Dr Jekyll's Ph1 172 Progress Thread

  Many.
What a fun couple of evenings. I'm not built for this late night shiz though.

Few points, It was only you that looked like a gyppo breaking in, I was just stood there laughing.
And I noticed the shims missing when I was unpacking everything, but had to soilder on. With the old calipers full of s**t etc, it wouldn't have been an issue, but with everything lovely, clean and new, theres a lot of movement of the pad, thus causing a knock when you first brake after reversing (so pad is moving one way, then the other knocking both ways). Thats more for other people, than you Mark, obviously

BTW, Ordered shims this morning. See you later homeslice.

Not much has happened lately apart from a slight creak when moving the steering wheel. The noise is coming from lower down so I've ordered new ball joints and Alex has some inner track rod ends so these will fitted when they arrive. Luckily I bike to work now so the car being used can be optional.

I've also ordered off a member a Ph1 gear knob that I'm refurbing as mine is scratched. I have the wrong paypal address though so I'm waiting on a reply with the new one and then i'll fire over the funds.

After wanting one for some time now I've finally ordered a new Renault sport Sabelt steering wheel from Renault Wolverhampton and a Momo boss from Larkspeed. Once they arrive I will get them fitted and get Alex to remove the airbag light with he's wizardry :D

And lastly my newly refurbed brakes have stated to discolour already :( I'm gutted tbh as a lot of hours went into them. The pads also move slightly where they came without shims. I've have brand new ones but yet to fit them because...... I've ordered a set of Hi-Spec calipers :D I've opted for the better finish (polished and anodised) calipers in silver for the OEM look with mounting brackets and road pads. No need for braided lines as I've already got them. I've sprayed a spare set of rear carriers with a few coat of different silver spray to before and added a few coats of lacquer and will fit these when the Hi-Spec's get fitted along with a bleed with my ATE super blue fluid

@Timmsy Yes they do 2 types. 280mm to fit standard brakes and under 15" wheels and 300mm for 16" wheels. I shouldn't have a problem as I've got 20mm spacers.

@dmallett I said Alex has first dibs if he wanted them but if he doesn't them yes you can have second dibs. They have all been sandblasted, new seals and nipples fitted, outer piston cases has been polished before refitting and I have brand new and unused shims for the front pads which are included (Brembo OE) and have only done 200 miles. All they need is a better paint job :)

Sabelt is a great mod I fitted one to my ph1 flamer and loved it, they do wear quickly though.

Ok mate, I'll keep that in mind. I'm sure @AlexW will see this soon to clarify wether he wants them or not.

Yeah I got the Hi-Spec's through work at a discounted price as my boss knows them quite well. There is a 2-4 week wait though due to them being made to order. My work pays for them, then claims the vat back and takes the remainder out of my wages over a couple of weeks (I get paid weekly) meaning I pay less tax on my wages :)

Haha, my uncle works at my local Halfords so I got 25% discount off a new bike. I didn't want a big spec bike as I did that before on my last one:

My Dr Jekyll by Dr-Jekyll, on Flickr

That had a big spec but this is purely a to and from work bike with the odd weekend ride. Can't see the calf muscles getting that big tbh ;)

Can't wait to see the Hi-Specs mate, they also do a 6 pot.

Not sure when they'll arrive Scott but hopefully not too long. These are the calipers. I like the look of the black ones but thought I'd keep it OEM with the silver ones:

Trust you looking at the 6pots ;)

Ive wanted one for a while mate, and it'll tie in nicely with the iceberg. Yeah I know they go manky but when it does I'll be getting it retrimmed in perforated leather with the blue in alcantara :)

My girlfriend had been promising to get one of these since the Surrey rolling road day in feb as she knew how much i wanted one and liked them. A few months past then this week we ordered the bits. Phone Larkspeed and ordered a Momo boss and spoke to Adam @ Renault Wolverhampton and ordered a Renault sport Sabelt wheel. Great service from both on both parts arriving promptly.
@Timmsy She kept to her word ;)

The ph1 wheel looks massive in comparison in this pic. It is bigger but here its only due to the Sabelt being flat and the ph1 wheel at an angle.

And then gave it a quick wash

I was back in the morning with @AlexW as he gave me a hand fitting some lower ball joints as mine were making a noise. After realising that we couldn't get the ball joint splinter in (the one at work is bigger) and knowing that there was a tad bit of play in the inner track rod, we decided to remove the hub for ease and buy new inner and out track rod ends.

We shot down our local GSF car parts and picked up a pair of inner and outer track rod ends and shot to halfords to get a viscous fan spanner to do the job. Not sure what was more of a ball ache, getting tongue tied trying to say viscous fan spanner or using it on the inner track rods!

