Cup vs BMW 330. What u think

i have raced my mates 328i many a times and before stage one mods, he couldnt "catch" me til around the 80mph mark when he would SHOOT past me, after stage one he would shoot past at no less than 110mph. This is a fact as we did it loads of times on the bypass, different starts etc.

Yep, I know Im dissapointed in the low down power of the 172/cup, and Im sure there are many cars out there that could overtake a 172/cup if caught below prime rpm.

The first ever race i had was against a 330 and i was up his (probably automatic) arse big time pushing him along. My brother who was in his BRM was watching behind and couldnt keep up. This was during my test drive day in my car before i actually bought it! oops. Had to be done. I do believe my 172 is a quick example as i managed to toast my friends pulsar when his was standard (me 3 up, him 2 up) up a hill around 120 mph. When he got a "zorst" and filter he could toast me but our top speeds were identical, if anything i could gain ever so slightly at around 142 ish.

I also raced an S3 and was reeling his 02 numberplated ass in all the way - (organised race btw)

Also (when chipped) i was pushing along a "zorsted" Escort Cosworth down the hogsback and squeezed past him at 125 in 4th gear at around 7500 rpm shouting "have some of that!!!!" at the Boyracers Wet Dream Feature car.

Also managed to match a 3 door Sierra Cosworth off the lights, if anything, pull ahead slightly.

Stayed pretty level with a zorsted Skyline GTS 2.5 tiptronic (new shape with 2-tone paint, he hangs around Guildford loads)

Id have to think twice about a 330 tho, especially if it was manual and in the correct hands. But if they only have 231 bhp then, as they weigh loads probably, their power/weight isnt going to be anything special.

p.s. i do punish my car to its maximum- all the time. In that ive had a new gearbox and the new one is on the way out - cars done 22,586 miles..... also had 2 new exhausts..........

People can go on all they want about 330 bmw beating clio 172 or the cup but i can tell you fact that there is little difference which would sell me the BMW over the cup or 172 - If you have the cash its a status thing for most people - The difference is not great as ive raced a couple of 330 upto 120 and if you think the 330 "whops" a 172 you really dont know what your talking about - forget stats - go race and find out for yourself - many factors contribute the performance from human to gearbox etc. I personally think the 172 is a Fab car to drive and I get a laugh every time a tossy BMW driver gets the hump when he cant lose my 172. Also I do have the cash and woul dnever buy a 330 they are tossy status symbols - The M3 is a far better car and so is the Scooby and 911.

the 330 is not a drivers car mearly a sales persons car which is a tourer and the snobs who have no real idea of "drivers" cars will buy a bmw cause of status - the 172 is a superb car which puts a smile on my face every time - the only bmw to do that is the M3.

I work in Wickford but only usually use the cup one day a week for work. If you see me bring it on ill piss all over ya :D

Simon172, from your deluded post u sound very much like a boy racer - let me guess ur early 20s. Looks like youll chase anything in a skirt .

Do the honest thing & hand in your car keys before you kill someone.

Gamesmaster their is nothing wrong with BWM drivers - I would not call a beemer a status symbol. As Ive said before most owners of 330s are a little older than yourself & after 80 mph they engage their brain & slow down.

The 330 is fine round the track it may have got a bit softer & the steering slightly numb but not a bad car.

Jase 1 - some of your above post is correct. Although i think your post is a bit personal "looks like youll chase anything in a skirt." ? (where did that come from?- do i know you? who are you to say that? how would you know anyway?) Now if you are refering to cars that maybe be clad in a skirt-type bodykit then you would be correct, but i fear you are not referring to that.

By all means make comments about my posts content but dont assume personal things about people that youve never met.

Also - how do you know the age of Gamesmaster? and me for that matter?

I think 80% of people in here can be classed as a "boy-racer" as we own/drive fast cars and race people etc.

I do admit i drove fast then and have since slowed my driving down now as the novelty is wearing off.

Although i will always be "up for" a toast off the lights or a dual carriageway drag, but not up to silly speeds as in the past.

Back to the 330i they are nice looking cars tho arent they? but if id be buying a BMW of that price range/performance id save up some more for an M3. Its more of an M3 wannabe and isnt.

Paddy and Wongy - didnt you read the start of this post - my Dad has a 330 Ci and yes my Cup does beat it - not by much to 60 about a car length and then there level with the Beemer pulling away slowly (155 top speed)! Oh but I must be making this up.................of course!

Yeah im not sure why people get a 330 with the bodykit and all the extras when a M3 isnt a whole lot more. Maybe you just cant get them as company cars? Or insurance is a big jump??

