I enjoyed my Clio 172 for 30 mins and then it collapsed!!

  Clio 172
:(:( :(
What can I say - done 40 miles in my 02 172 and it's now very, very poorly in the garage.

Just paid for what looked like a mint and very well looked after example, driving it home from Warrington to Leeds, got about 40 miles down the M62 and the engine died and more lights were flashing than there are in Blackpool.

£122 to be towed home and now I'm told that the cambelt has slipped causing more damage than global warming.

Question is - faced with a bill of 'around' £1500 (probably means £2k+) would it be easier/cheaper to get a new/recon engine slapped in? If so, anyone know where from?

Cheers
Karl

ooh thats unlucky, my wiring loom melted as i was warming the car up on the drive for my maiden voyage!!

ouch, sorry to here that fella, get in touch with matt as people have said, or do a google search for renault specialist breakers and there site will come up , ask for matt.

Second hand engine is better idea.
Sounds like the AUX belt hasn't been chnaged as per the speciifaction at 36k which has broken your cambelt as it does.
If it is then either if your keeping the engine for ages get a new 172 one from brand new crated up for £1.25k or so and then its 15 hours offically to swop the engine although it can be done quicker. Matt will be able to have it swopped cheaper and quicker. A second hand engine is more like £550 and gaian same to fit but if you use a second hand you might want to fit new clutch and cablebelty/aux belt. Either way a new clutch is a good idea as it doesn't take long.

Thanks to all for the replies.

To be fair the guy I bought it off is absolutely gutted - he did just over 1000 miles from buying it from the garage mid August and he has offered me a couple of hundred quid cos he feels so bad. He really is trying his best. Fair play.

In my opinion the garage are washing their hands. All excuses and no action. I have asked them for £200 against a £2k bill and they have told me no way - but if I can get it transported 70 miles they will do it 'cheap' whatever that means.

I'll put it down to the joys of motoring.

ps. I have a £650 exhaust for sale on the car - not my cup of tea - think its magnexx or something (only done about 4k) from Demon Tweeks.

Thanks again
Karl

Thats sound squite reasonable from the seller not like he's obviuosly selling the car knowing it was on the edge of breaking.
As regards the garage I'd ask to get it taken to Matt in Accringtons place (Renault pecilast breakers) they can arrange towing if you need but they can do it quikcer and apart from cash in hand jobs from sole traders etc they will be about the cheapest.

Whats the reg mate. (put partial reg if you like)

I sold my old 172 (02 reg) to a guy in warrington. Might be able to fill you in on some history if need be

From the description it sounds like my old one.

I sold it to a garage in august and then it got sold onto a guy in warrington.

Also it had a magnex system on it. The receipt from demon tweeks for £650 was for the exsaust and a sports cat and some other work not just the exsaust :)

P.S. If it helps i sold the car on 52k and it hadnt had the cambelt done

P.S.S. If it was mine then its also had the inlets done and a group N ecu which the guy might not have known about if the garage didnt say.

P.S.S.S. If its mine then PM i will buy the sports cat off you if your selling

Is it safe the assume the 36K service replaces the aux belt as standard ? In the service book it says so but I never got a report saying what has been done/replaced on mine. Bit of a pain but I worry about little things like that. I have the 36K service dont at about 34k, im on 36.5 now.

The prrblem si it should be done buy mnay places forget that it needs to be done since under the ole 172/182 rules it didn't howver they failed that much Renault changed it so it should be chnaged but dealers still forget to quote or do the work.

if the garage stamp is in the book phone them, say you've got a 172 needing a 36k service and what does that include

  Turbos.
Surely you must have some sort of legal right to get your money back if it goes bang the day you bought it?

If you buy an item from a private sale then you have no legal right to return those goods. I always sell my cars 'sold as seen' with both mine and the new owners signiture.

This is every clio owners worse nightmare! Makes me wanna change my cambelt everytime i drive my 172 lol!!
