump out. All thoughts of a curry that evening went out of the window. After several attempts to sort it by swapping tyres around and giving it a ton of toe in, it still wasn't happening. It was too dangerous to even try and do any work. We called it a night and returned the following morning, stuck it back on the trailer and went back to the workshop with our heads low.

After 4 hours spent in the workshop we were back on the trailer and heading on up to Tour-de-Force. We had checked and double checked everything. Nothing was majorly wrong but we made small adjustments to a lot of things, Subframe alignment, steering rack mountings etc. We took the car for a little test around the car park for 10 mins.

Danny had come along to lend a hand and we used his camber gauge to realign it, the work we'd in the workshop had moved everything. Then the moment of truth. We tried it again on the rollers. It wasn't perfect but a 100 times better. Matt could now get on and cal it. A huge relief. Strapped down and off we go. After an hour or so the car was running well at low speed/light throttle. Running closed loop fuel correction the AFR was very accurate. With no cam shifter running, a basic spark map and rough fuel map we did some power runs. After checking the cam shifter was working and spending some time making some changes to the wiring loom, we called it a night. No where near finished but a nice safe setup so we can test at Bedford this Friday. After that we will go back to see Matt at Tour-De-Force to get the cal finished off and have some final figures. One problem after another but we are getting there.

Myself and Tony would like to thank Matt @ TDF for his hard work, well into the early hours. A true legend.

Wednesday 17th Febuary 2010 - Brakes and Stickers

With the first track test at Bedford a few days away, we are trying to get as much done as we can. We have been driving the car around on an old set of very rusty front discs, not a lot of good for circuit use. Using the standard calipers the choice of disc and pad was simple. High carbon brake discs from Brembo and Performance Friction (PF97) carbon metallic brake pads.

1837.jpg

The dash top was fitted. We do need to finish tidying some wiring but this will do for now

1840.jpg
1843.jpg

We made a start on stickering up the car. Sponsors and supplier logo's as well as some safety and series required decals.

Have fun with the PF97's... Bye Bye white paint work hahahaa!!

The braking performance is awesome though, amazing for a standard caliper set-up.

Keep an eye on your discs, I went through 3 sets of front discs with these pads
