Got My Clio Sport and im Seventeen!!! :D

  clio 172 mk2
hey just took a browse onto this thread since i saw it im glad that u got ur license and ur car which i must comment is a wonderful car however as everyone advises dont let it get to ur head at all your 17 and no tom dick and harry can account for driving experience unless ur a god gifted child, experience comes over time a Long period of time from driving, and believe me you dont want to total your car it is by far the worst feeling in the world, i have experienced it at age 19 when my ford escort mk5 went over a open hole, lost control and veered straight into a pillar 1 metre long by 30 metres deep fully reinforced with steel, my car was fucked totally and i suffered a broken wrist and a various cuts, my friend suffered a seat belt rash which left a permenant 1 foot scar across his chest, and my other two friends one suffered a completely crushed face and the latter of us four suffered a broken hip,arm blood clot in his head and broken shin of which he permenantly cant walk without limping now.
believe me brother it is a seriously scary thing to come close to death at a young age u learn just how much to appreciate what a car can do and how much danger it can cause its like the saying "where there is good there is evil" "where theres a fast car there is a higher risk" just take it light and learn ur limits and i saw a post about how gib is not rainy that doesnt mean s**t really cause when i first drove my clio 172 i almost went off a cliff in dry weather just cause i underestimated the torque steer in first gear when i test drove it two years aback i have learned much since then and i continue to learn just take it light bro and you will enjoy the car in time....and dont use the excuse of how others your age has more luxurious cars than urself at ur age its not about how lovely the car is its about the inevitable danger of putting a fast car in a inexperienced drivers hands.

but im glad u are able to own such a machine at this age have fun and be conscious of ur vehicle and urself...know ur limit and appreciate the car for the beauty it truly is :D
bless

jeez cut the guy some slack here.....he hasnt crashed it yet, so thats a bummer for all those who were predicting one week!!
so what if he gets bought a quick car at 17? i know that there are responsible people out there (me being one of them) who dont drive like cnuts....sure i floored it occasionally but never anywhere dangerous....i knew my limits soon after passing
fair enough if hes come from a slow corsa to a quick clio but if hes been learning in the clio then he'll be used to it!!
anyways, thats my view.....in the words of clive tysley on pro evo..."controversial"

LOL, this thread is about 10 years old?

The kid has done well for himself, fair play!

Would you say no to a 172 at 17?

"Oh daddy i don't trust myself, buy me a 1.2"

Like f**k you would!

The most dangerous game I played when I passed was -

"How long can you keep your eyes whilst driving"

Thanx Savvy for sharing your past experiences as i know what to avoid, but i am really happy with my car and iv learnt that torque steer is quite hard to control, i normally just step on the brakes if i feel unsafe, there are alot of boy racers around here who have tried racing me but i prefare to avoid it because i know i am lucky to have a car like this at the age of 18 and every day my dad warns me if i were to crash the car i would mess up my insurance for the rest of my life. But as thecremeegg said, there are some responsible people in this world and i guess i am one of them let me enjoy my car without thinking of how many of you want me to smash the car, the same way you guys enjoy your clios....sorry about language if its a problem to you aswell but i really cba to make sure everything is perfect, iv passed English GCSE and its good enough for me :)

cut him some slack people, im very jealous of you but happy for you aswell, if he can insure one at that age then why not?!i know for a fact that i would in his shoes, i also know that 90% of people that read this thread would do the same if in hos insurance situation, so let him have his fun, im pretty sure he knows to be careful so stop patronising him!

Very welcoming, you can just smell the jelousy, once again the forum lives up to its name. just cause hes 17 doesnt mean he has to get a shed! any of us would of jumped at the chance of a 172 at 17! so get over it

F*** me! I am 28 with 11 years protected guaranteed no claims, and I got a quote on an Porsche 911 the other day and it was £1300...

At 21 I paid £1300 tpft on a 1.3 Turbo Metro and at 25 I paid £550 for my 172 Cup.

Mind you, when you come to uni in the UK you will probably have to buy a 1litre, cos as a foreign driver with a non-UK licence and driving on other side of road, you'll be paying thousands literally!!!

Pero, suerte con la universidad!

Whoopee-doo! Clearly too much money or rich and senseless parents... My God! A £26k car at 19... You'll have nothing to look forward to!

(And your parents clearly don't like you, as you are driving a very powerful car with very little driving experience. And that, my son, is a fatal accident waiting to happen.)

I'd be gutted having a 172/182 in Gibralter, there's nowhere you can drive it fast! Enjoy the motor :)

Some of the guys on here are jealous etc... but some are talking from experience! I've been driving for 8 years now, I'm 25 and I have a Trophy. I know that I have a lot to learn and I also know that if I'd had a fast, powerful car too soon after passing my test I'd probably not be here typing this!

It is true what they say, you pass your test and then you start to learn how to drive and that learning is all about experience.

Personally I agree with the concept of banded restrictions whereby you're limited to certain engine sizes/powers and as you gain experience/pass further tests etc... you can move up through the bands.

Similarly you shouldn't be thinking about sound systems, lowering, big wheels etc... you should concentrate on driving and nothing else!

There was a post on here recently which linked through to photos of a crash where an 18 year old girl had been allowed to drive her fathers Porsche and trust me they weren't pretty, especially the one of the a paramedic picking up the bits of her brain that were splattered across the road and putting them in a plastic bag!

If a 17 year old wants to save up and buy a fast car and get the insurance then good on them, but when a parent buys or helps their teenage child a powerful car then they are being hugely irresponsible and obviously don't have their childs best interests at heart!

  2008 VW Golf R32
They are not being hugely irresponsible, they know i am responsible and they actually know how i am, unlike you, you think im an idiot who will go speeding round gibraltar which there isnt much point because roads here are sh!t, you got to realise that stuff here in Gibraltar are different to the UK, we do not have never ending roads, here in Gibraltar its like a scalectrix track, you just go round and round the same route all the time, and you cant speed coz of traffic aswell....you need to realise that the UK isnt the world, fair enough you live there and it is rather big, but look at America, Dubai and some parts of Spain, people getting R32's at the age of 16 in america, a guy in la linea i know is 19 and has a V6, its not being irresponsible, its being able to afford it, and enjoying it!

No matter who you are or where you live giving your child a performance vehicle as their first car is irresponsible!!! Filling it full of powerful sound system is then just plain stupidity!

When someone passes their test all they have is a bit of paper that means they can drive a car on the road, they don't know how to drive that is something you never stop learning and only experience can teach it. That's not an opinion, that's a fact!

No matter how responsilbe etc... you think you are a performance car is dangerous because it allows you to go round a corner 50% quicker than you would in a standard 1.1. I'm not talking about balls out 10/10ths driving just at normal speeds you will naturally go down a road quicker because your car corners much faster etc...

To danger comes from the fact that when you come round a corner and there's something in the road your doing 45mph in a 172 whereas you'd be doing 35mph in a 1.2 Fiesta. You havn't been doing anything wrong, you've not been pushing the car anywhere near it's limits but because of what the car is you are suddenly in a situation you've never been in before and you jump on the brakes, lose the backend and crash.

Someone with 10 years experience will come round the corner see the obstacle, look for a safe exit point, apply the right balance of braking/throttle and steer around the obstacle.

This isn't targetted at you specifically this is a generalisation. Ask every person with 5 years + driving experience and I bet they will say something similar. When I was 17 I thought I was a driving God, I now know I'm a competent, fast driver but it's taken me 8 years a couple of crashes and some very close calls to get there and if I'd been given a 172 when I passed my test I'd probably be dead now so I should thank my parents for putting me in a 1.1 (I still crashed it)!!!!!
