Help! 172 sounds like a diesel!!!

When on idle you can here a dry rattle sound not unsimilar to a diesel. I have had all belts pulleys water pump etc done recently and this hasnt solved the odd engine sound. Car seems to drive ok a bit under powered possibly but no obvious loss of performance, only other faults is it often stalls from cold and some times when reversing even when warmed up.

Anyone got any ideas?

Check the exhaust back box for a starter. Plus the manifold/engine mounts.

Also check the plugs and coil packs.

Noise is defo coming from front end. Horrible dry grating sound, like something is rubbing/rattling together. Doing my head in!

Inlet Camshaft De-phaser pulley , sound horrible.
Once you rev it a bit it goes.
New pulley needed, so its cambelt off again.

mike - having read up on what you diagnosed it sounds spot on, so thanks. One more quick question, is it causing serious damage and how long can i get away with it? Having just coughed up £400 for cam belt etc i cant really afford to have it all out again. ill speak to garage that did the work as they could not spot the problem but as a non renault specialist am i hoping too much to tell them to sort it as they should have worked it out?

Going on the thread and the noise i guess you have bought the car i didnt buy, clio exclusive no.40 Y567UBJ

I bought that car on ebay for 3k recently, went up to burton on trent to view test drive etc, but didnt buy it because of that rattle...

I must say the car drove fine and was really nice, i just wasnt sure about that noise and was going on holiday 2 days after so didnt have time to fiddle about, the owner was also extremely rude about it.

I hope you dont mind me asking what you paid for it?
The s/s stealth exhaust is really nice too, the owner didnt know it had that fitted.

Hi

Paid 3k for it. As said its mint in everyway apart from this sodding rattle. Had hoped rattle was down to lack of service/cam belt change but had that done and still there. Back to mechanic next week and hopefully with Mikes spot on the pulley will get sorted. I factored in spending £500/£600 to put right and still hope ive got a good deal when work as been done. I only delt with the guys missus and she didnt know about the stealth so i kept stumm.

I spoke to the woman too, we had another 172 there and she swore that she couldnt hear the difference in sound when they were both ticking over! Her dad tried to tell me its just the tappets....

Really nice car though, glad the rattle is nothing major
