I’ve never tried the mk8 but probably should. I miss my ST but probably rose tinted glasses. Remember getting home first night, lying in bed and feeling my back tighten up. The ride is that hard. That was a later 2016 one as well.

I’ve been put off the new one mainly because A) it’s a 3 cylinder and B) they are far more expensive than the mk7. They were a no brainier at £16k.

It reality it doesn’t. But you can’t deny it has an impact on some people’s perception (including mine) as a bit of a backwards step. A bit like Americans moaning about a “6 cylinder” which is reality has more power than a V8 they would be happy with. [emoji23]

One thing you can’t deny is the mk8 hasn’t sold in anywhere near the numbers the mk7 did. I wonder how much is down to price and how much is down to the fact that a 3 cylinder performance car is a bit of an odd ball.

I got used to it. As a driver it’s fine. My wife moaned like f**k but then I would blame the car for that. [emoji23]

I sort of get it, but it's just progress really. Unless you want to go for big power, there aren't really any downsides. The three-pot probably sounds better too

I wonder if it's the lease/PCP thing that's had an impact too. I'm not sure the deals have been as good on the MK8 so far.

My wife ran one for 2 years, was a nice car that we both really liked, she still misses it a little today (since then she's had a Cooper S and now a T-Roc R, because of baby naturally..)

My only criticism was the one that always gets bounded about, the ride on it was just bone shakingly hard. I remember being a passenger in it one time when I had a kidney stone and that combo was making me feel physically sick, had to go home after a mile or two!

Hers was an early (14 plate) ST-2 so I know they revised the setup on later cars.

As blasphemous as it sounds, if they'd have offered the 5 door in an auto over here I could see we'd have changed it for one of those.

Wife has back problems and whilst the ride of the ST was fine for her it was the combo of big chunky doors in tight spaces, and the manual box that meant she had to swap for a 5 door auto of some varient (the Cooper S).

But it was a cracking little car, made lovely wooshy noises, and for the money compared to todays stuff it seems a relative bargain.

Aren't there a bunch of 5 door STs driving about? Seen a few myself.

I’ve had a new mk7 and I really want a mk8 but they are so expensive. My mk7 was £14k and was paying £150 pcp. Lucky to get it for £22k and £260 on pcp

Took the 300mi round trip up to Collins Performance in Congleton yesterday to have the car brought up to their full 'CP2-E' specification which now means it's got:
- Milltek cat-back
- ST200 airbox with K&N filter
- Mountune induction hose
- Collins turbo actuator
- Airtec stage 1 intercooler
(and the associated new map)

Their development car for the CP2-E was running an ITG induction set-up which flows better but is much noisier which is why I went the ST200 route. That said, Gary took it out for data logging and at peak it was still flowing 172g of air compared to 178g for the development car. As that car made 240bhp on the rollers that should mean mine is sitting at roughly 234bhp giving it a healthy 215bhp/ton and it certainly feels it.

It's making peak power at about 6300rpm according to the logs which is definitely a lot higher than before too so it's now worth working the engine a bit more instead of short-shifting up to ride the mid-range torque.

Also had a quickshift kit fitted which, along with the fancy new gearknob makes for a really satisfying shift action so the drive home was pretty great (and I even managed 45mpg at the same time).

No immediate plans to do anything else other than drive it, but I do have half an eye on a Bilstein B8 / Mountune Clubsport suspension set-up...

Hasn't had any love in a while, so time for a bit of shopping...

One of the wheels has had a very slow leak for pretty much the entire time I've had it. No puncture in the tyre and they've tried replacing the valve to no avail so current thinking is that it's corrosion between the metal valve stem and the wheel itself.

As that wheel was frustratingly a different colour to the other three (Rado Grey vs Rock Metallic?) I've bitten the bullet and bought a fresh new wheel and a rubber valve stem to hopefully solve it once and for all.

And if it's going to be up on a ramp, thought it would make sense to fit a Milltek sport cat at the same time. Probably no significant performance gains with the current set up but it's a bit more noise and sets me up nicely for the big turbo at some point...

Hmmm, so this is rapidly becoming more expensive than I'd anticipated.

The old cat doesn't want to come off so they're now at the stage of drilling out the studs. That and a lambda sensor has threaded itself on the way out. Brilliant.

Still, hopefully that's now something that won't be a problem when it goes back up to Collins in the next month or two....

Don't think the cat has made any significant difference to the performance, but I wasn't expecting anything as it's really just groundwork for an S270 turbo upgrade. Pleased to note that it's not obnoxiously loud either, in fact not that much louder than the OE cat.

Yeah it's not looking all that great at the minute! Washed it at the weekend and accidentally put far too much shampoo in the bucket. Instead of removing it I just ploughed on and now all my windows have this filmy residue even after f**k loads of WIndolene so it definitely needs a proper going over.

As a lazy, lazy 'detailer' without a machine polisher, is there anything decent that does it all in one step without doing separate polish / clean / wax steps? I've used 'Need for Speed Cleaner Wax' before which was reasonable but I guess things have probably moved on in the last 20 years...

I was in two minds about the turbo upgrade but after having a Golf R that was quick, but just too well sorted with it, I quite like the idea of having something that's just a bit too powerful for its own good that actually requires some throttle control and driving to the conditions more.

Probably this by hand for me. Followed by wax of some kind. Ideally pair it with a bolt hamber wax. I can't rate their products high enough. Deadly combo double speed wax and polish. Find the right hand polishing pad and away you go.

FFS, just called LV to get a quote on changing the turbo. They've been absolutely fine with everything else I've declared (intercooler, exhaust, map, induction kit) but apparently an uprated turbo is a complete no-go.

My policy doesn't run out until October and I'm in no hurry to muck around trying to cancel it and take out a new one with a more understanding insurer so that's everything on pause for the time being.

Frustrating timing as I'd hoped to get it done this spring with a view to using it all summer. Not sure I see the point in adding another 70bhp to a FWD just as winter starts to set in so we're potentially looking at next spring now.

Might pass the time by sticking an ITG intake on. Should free up ~10bhp compared to the current ST200 airbox and is another thing ticked off the list ready for the eventual turbo upgrade.

Decided to replace the old ST200 / OE airbox setup with a proper Revo induction kit and crossover pipe. I would have gone ITG but only just realised I have a pretty well regarded Revo dealer around the corner so popped in this morning and had it all installed.

Can't say I notice any difference in power, but this is only really in preparation for upgrading the turbo. There's a bit of dump valve noise from the outside but it's nowhere near as barry as I'd been worried about.

I feel like I could lean through the screen and brush those leaves off the scuttle.

Get something on the edge of the airbox hole when you can, the MAF wires might not last too long as they are:

I never really understood the logic behind having that removed. Maybe it's because I don't really do any steady state 70mph driving (no motorways in Norfolk...) but I don't really find it particularly droney, even with the sports cat.

That said, I drove home with the windows down yesterday as the weather was great and it appears that the intake is much louder than I'd thought, even on fairly low rpm gear changes.... Best lean into it and get some lime green gel Ford badges.

To my shame I did replace the centre caps a couple of weeks ago.... living up to my avatar.

In fairness they were all cracked and peeling so I just replaced them with a black set of ST200 caps.
