Going to see a 172 Cup on sat...

ok after giving my mate a shot in my 182, he has decided he wants one, so found a guy who is willing to swap him for his megane (family on its way etc) and we are travellin about 400 miles to see it.. can anyone give me some pointers as in what to look for? questions to ask?

he is wantin me to go with him as he thinks i know a bit about clios.. lol

alot to check really ..............50k . will be well warmed up then .

check on full locks both directions at slow speeds for any knocking . ?
kerbing on the wheels easily done
usual stuff , has the person kept it clean , therefore well looked after , service history

cups didnt come with half leather ???
be very careful m8 , damaged repair doesn't sound good .

SO long as the damge is where he says it might be god value.
But so many Cups have crashed it amazing there any left.
Check that the front suspension wasn't chnaged due to the crashed some of them swopped ends on the limit so whilst it might be back end damage the front supension maybe bent. Just check it breakes and goes in a strgith line some tramlining and torque stear will happen but it shouldn't be to much.

  is non-existent
if its damaged/repaired make sure you find out who repaired it, if it went throught the proper routes of insurance(as opposed to an out of "court" settlement) check which garage did the repairs and has warranty on the work and weather it has all been documented, have a good mosy under the bonnet and look for any cables that are loose or freely hanging, check for leaks(PAS), check fluid levels and oil is nice and golden not brown or mucky, check fr full service history.
interior wise its pretty easy tbh, the steering wheel grips may be loose, cracked or worn. have a look under the boot mat for signs of water in the boot(leaks) erm apart from that test drive it before buying and listen for any unusual lumps bumps or groans abd dont feel shy to boot it afterall its what these cars are all about!

maybe get an independant mechanic to check it over or the aa???

Yeah the leather was the first bit i noticed, but the seller said he put it in himself.. the rear end damage does worry me aswell, but i think it looks ok in the photos.. is there anything like timing/alternator belts that should have been changed by now?

yep auxillary should be changed at 36k. although have to admitt a lot of renault garages dont bother.

if its a straight through exhaust, check its got a cat - need one for mot, unless you know the mot bloke. Loads of ££ from Renault for cat.
if its geniune, its a good deal.
I dont think side airbags in the leather seats will work in a tup.. a cup had that facility disabled (not that you wanna go testing this!!)
check the koni suspension has the white key to adjust the suspension - ask him what springs are on it..

Surely you can find a car nearer to you than 400 miles............
Almost 5K for a cat D 50k with other visable damage, shouts to me walk away!!!!!!!

You buy a car like this for it's handling capabilities etc etc etc so if it's not perfect why bother....................

Don't set your hopes too high that's all i will say....................

I don't think this car is worth an 800 mile trip. Tell your mate to sell his megane and buy a mint phase 1 172 or a very cheap, but local early phase 2.

think he has his heart set on this one tbh, but thanks for all the help.. will be really handy when i get down there!

Tell him not to rush, there are plenty of decent and good condition 172s out there for that price. Patience is a virtue. (so I've been told) ;)
