The car already has braided brake hoses so I shall do a full flush. Got Alex to order some new seals and nipples for the calipers and I will start to make a move on cleaning them up this week so they are all fresh, ready for fitment.

Thanks again George :)

Got few jobs done recently, mainly my brake caliper refresh. I'm over the moon on how they've turned out, especially from how they was before! It has taken me a good few hours work on them but as you can see the end result has paid off :)

Apart from the rear caliper carriers that are not in the picture, this is how my spare set started. As you can see I had a bit of work that needed doing to clean them up before painting them.

I left them in a bucket of acetone one by one to soak to loosen off the old paint which was very thick :(

Once the paint was loose I taped up the important parts and put them in the sandblasting machine at work one by one to remove the remaining paint and prep it for painting

Once all sandblasted I painted them with Hammerite smooth silver spray, left to dry overnight, then gave them another coat and left them to dry overnight again.

I sandblasted all the bolts and brackets and gave them a quick paint. I didn't bother painting the threads as they didn't need to be done.

Just waiting on the seals to arrive then me and Alex will get them all fitted with the new discs and pads and do a full fluid change. I also gave the disc face a going over to prevent future rust. I will eventually do the rims of the discs but at a later date.

Once the brakes were done I moved onto the other jobs. One of the things I wanted to do on my BG182 was to remove the bonnet sound deadening but upon looking, it turned out that the underside of the bonnet wasn't fully painted so I left it on. I had a look on the Ph1 and to my delight it was fully painted underneath so off came the sound deadening for a nice clean look :)

Another job I've been wanting to do for a while was to clean up the manky bonnet catch. While I was removing that I decided to clean up the underneath of the catch on the bonnet and to also clean the throttle cable holder too. I'm not actually sure that's the real title for it though

The catch was pretty grubby so I sandblasted both the catch and throttle cable holder and gave them a spray of some silver paint and some lacquer.

While in spraying mode I gave the engine bay bulkhead a lick of black paint to get rid of the horrible brown look.

I next altered my camber as it was currently set at max on the BC's so I'm now at a normal angle! I gave the seat runners a lube up too as they were a little stiff and added some copper slip grease on the rear wiper arm as I never had any when I fitted it. With all that done I took a quick pic in the sun

Hopefully I'll be fitting the new brakes this week then it needs a bloody good clean!

Thanks Barry!

I actually used some meguires tyre gel as I had some kicking around as the strips were pretty dark anyway. I'd be looking at getting some G4 Techniq as that stuff does wonders. £25 for a little bottle but it goes far and is very good stuff that's lasts ages. Once CSS is getting closer I'll be buying some cleaning products as I'm running low and C4 will be on the list.

Nothing secret .. Snetterton on Weds and Cadwell on Thurs dude :)

Ah ok mate :race:

Nice one mark see you there matey :)

Will do buddy :)

Sandblasting machines are awesome.
Looks proper cracking mate!

They really are mate. The one at work has seen better days tbf but is still going strong and it still does the job. I can see it being used on a few more ph1 parts ;)

Yeah they are great I use to use them to strip aircraft of paint back in a previous life.
looking good Mark :)

Thanks Matt :) Sorry i didn't make today at North Weald, i was still tinkering with the clio this morning. You coming to Saturdays meet?
Looking good dude.

Inlet etc needs painting now!

Cheers mate :) Yeah that is on the list to do. I'm going to do the inlet, fuel rail guard and cam cover all silver with the "Renault Sport" being either polished or brushed finish. Im even thinking of removing the engine mount and doing it in the same colour

Jesus just read abit more and this is up there with the best ph1 imo

I love the attention to detail and keeping it oem

Thank you very much for the compliment mate  Its far from the best. Bodywork needs attention with chips, scratches and dents. it actually has a load of car park dents which i will get removed by rafmatt1984 brother @County Dents like i did on my BG.

My plan is too keep it OEM+ and generally keep on top of the car really. Over time i'd like to get it in mint condition but i'm in no hurry as it'll take a lot of time and money, of which i have more of the former than the latter! Lol

  Many.
Do the cambelt cover when painting stuff, along with the top alternator bracket, and support bar.

Can check timing at the same time.

  Did have a R27
Southend meet ? Yeah hopefully will pop down for a bit of Arcade Machine fun.
Give my bro a call when you need him to do your dents dude.

Sounds like a done deal to me! We'll remove the parts at work one weekend on a Saturday to paint and leave it all overnight to fully dry and we'll refit them the next day after we've checked the timing. That wont be a for at least a few weeks yet though mate!

Hopefully the seals will be here Tuesday/Wednesday and we can stay after work and get them all fitted? If you dont mind popping to my work?

Calipers look great, as does the car overall :)

Just changed my pads over for Brembo OEM on the fronts and I'm happy with them straight away stopping wise.

Thanks Guy :) Thats what i wanted to hear as i dont really drive my car that hard. My head was telling me to go with Brembo over Mintex OEM pads.

