Buying my first 172

  03 plate vts
hello guys new to this site, been a vts owner for the past 2 years and im finally chopping her in for a 172. wanted a 172 for ages and now in 20 i can now afford the group 16 insurance.

im looking for a little newbie advice :)
what things should i look out for when buying a 172? what things are prone to going wrong? the car im looking at is totaly standard which is a good start and is on a 53plate covered 82,000 miles cambelt done at 70,000 the seller has said the engine mounts have just started to knock under brisk acceleration in 1st and sometimes 2nd and At the last MOT, it picked up advisories for a deteriorating exhaust mount and one of the rear brake calipers. also the air con is not working.... but dispite all this its a very good loooking clean car. are the mounts a common problem and what are rapair costs going to be? or should i stay clear of it...

any help will be great guys

thanks George

Welcome.

Cambelts by a reputable company, and a good service history are the main things.

Engine mounts are quite common to go too, do a quick search and you should get a good idea of cost as it is very common.

Exhausts are quite weak too, so the mounts going shouldn't set you back much if the exhaust itself is okay.

Do you know who did the cambelt?

the seller says he has a massive wadge of receipts going back to 2003 detailing every service and every bit of work it's had done, but dont mention the history.

no his not mentioned who has done the cam belt, ill make surew to find out tonight when i see the car. my friends got a 182 and the dephaser pully went... but that sounded like a tractor, will the cambelt being changed prevent this?

Spend more money and buy one without problems!

What you save on the purchase price will only be lost on fixing things!!!

You have to think:
-How much is that scrape going to cost to fix when it starts bothering me?
-How much are the engine mounts plus labour?
-How much is a full service?
-How much is the air con to fix?

you get the idea...

okay thanks for the advice, there are cleaner ones around with without problems but they are higher miles 100,000 ect i have around £2300 to spend

Is 100,000 not alot on a small hothatch though? dont get me wrong i would too if we was talking diesels... I dont really have much experiance of 172 engines...

Nope. Mine is now on just under 140,000 miles and I give it hell. As long as it has a fully service history, then the engines will go on and on.

Well, I would have one that had done 120,000 but had a superb history over one that had done 60,000 miles and a speckled history for the same money.

If they are looked after there is no reason why they won't go on and on. Fletch's must be pushing 140,000 now.

get a ph1? some minters for 2k and I think they're nicer (I've had 2 before my cup). Just the dash is grim.

Everyone has their own taste, but it’s fair to say a vts as mint as mine is extremely hard to come by. Dont get me wrong saying its the best saxo you will ever see may of been a overstatement but I think you would struggle to find a better condition one than mine on pistonheads at the moment...
