FRST - Should I Stay OR Should I Go

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

I want something tunable which means turbo but am only 18 so really only gives me the choice of an R5 (too unreliable) Starlet/Charade/Uno turbo (all ugly) or the Fiesta RS Turbo which can be modded to look good.
I dont know whether i should sell mine for 1 though.
I could put nearly 2k into a good FRST from the sale of mine though but cant afford to do anything to the Clios engine at the mo. What dyou all reckon? Should i stick with the Clio: http://erc.qmuc.ac.uk/cliosport/file.php?image=1054209253__Mine_with_white_alloys2.jpg

OR BUY THIS: (Dont worry ill sort the venoms out! )
http://erc.qmuc.ac.uk/cliosport/file.php?image=1054209139__P5200003.jpg

Honest opinions welcome. Thanks, Mikey.

PM me for full details on my 16v which is in MINT condition and well cared for if interested.

Youre gonna get slated for saying the R5 is unreliable!

RS Turbo..excuse me while i go and laugh...

Charades handles well, ugly sure but all the ones you mentioned are!

Doubt it Rob even R5 owners admit that!

Care to elaberate on the amusing RS Turbo?

I would like a Ford to have all the tunning goodies available to me, i doubt the charade can be extensivly modded in the UK with-out ordering from overseas. Dunno though, but generally dont want a Charade!

PS: My Clio now has original phase 2 alloys on.

Hmm all have stuff going for them. If your going to tune then the Turbos are the only way (unless you have loads of cash).

I must admit that my 2 FRSTs were built a million times better than my Clio. Rust is the main Fezzie killer. On std 14s the Fezzie grips OK and handles badly. I got a set of 15s for my FRST and it cornered aswell as my cousins VTR/S. The biggest downfall to the FRST is the rock solid suspension - you either love it or hate it! On a bumpy road you get thrown all over the place! Apart from that I reccomend them as much fun if you get a goodun and increase the power a bit. As std they are slower than a valver. The engine sounds rough as hell too - for some reason when i upped the boost it ran and sounded loads better.

The R5 is quicker than the FRST as std and handles far better as it rides out the bumps better (most things would). It is made of tin tho and feels very old. Seems more unreliable (only had one mate thats had one and it broke down about once a month). Great cars and seem to be getting very rare which is good. The review I have of the R5 says its better to drive than sports cars 4 times as much.

The uno is is a good car too (apart from rust) - very understated and very very cheap! My mate had a bright pink one with 200bhp - very quick and not os understated.

Dont know too much about the starlet and charade.

One thing to remember is once you start tuning these reliability can go out of the window. My 165bhp fezzie was fine and my mate has his original turbo running 15psi (about 165bhp) and has done about 140,000 miles without trouble. Once you start going above 165 (stage 1) you are far more likely to get trouble - unless you just go for the 2.1 Zetec Turbo Fiesta straight away!! One of the lads on FT.com is over 300+bhp at the mo - but you need more than 2k;)

your valver looks really good!!! if i was you id keep this and just save up some serious money these are also very tunable cars!!! ever thought about a gtt conversion, very high bhp for alot less money than to tune your 16v!

  ff 182

Keep the clio it looks mint mate the rs turbos are nice but thay are crap and have loads of problems keep the clio.

Your pictures didnt load before, valver looks awesome.

Fiesta is sh*t. I would elaborate but it would be a waste of my fingers typing, thats how bad it is. Ford only got on the money 1995 onwards, and that was with a mondeo!

-Rob

  Elise/VX220/R26

deffo keep the valver. For me any sort of old turbod ford just gives out the wrong message. To many knobs driving them about with smoke pouring out the back . 5 turbo will give you greif but if you already own a valver ..... ;)

What about a BB turbo conversion for the valver??

Well if hes looking for cheap power a Non-Turbo Clio aint the way!! Or are you guys giving him the money for a conversion? The valver isnt a option is it?

As for the Fiesta being mailto:cr@p">cr@p Rob - that is only your opinion and mine is its a good car. I have owned enough of them to form a decent opinion - how many have you owned?

"If you want to say to the world "Im a knob" get Fiesta RSturbo."

another informed opinion LOL - you should be on Roy Bacer!

Touchy cos you owned one...im not a boy racer, ive been racing since i was 6 years old so id like to think i know a teeny bit about vehicle dynamics. Try checking proper reviews, not max power!

All i do is give honest opinions and try to share them, wouldnt want Mikey16vclio making the wrong choice, otherwise why would i give a sh*t dumbass?!

-Rob

Actually the Autocar test I have - result

R5GTT 1st

FRST 2nd

205 Gti 1.9 3rd

Fiat Uno Turbo 4th

I assume with you racing career (what thats got to do with anything anyway) you would change the result? LOL

The Roy Bacer thing was aimed at the quote "If you want to say to the world

"Im a knob" get Fiesta RSturbo." which you will see if you read it slower was not aimed at any comment made by you!

and WTF is this all about "otherwise why would i give a sh*t dumbass?!