Simon, i wouldnt worry about this jase geezer, i met him in another thread where he was having a go at some other guys, he went OTT on everything! He didnt quite understand that a race essentially consists of a straight drag on the motorway or an a road, which isnt dangerous. Some people to like to get a bit personal on these forums, but hey, f**k em lol

BTW all this 172/CUP business ?? They arent the same - theres enough reviews, road tests and aerticles around now to prove that - go read them. Different motors just like the 16V/Williams! Its Like comparing a valver to a willy - yes there are similarites, but the buck stops there. Cups 0-62 is 6.5 (EVO mag this month) Ive done 6.4 but whats a tenth of a second? And Thats 0-62! therefore 0-60 is even quicker - yes? and 0-100 takes 16.7 (my car, not sure about others!) Unless uve properly driven a run in Cup there aint much point commenting! Performance figures are different and the BHP/Tonne 181BHP/Tonne against 155BHP/Tonne kinda says it all at the end of the day! Im talking standard figures here - sure if you modify ull go quicker (according to PGTi this is looking like a myth though in some cases - who has the 129BHP 172?????) Ideally Id like a Mk1 172, Wiliams 1, R5 GTT, V6 Mk1/2 and a 5 Turbo 2 - but we cant have everything - Im sure Im getting 2 of those for Christmas .............

In model form of course..................?

Theyre not that dissimilar mr cupsize! A 129bhp is a piss take! Id take the car back. I guess the cups have a more reliable output as the engines bench tested?

  mk2 172

yeah mate, if the engines do make the same power a cup is faster, its physics!, when i had a passneger in my williams against a 172 i couldnt get away no where near as much as i could without, says it all really!

If we all adopt this loose weight, more speed thing - wed certainly learn alot - we should organise a test with Mk1/2 172/ Valver/Williams/1200 16V/1400 16V/ 1600 16V/ 1800 8V etc cars and use them as dummys - strip out the interior minus the drivers seat and see what times we get - obviously will be quicker - then add more power (somehow?) I know it worked a treat in the 1600 16V - but then u can spoil it by added massive wheels and heavy bodykits! Its a compromise really.....aint it!

I think this was answered by 2fast4u and the like in another thread a while back, ie same reason why people want to put a Sport badge or side skirts on their Clios. I have no problems with body kits etc, but I dont think the same when people badge a car up to what its not, eg, put M3 badges on a 330ci...

Well theres an easy answer for that. To make the car look better than it is.

Still doesnt really answer the question though mate cos the confusion was that with all these add ons theyre quite close on price so why dont they get M3s in the first place?

Give me an M3 any day of the week.

Infact if money was no object and I could only have one car to do everything, I would buy either a new M3CSL or a Porsche 996 Carrera 4S, Dont care if its cool or uncool..

Both

Give me an M3 any day of the week.

In fact if money was no object the one car I would have would be the new M3CSL or a Porsche 996 Carrera 4S (need to test drive both to decide..yeah in my dreams!!).

Both have 4 seats, big boot, as fast as youll ever want it and will likely last almost a life time.

in your dreams, and your thinking of practicality!! CSL is a 2 seater as far as i know. I think i could cope with a pagani zonda s!

I think the CSL is stripped out version of the M3 with new induction and tweaks to engine, suspension and exhaust.

Zondas, Maclaren F1, Ferrari Enzo, lamborghinis etc are all great cars but not really drivable on Britains roads. You couldnt go to Tescos in one, theyre too wide for the barriers! youll never have enough luggage space for the other half for a dirty weekend and youll have to get a new exhaust every time you go over a speed bump and where do the kids go?

Remember, Im talking about one car youll ever have.

i know mate, thats why i said a real 172, wonder what your 0-100 is now then?, can only be better really as like a fine wine it will get better with age til 15k, we ought to have another group test in the new year:D

  S2000

Wait a minute, wait a minute!!!!

I was reading this post laughing at everyone thinking their 172/Cup will stay with a a 330i (Not happening btw, LIMITED TO 155!!!!)! When what happens, a complete bullsh*t post appears!!!

Cupsize you are deluding yourself mate! How long has that one been simmering under your skin. The cup and the 172 are so near as dammit matched for speed its barely noticable!!! I could quote you 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile times that are only 0.2,0.4, 0.1 of a diffrerence!

MK2 172 - 0-60 - 6.6, 0-100 - 17.3, 1/4 - 14.9

And the power to weight figures are all wrong. Its funny you qoute from EVO then obviously from autocar! Autocar are still under the impression the Cup is 979KG, when infact it is 1011, getting the p/w/r down to 171 bhp per tonne!! the difference in power to weight ratio(about 14BHP), may make a slight difference off the line but once up and running, with speeds exceeding 80, their would be no difference. Flipping heck, have a couple of mates in the car and youd have a worse p/w/r than a standard 172!

Merry Christmas BTW!:)

The Cup is to the 172 what the CSL is to the M3; the Williams to the Clio 16v. These editions are what would probably be criticised as too harsh or uncompromising if they were the only model on offer - but theres always a limited, but keen, market for a more raw/perfected model.
