Fitted my 172 B&M quickshifter

Car  Ultra 197 ex 172 Cup
Fitted my 172 B&M quickshifter lastnight.

Instructions weren't very good. i found it easier to remove the whole of the plastic gearleaver surrounding (4 bolts underneath, unbolt the cat/centerpipe joint only) then stick it in the vice and easily remove the circlip with some pliers, then fitted the gearstick, then bolted it back onto the car, very easy.

Its a bit low for my liking as the Recaro seats are high, still its the first day so maybe i'll get used to it.

Coor.....that does look low.

I'm sure it does make a decent difference, but you couldn't have one of those with std 182 seats & reach it surely?

Waste of time these - took mine off and put standard one back on - beware of the crunchy gear changes

There is one of these on my Valver, I found I had to adjust the seating position quite a bit in order to get a comfortable reach on the gearstick, but still not sit too close to the steering wheel and pedals. But I like it, very easy to change gears, but I have crunched them a few times because of not being used to the shorter throw hence you have to be quicker with the clutch. :)

i might just buy the longer top thing for it, the stick thing instead of that ball, that will make it higher.
I havn't had it crunching yet, dont' think it will make my shifts any quicker as i gotta lean down to grab it ;) LOL, but does seem to make gear selection nicer and firmer.
I think with the standard 182 seat, you can lower the drivers one down max, it will be alright, the recaro's feel higher than the lowest level of the standard 182 / leather seats, as i had them b4.

So its not really a good option for Recaro seats. i am sitting a bit closer to the wheel and had to raise the steering wheel to get a kinda comfy position.

to be honest when i compared the 2 whilst fitting it, their is only about 1" difference in length. looks and feels more !! Also i wanted to post some pics of one fitted as i couldnt' find any pics anywhere :)

Get lower subframes for your recaros. The standard one is a bit of a reach still but I think if the gear lever was set further back it wouldnt be as bad.

172/182 gearboxes are crap, short shifters just enable you to break 'em even quicker...

sorry but it's the truth! :quiet:

for those that have one, do you not think the B&M logo on the top of the gear knob looks too much like it says BUM? first thing that my missus said after i fitted mine was 'why does it say bum?' now i cant stop seeing it :( lol

I must admit I didn't like mine either. I didn't realise how clunky it was until I had a 1.2 courtesy car. I could change gear sooooo much quicker on the std one...hence I removed it sharpish!

Chris

^ might have to get a leather one for the winter, i put a sock over mine this morning it was so cold (the gear knob)

nice one, i'll put a sock on mine see what it feels like  wonder how hot it gets in the summer !!! could allways put the knob in the girl friends hand bag, and take it with me, anit-theft device styleeee :rasp:

during the summer i learnt my lesson and did take it off when i was at work, my hand now reads M&B from the brand it gave me

I had a quick shift on my old saxo VTR and it was shocking though it wasnt a B&M one. The standard Clio gearshift is great as far as im concerend. If you think its bad you should try a saxo one!

waste of money, try it for a few months then put the standard one back in, you will wonder why you ever bothered with it.

hmm...varying reports here.

fitted mine bout 2 years ago.love it tbh. feels so much more direct than the std item, and its helps more with the full throttle changes......ppl say the quickness of it destroys boxes..not true id say tbh. fair enough iv destroyed a few boxes in me time, but iv only done 1 with the b&m, 2 with std stick, and the other 3 have failed due to d/shaft/circlips failing.

the 1 in the pic does look low tho tbh.

i drive a std willy and a slightly tuned one, 1 with, 1 without b&m....i much prefer the 1 with.

all down to driver preference i spose

well been driving with it for the day now, and i am getting used toit, i still think the ball part is too big, so will definately have to get a different knob for it. but gear selection is firmer/easier, especially(sp) reverse, reverse i so much easier and shorter, very nice. think i will grow to love it once i develop a gorilla length arm, lol
