Dad has removed the gearbox as it needs refurbing/reconditioning. One of my dads work colleagues has a friend who is hopefully going to do all of the work required on the gearbox.

These bushes on the front anti roll bar will also be replaced as well as any other worn/broke bits we may come across.

Gearbox was re-fitted on same day, found out it is a JC5-089 type which means it is a phase 1 172 gearbox if i'm not mistaken.

Checked the clutch. Not worth replacing as has loads of life left, only done around 5,000 miles and is Valeo type.

Rear crankshaft seal checked, luckily doesn't need replacing.

We also fixed a slightly broken/damaged wire which we found in the engine bay. The wire was on the passenger side near the ECU area.

Dad also found 2 loose bolts near/in the battery tray so these were sorted out.

Drivers side outer cv boot replaced. Photo of old boot. Unfortunately no photos of the new boot on actual shaft etc.

I tried my best to clear the drainage holes/slits along both sills. However, i think the drivers side may be missing 1 or 2 due to a previous repair i am not entirely sure.

New centre exhaust mount fitted. Exhaust is not rattling against the rear beam & rear bumper now etc, it is sitting nice and high.

Bottom ball joint pinch bolt loose on passenger side, previous owner must of forgot to tighten it up! Was only hanging on by a couple of threads. So this was obviously sorted out 😲

Once everything was back together the car started first time. The only issue was that the gear linkage rod was slightly out so we couldn't get 2nd gear. This was quickly resolved as it was only slightly out and my dad had marked everything up before he removed the gearbox etc. So 5 minutes later 2nd gear was back.

I dont have many photos but i think this was the part which needed adjusting slightly, i may be wrong.

Much better. All bulbs are now matching + working  and the fried egg look of the indicator bulb has been massively reduced (y)

Drivers side was easy to do as my clio doesn't have all aircon pipes etc. The passenger side was much harder as the induction kit + fuse box was in the way. So i removed the induction kit to fit the main beam bulbs + side light bulbs. I just about managed replacing the indicator bulb, without removing anything.

All bulbs tried and tested during & after fitting. Hopefully they last.

Sound deadening sheets also applied to areas around the boot:

IMG_2687.JPG

Car is a lot better to drive now, i will also be adding more of this sound deadening stuff to the roof, under the rear seats and behind the rear door cards.

Plan is to fit the rest of the interior as it will make the car easier to live with on a daily basis and it will free up some much needed space in the shed.

Thanks for reading.

Dont forget to seal the bottom of the door card if you dont want a Renault pond

Thanks, i will ask my dad if he did this. As while he was refitting the door cards, i was applying the sound deadening to the rear sections of the car.

No speakers where present in the door cards so they may be coming off in the near future if required to do so.

There’s a line of black sticky sealant going around the bottom of the door card, if it’s all worn away you can use butyl tape. There’s a good thread on here somewhere showing how to do it.

Hello,

I have continued to try and remove as much as the sticky stuff from the interior plastics:
IMG_2723.JPG

Drivers side still has some strange residue, which just isn't budging? So this will have to do as i have tried numerous times now.

Cleaned and re-fitted the spare wheel etc:
IMG_2725.JPG

IMG_2730.JPG

Purchased and fitted some new front speakers as mine were missing. I also purchased some for the rear. However, these are not needed as the original renault speakers are present and working fine. I also got myself some carpet tape for the drivers floor mat as it was sliding about too much for my liking. The tape has worked really well and i recommend it too anyone having the same problem:
IMG_2757.JPG

More sound deadening sheets added:
IMG_2761.JPG

IMG_2792.JPG

After trying multiple different things to fix the original head unit, i just couldn't get the CODE to go on the display. I tried pretty much everything. So i had to fit this aftermarket one, which actually came with my brothers Clio 182. Even though i'm not that keen on it, it does the job and it has bluetooth which is decent. Plus it was quite difficult to fit as there isn't much room behind for the loom etc:
IMG_2795.JPG

When checking the rear speakers i was quite surprised how filthy they had gotten over the years so i decided to give them a quick hoover:
IMG_2779.JPG

IMG_2786.JPG

much better :)
Speaker grills also cleaned (both sides).

