Can i remove 182 oil filter without droppng oil

Morning guys as title really
Will I be faced with a big mess if I don't drain the oil when removing filter?
Changed oil couple days ago but couldn't get filter off

Now have a decent wrench so ideally just want to swap the filter over and leave the fresh oil in there!

Well that was a silly thing to do wasn't it, should of just waited.

If car has been sat for a few days or so you "shouldn't" loose much.

Yes ideally would have waited but needed the car and never saw the filter removal as being an issue 😂

Will jack front of car up again too which should help
Just cant be bothered with dropping oil again and needing another sump washer!

You don't need to replace the sump washer

You'll dribble a little bit of oil out the filter, but nothing much - should clean up fine.
You'll need to double check the engine oil level after swapping the filter.

However, what wrench do you have? A number will not fit without wrecking the sensors in the process. A fluted tool which sits on top of the filter of a stap tool (not chain ; it's too thick) seem to be the best ways to go about it.

Thanks chaps ive tried a couple of different strap wrenches but no joy

Im going to hopefully get it off with one of the 3 leg universal ones that you use with a ratchet (link below)

I find it crazy that you just completed the job without getting the filter off. Just hammer a thin crew driver through the thing and lever it off. Dead easy.

Anyway as said you won't loose too much, will maybe need a small top up after its done

Don't hammer a screwdriver through it. If it shears off you'll be left with a piece you can hardly get hold of.

It won't shear. Hammer a lon screwdriver through it so it comes out the other side then use that as a lever. I've done it a good few times and never had any issue. I'd be concerned if the filter was to shear..

It's a pretty much last resort thing.

I've never had trouble with a decent filter wrench.

Yes I always start with a filter rench but had to do the screwdriver trick on a Clio trophy and r26. Think the filters had been on for a good while

What's so crazy about it!
I drained the oil from Sump them came to remove filter but it wouldn't budge
That's generally the order you do an oil change on a car

Have put the fresh oil in and now hoping to swap filter out when I get suitable tool for the job etc

Go find one of these, it's supposedly the tits for removing the oil filter

I've got a few filter wrenches and sometimes have to bust out Philip and the Thor. I'm sure some people use the wrench to fit the filters because they're tighter than a nuns bifter.

I can appreciate where James is coming from. I once tackled a very very stubborn filter and the screwdriver eventually tore around the filter and left the base and a mangled mess of metal. Luckily it was just on an old block and I managed to chisel it off.

Bought a 3 leg type this morning and off it cam
Was very very tight though

No oil lost either which is a bonus

Full Service complete
Rear brakes changed
All caliper sliders checked and re-greased
Car washed, polished and waxed

No I think it's something to do with the heat or something??
Happened all the time on my last car, it got serviced 2 times a year so the filter hadn't been on for very long, always primed the seal with a little old engine oil, always installed the filter by hand, never over-tightened it.

Every f**king time the filter needed a removal tool to get it off as it was on so tight.

Done that before myself on a 306, was absolutely fuming as I needed the car to get to work the next morning.
Managed to get a chain-whip style one on the remnants and shift it off, was so relieved!!!