You calling me a dumbass? Easy from behind a screen!! I suggest you take a look at yourself if you need to result to personal insults FFS! I dont and havent - how old are you BTW?

Go to http://www.fiestaturbo.comwww.fiestaturbo.com

It has one of the best BB board on the net IMHO

Fiestaturbos are nice cars, I owned a 2i for 3 years, but make sure U spend the extra money and get a well looked after on, dont go for a £2k pooper, Youll get all kinds of probs!

I would personally rather have one than a valver as I hate the interior in the clios its horrid!

save and get a newer clio

18! They will sting U for insurance!!!!

If you think a GTT pushrod turbo is unreliable, then just how unreliable will a CVH turbo be.....the CVH is possibly one of my most hated engines, horrible thing. design is fine, manufacture is awful.

GTT if you want a turbo.

  clio 20v

prob get slated for this but i quite like fords dunno why jus one of them things

Get a GTT conversion, a recently rebuilt, mildly tuned one should have at least the same power as a 16v and the reliability, plus you keep the Clio shell :)

  Clio 197

Power isnt everything. It is just one component of a complete car.

Naturally aspirated power is nicer than turbo power. More manageable and responsive.

The valver is one of the better balanced small cars ever made. Good power, handling and light weight.

mike, if your getting bored of the clio power, try and source a megane bottom end, this conversion makes the little clios stupidly quick, just look at the times Adi was pulling at york, it will be like a whole new car trust me. the Megane conversion is possibly one of the most under-rated coversions in the car modifying world. it turns a quick car into a stupidly quick car

hehe im a closet classic ford mag reader

mk 1 rs2000 with the wide rs 4 spokes and cossie motor for me

Get like an old escort and go rallying, cost you a lot less cos you wouldnt have to insure it for the road, my brother had one and they are cheap to get parts for so you can have a lot of fun doin them up.

There are more turbo cars, how about MR2 or the VW Polo G40 or even an old audi quatro sport (are they turbo?) they can go hell of a quick.

G40! now your taliking, although a little work is needed to turn them into monsters but then they eat gearboxs. ugly and old looking cars tho but they dont hang about, fast as fook with little work(chip, shorter S/C pulley)

  Williams 3

valver for sure.

Im thinkin of sellin mine aswell, but everytime I weigh up the pros an cons the valver comes out top. Wait and get some more money, insurance will certainly be a lot higher on an rst anyway??

And dont go for an older car either. Update instead if u really must change.

someone at work has one, was tryin to get them to sell it to me cos they didnt realise how rare they were!

It depends what you want - £ for £ my Williams is the best all round car Ive driven (so far) but if you want tremendous acceleration and cheap tunability then its not really the one. Guy next to my work had a G40 - treated it like crqp! used it as a work van/skip which was a pity as it was a nice car, after a year it looked pretty worthless.

my R5GTT has never been unreliable to me. and since the owner before me had it never had a problem with it. its actually more reliable than my williams was!!!!

Um, if you think that doing up an escy to any decent level of performance is cheap, think again! Rally aprts are expesive! abundant, but expensive!

oh so expensive........oh, did i mention they were expensive?

p.s. expensive!

p.p.s a fast escy is expensive.

A lot of the FT.com crew fancy R5s - I would too but there arent any decent ones in my area. They seem to be very scarce these days - I can believe about it being more reliable than a Williams lol

Oh and a MK2 RS2000 in Yellow is my favorite all time car but only when I can afford 2 cars will I get one - there may not be any left by then:(

Having not read this threead I may be repeating stuff.

The GTT is not unreliable. Certainly no less reliable than the CVH.

Anyway the CVH is a good engine, I had about 10 in the back garden a few months back along with a load of intercoolers, all gone now though, should have kept them and sold them.

You can get good power out of them but they have their weak points like cam life etc, expect to change the cam every few years.

yeah id do what clean says and think about a conversion a la adi, megane bottom end. If you had to go for a new car.....hmm, i go for the uno, they rock.

hehe yeh but it is by modern car standards id love one of them u could do some serious damage in that, i might hav kept the turbo but it just doesnt seem right

adi

no, a cortina has to be NA with smooth power just like the original twin cam.

they are cheap too!!

3K will get you one.

seen a mental turbod cortina on men and motors i think (fastest road legal cars program), had a blow off valve, you could see this jet coming out a whole in the bonnet, flippin mad.

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

Right i may regret this but my Clio is going in the FOR SALE forum and am looking at a FRST this weekend.

Spread the word and c the post there for full details.

Clean, went to Stockport (multi) but didnt c u so ive leant the VHS vid to a mate.

If i do get a FRST ill still keep posting hear and may have a cliosport sticker in my window like Craggy on his VTS to get away from the scallie image the car has.

PS: Im not saying the FRST is a better car but as Carlos has said i want something tunable at an affordable price otherwise i would love to walk into Hillpower and say build me Adis 16v, heres a few grand to start with. ;)