Rest of the interior is coming along nicely. New boot mat fitted:

Forgot to mention that i have finally managed to sort out all of the paperwork for the car. It is now in chronological order and in a nice, bright red folder. I must admit this took a while and was quite tedious but it is worth doing in my opinion. I took inspiration from a couple of members on here:

Finally:

This morning, the car was dropped off at Ren-Sport based in Middlesbrough as i think the car has a fault with the clutch/flywheel or something related to the 2? The best way i can describe it, is that the car judders when setting of in 1st gear. It is quite jerky & shakey? Also the clutch is making a scraping/scratching/screeching noise when changing gears up or down. I am not sure. But it could really be a mixture of different things like the clutch cable or crank sensor for example etc etc. I do know the car has a misfire but that only really happens when the car is first started up and usually disappears after a minute or 2 of driving. I can't figure it out so i decided to take it a specialist as it isn't nice to drive anymore & it doesn't sound healthy. Fingers crossed its something cheap & easy!

2 Months later...

Quite a lot has gone on with the Clio so i will try to compress it as much as i can without leaving out any key events/details.

So starting off from where i left off last time, it turns out the clutch had completely gone/destroyed itself. So, i got this replaced with a standard Valeo unit.
49981677662_d18c2ef4ee_o.jpg

After getting the clutch fitted i decided i wanted to sell the car as my insurance coming up to an end. Plus i was getting some very good insurance quotes on some BMW E39s >£1000. The idea was that i wanted something big, with 5 doors, diesel, automatic and it had to have a high spec. A BMW E39 530d literally ticked all my boxes. I had never had a big car before, i have only ever driven about small, old, rattly & cheap hatchbacks

However, all of this did not go to plan. The car was listed for sale on Gumtree, this was because i just wanted a quick sale and i was still in two minds of whether i should keep or sell the car. After a couple of days of the listing being live, the car began to play up. I should of just took down the advert but instead i just reduced the price. After a lot of time wasters on Gumtree, i finally took down the listing and i decided that i am just going to keep the little Clio and get it fixed properly. In all honesty, i think it was just the complete wrong timing for myself to be selling a car in general.

Misfiring issue was getting worse (again). Our cheap eBay chinese scanner was just bringing up the same code as last time?
IMG_3283.JPG

However, the lambda sensor was only replaced a couple of months ago which is strange? Something must be causing the lambda sensor to keep malfunctioning? Air leak? Not fueling properly?

A couple of months back, i had purchased a set of new NGK PFR6E-10 3688 spark plugs, some new genuine Renault ignition leads & a second hand coil pack. These were all fitted on the 15-06-2020. Misfiring issue was still present.

Misfiring issue got so bad that i literally couldn't even drive up a steep bank. I had to constantly change up and down the gears etc.
2 days later (17-07-2020) a set of second hand injectors were fitted & the fuel pump was removed from the tank & cleaned. I think it turned out injector 3 was at fault.

18-06-2020: All relays out from under the bonnet, cleaned the terminals, checked wiring and cleaned the earth near the passenger side headlamp.

25-06-2020: Local garage sealed an air leak on the engine. However, they found a crack on the manifold. Maybe this is causing the lambda to malfunction? The car does slightly hunt at idle however the needle doesn't move to be honest? Revs sometimes drop when setting off, have stalled about 5 or so times because of this?

01-07-2020: New Febi Bilstein crank sensor fitted. This has improved with the starting of the car. 2 or 3 times, the car hasnt started first time. It also helped with the still present misfiring issue?

07-07-2020: New rear right Pagid handbrake cable fitted (old one snapped a couple of days prior).

IMG_3414.JPG

10-07-2020: Ordered a standard replacement backbox for the Clio. Unfortunately, unable to get it to fit properly due to the current mid section on the car. So the plan is to get a full standard 172 exhaust system (backbox, mid section, CAT, manifold). The current exhaust is just too loud for my liking, it drones at 60 & 70mph, i can't cope anymore. Plus with the current set up, it can't pass the emissions test on a MOT. Current exhaust set-up is, 182 manifold, decat pipe (unsure of brand), full straight through mid section & a powerflow back box (this may be for sale if i go along with the current etc).

15-07-2020: Spotted a set of turinis for sale on one of the Facebook clio pages and being spontaneous i decided to purchase them. I picked them up from Cleethorpes at around 10pm-ish on the 15th of July. Car drove there and back with no real issues to be honest. The seller was a decent chap as well (y).

Key details: Same size tyres all round (195 45 16), all the same colour, tyres have around 5-6mm each, no centre caps missing, 2 michelin pilot sport 3 tyres. Pretty sure no cracks, welds or buckles. Will find out once fitted/getting refurbed anyway. Came off a 172 cup so all ET38 (well should be anyway).

16-07-2020: Gave the alloys a clean even though they will be getting professionally refurbed at some point in the near future. Even though they were in quite a sorry state when i picked them up, they cleaned up surprisingly well IMO. Still undecided on what colour but was thinking silver or anthracite maybe?

