Carbon coming out the exhaust

Was parked up with the engine running yesterday and noticed there was black cabron on the floor coming from my exhaust! Anyone know why this might be?

Looked under the bonnet and the airfilter had worked itself free so air was just free flowing into the inlet manifold. Could this have caused it or are they seperate things?

Pobs just a mix of water, dirt, rust and carbon thats a natural by-product of combustion.
