Let's face it, there's probably not that much in it to 100 between a 172 and a Fiesta ST.

All the clique trolling has it's cycles in CS. Always has and people always bite, although I agree it makes the forum a slightly more bitter place to frequent and has been the reason I've stopped browsing a couple of times. It eventually causes too much impact/hassle to the forum admin and users will get banned and say sorry then it will happen a few years later with different people.

Well said. The st would be a car length or two at most up to 100, f**k all. Like someone has already stated though, who actually cares. Enjoy them for what they are, both cracking bits of kit.

TIFF and Plato are both closely matched, ( well I personally think tiff is one of the best drivers out there! He does it all good messing about with a smile lol)
If you drive a car to its limit well, against someone who only does half the job it's not a reliable auto car test :)
You never know who has done what to there car and if it's working well or mapped well?
If car "a" boots it half a second before car "b"? Your then left playing catch up. With most cars driven to the limit, to gain that time could be hard. 1/2 second gear change to a 1 second gear change etc etc

I must say the Clio is maxed out, you can't really tell what the type r is doing. So it's prob unfair.
I can't say I agree with the street racing as it looks close to something nasty happening. But they do a good comparison in most .

You are missing the fact it's exactly that, which makes CS what it is. Diversity.

We all like to think our cars are the best. I have my own opinions on different models.
I like to think my Clio is prob going to be my fastest car, but give it 10 years and 300-400bhp will be normal! Lol

I want a golf r next, quality, comfort , some speed and a lazy dsg box . Heaven!

I could never forget the little French hot hatch fun! 106 gti, 205gti, 309gti, Ax gt, R5 turbo, Clio 16v, 172 cup. Saxo vts/vtr!

The RS clio is a fast cheap fun car with low running,insurance etc costs, I'm very proud to own one. There are much faster more expensive cars out there. But value for money, come on, RS Clio every time . And in a few years prices for 172 and 182 will be top dollar, wait and see.

Agree totally, its good to hear that other cars are good, Im happy to join in such discussions myself for that matter, but its very boring seeing people going on about how rubbish clios are, especially when its simply not true, the "sport" range of clios (all of them even before it was called that from 1.8 16v to 200t) are all genuinely good cars, I have driven such a massive variety of cars including ferraris, massive power cosworths, all sorts of jap stuff, kit cars, endless different just "normal" cars etc, so its not like im some kid who has only ever had a clio and cant see anything else and my honest and objective opinion is that they are one of the best all round cars for the fairly unique blend of comfort/practicality/fun/economy/reliability/consumable costs etc that they give for use as a nippy little town car and as a trackday car even including long distance driving to circuits like the ring and spa etc.

(i know thats modified of course, but just showing it can be done without too much in the way of mods, was only an rs2 and 197 cams so not exactly a big build, although I did a few reliability mods too like ARPs and supertech valves etc)

Nearly went back to an MX5 recently as I wanted something RWD again but the Clios compromise on everything is hard to beat if you're only having 1 car so I bought some Recaros instead.

No a 6 speed box shouldnt really effect economy, if anything it would make it better.

The ph1 is a bit better for top end speed than the ph2 as its slightly taller geared, but ultimately at high speeds its just down to the fact that the civic has more horsepower to move the air out of the way with than the 172 does, at lower speeds this power difference is cancelled out by a weight advantage in the clios favour but top speed is mainly about power versus aerodynamics, so without more power so it can match the civic on that front the clio cant compete.

Yep, there is nothing that a clio sport really does badly essentially. (other than be a tow car or go off road or really niche stuff like that, lol)

If you want to love a car for one thing that it can do like 70mpg in an aygo, or 200mph in a ferrari or 1.5G cornering in a westfield thats cool and they will all beat the clio by a couple of metrics, but what I love the clios most for is the lack of things that they cant do, just such epic all rounders!

Agreed, very few hot hatches can match the economy until you get upto the modern turbo ones like the new clio and the latest ST etc.

Astra GTE is about the only petrol hot hatch I can think of prior to the 172 that could match its economy and straight line pace, but it sure as hell couldnt match its handling, lol.

Their sixth gear isnt really any revvier than a 182 5th gear IIRC although I dont have the figures to hand.