Main products used:
Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel
Bilt Hamber Surfex HD
Bilt Hamber Auto Wash
Bog standard bucket and yellow sponge

I also attempted to clay bar each wheel (inner and outer faces) (auto finesse clay bar for anyone interested).

I think the full process took me around 2 hours.

Front spacers will most likely getting removed and sold. They are PMS 18mm hub centric iirc. Will replace these with some standard 5mm-10mm spacers, nothing more as i don't want it to rub/have a negative effect on the handling.

Rear stub axle spacer kit/camber shims will need to be removed, one or the other etc. Whatever is removed will most likely be up for sale. This is because i know the tyres will rub with the current 20mm ish spacing on the rear.

Standard alloys will also be for sale.

Since cleaning the turinis, i have got another 2 Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres, they are part worns in good condition (5-6mm each).

  Renault Clio 172 Ph2
Some bits i have forgot to mention. I got insured on the Clio for another year, price was £750 fully comp with 3 years no claims 20 years old.

The turinis & tyres are being safely stored indoors.

I managed to win myself an already painted cup spoiler off eBay. Result.
1595513595990.png

The spoiler arrived on Monday & was fitted by myself yesterday. The spoiler looks great (apparently it was professionally painted). However, it is a slightly darker shade of red compared to my original. I guess this is down to my cars paint being faded because of the sun. At least there isn't any lacquer peel on this one.

Started to spit whilst installing. The spoiler is hitting/catching the roof when opening the boot so i have ordered some smaller/shorter boot struts. I could see marks prior to installing, where this has been happening in the past.

I am really happy with how the spoiler looks. However, the brake light isn't working, so this might be getting took off shortly as ideally i'd want it working. According to the eBay advert the light does work so it might just need the connection cleaning/securing up. Maybe.

Looks smart mate, well done on finding some Turini’s! Struggle is real for me 😔 can’t find any local!

These were over a 2 hour journey for me! But, i know they are worth it. They dont pop up for sale that often & i decided that i may as well snatch them up asap before someone else does! I suppose i do have the room to store them as well which is a benefit.

Almost caught up now...

Got my flocked dash repaired, it had started to lift near the centre.
I think this is down to cleaning product + the sun. I work long hours so the car is parked up in direct sunlight for long periods of time both at home & work.
However, it has been fixed for no charge. He said in order for him to do it properly the dash top is going to need to come out again. However, i m happy with what he has done. Hopefully it lasts anyway (y)

Car is still getting used daily for work etc. Mileage is around 79,200-ish.

I am currently in the process of getting my car looked at again for this misfiring issue it has. There is something still there. Happens when cruising between 70 & 80mph. Also, yesterday it started 2nd time not 1st. This only happened once yesterday and i covered around 100+ miles all together.

However, after doing a bit of my own research, i am thinking that it is the knock sensor, i have just got to wait a week before i can do anything as i am due to go back to a garage.

If i cannot get this issue resolved near where i live/in the next week or so, i will get it sorted when i get the timing belt, dephaser, water pump & aux belt etc etc done. I am thinking about taking the car to Engine Dynamics/AW Motorworks as i have only heard positive things about them on this forum.

Thanks for reading & sorry for not being active enough 😩

UPDATE

Tuesday: I had just finished my shift at work and my drivers side front tyre was flat. So i steadily made my way to the nearest petrol station and pumped it up (Only had 4 PSI in it according to the pump).

IMG_3615.JPG

Drove home, tyre was still solid, must be a slow puncture then? Put the spare on for piece of mind.

IMG_3619.JPG

Well this is broke...

IMG_3616.JPG

Just checked the wheel i took off and it is still solid (full of air)??

Not really fussed about the wheel/tyre situation as i will have my turinis on soon anyway (hopefully).

Thursday Morning: So as previously stated, i have went back to the garage who removed all of the fault codes etc.

These are the codes/problems which have come back:

I have removed the original clocks and replaced them with a second hand set. This is because not all of the lights were working and the just below the SERV light there was some noticeable damage. The replacement clocks appear to be fully working (have not drove the car since).

Furthermore, the Clio is booked in at a local garage, on Monday, to get all of the spacers removed and for a new drivers side outer cv boot.

  Renault Clio 172 Ph2
Turinis back from the powder coaters.

Not the best of finishes due to the amount of corrosion they had but they are better than before and i'm happy-ish with them. Not noticeable unless you are close up. It is only the 2 alloys which originally had bad corrosion, which dont have the best of finishes.

I actually got these fitted on Friday evening but i've been busy with work.

Here are some photos:
