guestimated power gains please

.. for Cam work on a 172. bhp wise or nm torque..

what will adding uni chip do ? to ad to those?

ive seen bbperformance tuning are testing their cams for the 172 + have a chip on the way so i was wondering what gains i couls expect roughly. i know on the autodelta for the 147 they have given a possible 20bhp gain claim and 1second off the 0-60 time are the 172s any different or can we expect the same.

to get the most out of your cams you need a chip as well.

Do a search as there have been plenty of posts about cams on 172s.

I aint got a 172 or anythin near it, but just wondered if anyone knows of any 172s that have been turbod/supercharched? If you can even supercharge them that is?

Im no expert but surely by doing a cam swap on a 172 all youre doing is using a hotter profile all through the revs rather than just at the changeover point and above? So in effect youll have the same or slightly better performance at the top of the revs in exchange for a lumpy idle and loss of power in the midrange and low down because the cam isnt working efficiently at lower revs?

Of course this is assuming a fairly mild cam swap, if youre talking about a cam that gives a genuine 20bhp gain on a 147 (is that a 2.0?) then thats gonna be a pretty wild cam, surely? And that sort of increase in power will be at the expense of pushing the powerband upwards...

Feel free to dispute this all though, Im just going by what Ive picked up over the years.

i know nothing about them.. check out autodelta website its on there. but anyways whats head work (no sex reference please ;))

I would have thought a cam would always sacrifice idle and low speed drivability for power. Although the wilder the cam the more this would be noticable. Piper do cams but they are reprofiled i think. Not to sure how a reprofiled cam would work as they reshape the original lobes and so they dont increase lift. I may be wrong but i thought thats what they meant by reprofiled.

I would speak to Andy at GDI or check a post he put on here ages ago that consisted of 172 new cams and teh SMT6 programmable chip.

the gains with cams, smt, filter and cat back exhaust were mostly mid range... nearly 25 ft/lbs.. the power was much smoother... peak power was up as well...... the car was down on power to start with but managed 168 (off top of head figure) ft/lbs at 4500 rpm.... (nice)...

so most importantly the drivability was up... I was pleased and so was the owner...

p.s. the lift can be increased with a reprofiled cam by changing the lift centre... moves the fully closed and fully open offset to a different point... that why only mid-mild repro jobs can be done on the valver/willy cams... to take it to a higher lift you need mechanical lifters and a new billet cam...

right ok i see what you mean. Do you think the reprofiled piper cams are any good then andy?

yep.... always been happy with them.... good service and quality is ALWAYS high...

you can design your own profile as well.... we did for my 5GTT... bit nutty!!! LOL