Gave the rubber a clean up before putting the new inner on

Got the inner and outer track rod ends fitted and then removed the lower ball joint from the hub and got the new one fitted and fitted it all back up

At this point the ice cream man turned up and as my boss was there working on the buggy he's just bought, he bought us all ice cream

We took a little break and i took a few pics which might interest @DaveDreads

Once we scoffed the '99 we went onto the drivers side and repeated the process, which came off a lot quicker than the passenger side :) Fitted the new inner and outer track rod ends along with the new lower ball joint and put it all back together. On the passenger side, the driveshaft thread was a little knackered and we had trouble putting the hub nut on, but the drivers side went on with ease. Alex said he had some spare at home and that we'd come back later on to refit a new one on. With that we drove the car on the ramps and sorted out the tracking.

14470748331_d6b3a26d56_z.jpg

We then went home and came back later in the evening to refit the new driveshaft nut and Alex also bought round he's laptop in which he kindly turned off my airbag light, due to the Sabelt. We then went to put the new nut on and it still wouldn't have it so we took the hub all back off so we could thread file the end. Luckily because it had been replaced earlier, it came off a piece of p*ss. After many attempts and filing and still with no luck we just though f*ck it and we took a disc cutter to the shaft and cut off 2mm off the end. After that the nut fitted a treat so we put it all back together!

With that we said our goodbyes and we drove home. On the way home i noticed the wheel sits slightly lower on the right hand side so we'll readjust the tracking one evening after work this week. Shouldn't take long.

Big thanks to Alex for the help today and running around with me and Emily for my Sabelt wheel :)

Cool story bro!! ;-)

Seriously though, I'm glad you've got your wheel :) what's it like compared to the original? Not sure I could go back to an original now but I think mine might be a tad small

It feels much nicer to drive. I didn't have a problem with the original but it would seem massive now! I do think this size (330mm) is perfect. Anything less is too small for daily driving, but i guess its personal preference. When i felt yours i did think it was too small.

Shed tbh.

Meh, whatever Monica! ;)

My car looks the nuts!! lol

It does mate. Alex took me out in it, goes nice too.

Just gets better and better.

Thanks Jamie. Im trying to get it mechanically sound above anything else but with a few treats on the way :)

+1

So jealous of your work place.

Come down sometime, always welcome.

THIS! :approve:

Thank you :) It wont be long before you get one. You always comment in ph1 threads!

Good to see you finally have your sabelt mark :)

Shes a good girl

She is mate :) Im chuffed! Not looking forward to it going manky, but when it does i'll be getting a snappy retrim so it'll last :)

I know mate

For the price of them and dat front end, they are tempting.

I just prefer the 182 rear end and interior.

They are nice and you grow to like the interior. That was the only thing i didnt really like but i now love the retro-ness and basic-ness of it.

You'll always sell it on if you dont gel with it but that flame red one looks too good to miss ;)

Fortunately I don't use it as a daily anymore, got the missus civic for that ;-)
Although your right it would bug the s**t out of me on a daily! Long story but were planning on possibly selling the civic so if we do then a bigger wheel will be needed I think, that said the missus doesn't complain when she drives it :D

Not much to update.

Loving the Sabelt wheel. Feels lovely to drive with and I much prefer the smaller size over the original. The original had been retrimmed so it did feel chunky but was too big where as this feels perfect. The original has now been sold which the funds from that will pay towards the retrim on the Sabelt when I eventually get it done.

A member off here was selling some bonnet rubbers and as mine was f*cked I bought one. Came today and fitted it. Much better.

My Hi-Spec's have been made so I'm awaiting for my boss to pick them up as he lives local to them. Will get pics once they arrive.

Im also thinking of welding a bit of box section to the jacking points to strengthen them up and thinking of lowering the front a tad. I need to adjust the tracking some more anyway so 2 birds and all that.

Oh and this came through the post:

Nice and subtle.

@alexr19 I asked admin very nicely but I do believe they will be available to buy from the shop soon.

@AlexW I may just lower the front a tad or raise the rear up slightly. Sometimes I look at it and think there's a little too much arch gap on the front and other times I think it looks ok. I "might" do one full turn.

I must add that now the ball joints and TRE's are done it feels nice to drive and turn with the BC's and new steering wheel. It feels like your more engaged and fighting with the drive (in a good way) and it feels much better.

  Many.
Be easy enough to do when fitting brakes.

Good, I told you it'd feel much better. Gives you that bit more confidence. You don't know fighting until you try to drive Robs car fast!
