Clio 172 Lift off oversteer issues...

Did a track day yesterday.

My mate took his ph2 172 (stripped out track car) and it was his first session with his new fandango custom made rear shocks. These things look the absolute boll0cks and have 12 settings.

He really really struggled with lift off oversteer all day. It was really really snappy. It was playable to a degree, but all of a sudden out of nowhere it would just bite and send the car grass bound.

Does this mean they were set too hard? Too soft? Is it tyre pressures?

Any help greatly appreciated.
 
Isn't a rough guide that the stiffer the springs, the less grip it has? (very rough guide!)

So if you have a lot of oversteer, soften the rears - or reduce the pressure slightly.

I may be completely wrong, but I think that's what I've picked up from seeing Tony and Jay set up their race car.

Too stiff on the rear. Soften the rear, don't stiffen the front (understeer).

Try it with the adjustable damping 1st, if that doesn't happen change springs.

I may be completely wrong, but I think that's what I've picked up from seeing Tony and Jay set up their race car.

it's more about roll and damping than springs really. Stiffen the rear damping and you'll see more of a tendency to oversteer,

If it was only oversteering when he lifted off than the two areas I would look at are stiffness and tyre pressures.

Lift off oversteer occurs because the rear tyres are becoming unloaded and therefore less force pushing them into the tarmac. If the car is too hard at the rear and too soft at the front than the weight transfer forward could be to much and result in more lift off oversteer. Try stiffening the front or making the rear softer to find the right balance.

It could also be too much rear tyre pressure and the tyres 'ballooning' as they are getting too hot and the pressures are rising and reducing grip. It is hard to explain and say with out driving the car.

Did he try any setup changes during the day?

I agree, this is why i say the arguement that ASTs are too stiff on the front it wrong, they're too soft on the rear if anything (the basic road package at least)

Massive help, thanks mate.

The car was set to its hardest setting for the first run (more of an experiment).

Then when he cleaned his seat off, he softened it 4 clicks and it was marginally better. He was going to try and soften it further but tbh, I think he was just happy acting the goat and drifting all day! lol.
