F**king exhaust....

  a black one
3 times I've had the thing off now and it's still f**king blowing..

1st, I replaced the manifold to cat kit. It seemed to be worse.

So...

2nd, I swapped the kit bolts and springs back for the old ones, keeping the new gasket. sealed the cat to exhaust joint with high temperature silicon (loctite 5920). The results were better than ever but still a slight blow.

So....

3rd, I got the car on jack stands again..
Removed the cat to manifold gasket and sealed with the silicon. The results: blowing more..

I've checked the entire exhaust and there is no cracks/splits...

The damn thing is impossible. Fred, might need you on this!

Try getting one of those two piece clamps for the rear cat join (they're on Ebay UK.) Makes it a lot easier to seal it properly.

Have you checked the front heat shields to see if they're touching the headers under load? That was a noise source on mine at high revs (a bit of heat shield bending fixed it.)

Apart from that I just used some copper silicone like the loctite stuff and it fixed mine. I didn't have problems with the front cat join though.

If you have knackered engine mounts, it will cause too much movement and the exhaust will break all of its seals.

Thought of that?

Yeah thought about that but all the engine mounts seem to be fine. Gear change is smooth and there seems to be no play in wengine movement. Guess it could be the problem..

I've just had her up on stands again and had a good look round. Everywhere appears to be well sealed.

Maybe it's all in my head!!!

What is the cat kit like compared to your old one, i changed mine today(early ph1) and noticed the new kit from ktec was about 1cm shorter than the origional that came off, meant it sealed up a hell of a lot easier. I'm assuming there was a revised kit introduced at some point.

The bolts were shorter as you described and the springs didn't look as good a quality. I tried them first and then reverted back to the old bolts and springs which gave better results.

That's the one I was trying to remove tonight. Pain in the arse. I'll probably use the same one again though.

Oh and I'm sure I've heard somewhere that putting silicon before the CAT isn't a good idea? Might be wrong though. Mine blows from the mani join also. Best way to notice is on a cold morning, when the engine is hot, rev it while looking at the joins. Good to know the old springs worked better though. I'll keep hold of them for when I reattach my modded CAT, or decat depending on which I decide to use :)

Yeah I have heard this too about the silicon between the mani and cat but I think it's been done a few times. Not sure the silicon can take the heat from the mani to be honest. Will know more on Saturday as I've got my MOT... Fingers crossed on the exhaust emissions test!

which cat fitting kit did you use? k-tec? It's wierd how there is a gasket of sorts, when standard one doesn't have one, and there seem to be miles more bits than what came off the car :S

I had a similer problem with mine. I found the main blowing coming from the manifold/cat join. Used metal poxy heat resistant and its been fine ever since.

Still, it took me a good few months to spot where it was coming from which was the annoying thing.

I got the kit from a local parts place (leamoco), however the bits should be the same as from K-tec.
Should come with -
2 x bolts
2 x cups
2 x fibre washers
2 x metal washers
2 x springs
2 x caps
2 x nuts
mesh gasket
which is exactly what should come off the car.
Mine came with the clamp that holds the Cat to middle section too, don't think this comes with the K-tec kit.

Ah right. Yeah sounds about the same bit wise. what you pay for it?

£5.95! Like I said the springs were quite as good a quality as the originals but everything else was good