Its partly down to the cams (we noticed a slight drop in economy with 197 cams in the 172) and partly down to the weight I think.

Also I think because they feel a bit heavier and modern and comfier etc, you perhaps accelerate a little harder in normal driving without really noticing you are doing it perhaps, ie the driver might act slightly different too even unintentionally.

That's one thing I did notice about the 197 I had a go in. It didn't really have the 'speed thrill' my 172 had. It was doing the same speed but as it was a bigger car, it didn't feel it.

Think that's what makes the 172/182's even more fun.

I guess Renault really did stretch every last ounce out of the F4R to hit 197ps so economy would suffer. Bit like the Corsa VXR's.

As great as the GTE was for straight line speed, I completely agree the Escort murdered it in the bends.

Even some of these modern turbo petrols aren't achieving the figures quoted. My mate has a MK3 Focus ST and it does 31mpg combined.

They are marmite you either love them or hate them, IMO best all round hot hatch good daily. Get a washing machine in the back and well looked after easily get 150k out of them.

I genuinely cant see why anyone would hate them TBH, they arent over the top styled and chavvy looking (well other than the 182 exhaust) and they drive like a totally timid shopping car when required etc, they just dont do anything badly enough for there to be a reason to hate them surely?

I genuinely loved my 182, and loved driving it, (even loved the chavvy exhaust) I agree completely it's a car you could enjoy thrashing it or just gently driving it to the shops, the 182s came well specced for the age.
If I could afford one as a 2nd car to track I'd have one.
Sadly mine was well passed it's best, as it was a high miler that had not been looked after as well as I thought.
In terms of 2nd hand cars it's hard to get a better all rounder for the money.

I have the new st mp215 and it's a belter of a car. Handling is so sharp and my mpg is reading 44 which is great considering the crappy slow commute I do. But I absolutely love getting in my 182, it just feels so special. Maybe because it's fast approaching ten years old, but in those ten years it's always put a smile on my face. Can't see me ever selling it where as I will probably swap the fiesta in a couple of years.

Simply because they are French. A lot of people won't touch a French car because 'they are hassle'. Some people don't like how small they are but I must say I loved my 172. It was great when I wanted fun and it was comfortable to sit in on the motorway when needed.

I've got an E90 320d now which is a good car. It's spacious, it handles likes it's on rails for a saloon but it's not the Clio. I find myself some days pining for 7,400 rpm and the agility the Clio had.

There is no doubt about it if my situation changed and I didn't need a diesel I would have a 172 / 182 again just because they are a great all rounder.

Those people are fools, especially the ones who think that German cars are the kings of reliability. People are so status conscious it's scary, and the fact that most teenagers these days aspire to owning a 5-Series diesel is a little saddening IMO.

I completely agree.

A few of my mates said 'Ohh it's French, it'll fall apart, should have got a Civic' bla bla bla'. When it did break which wasn't very often, the parts were cheap and easily available.

Not the case on the German cars.

Ironically, the only car that's ever let me down is a Honda Civic... The clutch slave cylinder went on the way to Oulton Park lol.

Ah, so not people who actually hate the car through knowledge about it, but just people who hate the idea of them through ignorance just cause they are french etc.
Ironically they are very reliable (if correctly maintained) and hardly ever rust though as we on here all know!
Most of the problems they get are down to bad modifications, like removing arch liners then moaning the electrics play up after a couple of years of being wet etc! lol

I turned up at my last track and had a great day reminding myself how bad a driver I am and the cup not in the least bit bothered by my antics but I was the only standard thing in the pit lane. It's like the XROC where people bought a fiesta or escort and instantly stuck a zetec in it. Do you actually like the cars or just want another light cheap bean can to rape into a track hatchback that resembles very little of the original car. I'm not against modding but to be honest the only limitation on the standard car is driving skill and non cup rear dampers on cups to getting it round a track at a decent pace. If I was going racing or competing in sprints again it would be different.

Agreed, a standard cup in good nick is better than I am capable of really needing, lol.
I just enjoy modifying them, and it does mask my lack of track driving ability a bit then, ha ha

How do you mean the original product? The 172/182 in standard form or the ST 150?