Great progress Mark.

You going to FCS ?

Thanks Chris.

Not going FCS this year. Tbh the bearings are gone in the brakes and it sounds horrible above 30mph so i dont really want to be doing long distant driving untill the new brakes are fitted. I dont even know when it is

He'll probs pussy out like every other event recently :p lol

I'm going.

F*ck you!! X

Im actually attending the meet this Saturday :rasp:

dmallett Well when the upper inlet is off I will use the abrasive polishing wheel at work to give the lettering a bit off a buff before I spray it all. That way I can decide whether to leave it all like that or use some wet & dry on the lettering to remove the paint to break it up a little.

@Phase1sr I'm probably not making the camping trip due to everything else I got going on around that time but I will be going CSS. Ordered the tickets last week :)

Oh btw I got your text but the pic wouldn't come through but you have given me an idea. I have 8x brand new bolts in standard thread length with a 19mm head that wouldn't fit due to my 20mm front spacers. I ordered some 22mm thread length ones but accidentally ordered ones with 17mm heads  Once I go back to work I will turn the standard thread length bolts down to 22mm so I have 19mm heads all round, 22m thread on the fronts and 26mm thread on the rears!

Nice work Mark. This car has come a long way. Your attention to detail is something else. I can't make the Southend meet this weekend. But I'll do my best to make the next one. Or a long awaited Dungeness run is in order.

Not good really is it :( Im going to order some standard wheel bolts and just lathe them down as ive only got 17mm heads at home. Take note, kids!

Just got in, 7hours work on this car tonight! Oh Clios...

What an adventure fitting these brakes were. I didnt take any pics but 4 finished ones as we wanted to just crack on.

I finished work around 5pm and got the car ready for when @AlexW turned up. Wheels off, caliper and pads off, discs off etc. Alex pulled up about 6 and had a little chat, etc then started to crack on. He bought new seals for the calipers and new stainless steel nipples. All the calipers were ready for him to start putting new seals in and i decided to start sandblasting some some parts he bought with him for @ventura car. There was quite a bit to do so i turned into DR BLAST!! (It was a joke because Rob/Ventura said that because ive been blasting a lot recently i should change my name to Dr Blast and i kept doing this stupid superhero voice introduction to Dr Blast which Alex was getting annoyed with, so naturally i kept doing t all night!)

After an hour or so my missus bought us down a healthy dinner (McDonald's ;)) as it was going to be a late night. Saying that, Alex had no lettuce in he's so mine was healthier :rasp:

With that done we carried on. Pistons were removed on by one and cleaned up before going into the new refreshed calipers. The discs only came with 2 retaining screws so Dr Blast sandblasted to of the originals. We used some CeraTec (like copper grease but better apparently) on the screws. disc/wheel meeting points, backs of new pads and any other relevant parts. Then the fronts were done.

Moving onto the rears and the pistons were removed, ready for cleaning. At this point one of the nipples decided not to play ball and snap! We noticed that the slider rubbers had perished which would eventually leave then rusting and seizing up so we decided to use one of the calipers that was on the car as the sliders were better anyway. So we taped up all relevant parts and Dr Blast got to work, sandblasting the caliper. Tbf it was in good condition so didnt take too long.

Once sandblasted it seemed silly not to paint it silver, however we couldnt find any silver spray at work. So we closed the doors and shot home to pick up some silver spray that i had. Got back to work only to realise that we'd been locked out!! I had twisted the front door lock so it locked when the door was closed  Searching for any ideas, we walked around the factory and like a golden light, we noticed the customers toilet window was slightly open! (Someone probably had a major poo earlier on and needed to let some fresh air in!) So i jumped and squeezed though the window and hey presto we was back in! We must off looked like a right pair of gypo's breaking in!

So back in play and with the caliper being sprayed, the other one was fitted with a new seal and the piston cleaned up. All done we went for fit the new/old one and noticed that the nipple was the wrong size. Turns out that the calipers have been replaced at some point in its life and could be OE spec but not genuine? Anyway Dr Blast sandblasted the original nipple and it was all fitted up with new dics, pads and CeraTec. At this point it was late o'clock!

We then bled the car with the ATE super blue fluid. There was some air in the system which was to be expected. With the brakes bled Alex took if for a quick spin while i started to clear up. He came back and wasnt happy as he thought there was still air in the system but that was enough for one night as it was now 12:45am! So we cleared up and went home. Alex came back last night to help rebleed the brakes aswell as have some other stuff blasted/painted. We rebled the brakes and both took it out but we're still not 100% convinced, however we did notice an knocking noise. After a little investigation it turned out that the front pads never came with any shims and the noise is the pad moving so we shall order a set and get that fitted with on more bleed but that will be one day next week.

So i now have all new refurbed calipers with new seals and nipples (well 3), all pistons cleaned up, new discs and pads fitted all round, new hub nuts and full fluid change witha lick of silver paint for the fresh new OEM look :)
