Ibiza Cupra or mk1 172

  Black Clio 172

A few opinions if u will - i am currently deciding between a seat ibiza 1.8t 20v (which can be chipped by 30bhp -hence faster than a cupra r and clio cup) and a mk1 172. i have had insurance quotes of 1500 for the cupra and 1700 for the clio (21 male with no claims bonus). Your views? and also how much does a chip increase insurance by?

With 190/195bhp, the Cupra will only be as fast as a good 172 - thats a fact!!

The 172 will piss all over the Cupra for handling, hence is a lot more fun to drive - thats a fact.

Overall the 172 walks it, but its up to you I spose, if we all drove the same car it would be a boring world!

and you are also asking a clio forum whether they would go for a clio or a seat? bit biased in my view?

Personally I think I would have the ibiza.

Those engines might not be the sexiest in the world, but boy are they tuneable.

go ibiza. 172s are great but tend to get bored of them quite quickly unless you live near twisties (burnham beeches) like me. Turbo has a good appeal to it.

loadsa elements to consider here...

- ibiza is bigger car, wife/kids/dogs/mates will find this helpful...

- turbo opens more tuning options, but ibiza (prob) less handling capabilities on the edge; but then, do you *really* need that...?

- what about re-sale values/residuals, how do they compare?

- which one do you prefer the look of?

- what kind of relationship do you have with the local dealers, wholl give you the best service over time?

Me? Ie got a T-reg Ibiza and its had LOADSA niggling problems, but overall its been a good car. Im changing it for a 182 before long, but thats mainly cos i dont like the new-look Cupras. Did drive 140 bhp Diesel not long back, 6 speed and it was lovely. Well impressed with it, 50mpg!! How about a Cup?????

Turbos are a lot more fun. Until you blow them or your engine, or your gearbox, due to souping them up.

I had a Fiesta Turbo for a few years & when I tuned it, it was a lot faster than my 172, but the handling & driving in the wet was very bad, if not deadly sometimes. But it was fun.
I just love the kick of a turbo.
But I do like my 172 as well, but more for its handling ability than its speed.

cupra

my mates got a 172 clio mk2

iv got a chipped cupra, with full miltek

to 60 its close buy after that you can just pass

240lb ft torque is nice when chipped to just shot your foot down in 5th keep it planted and you can see 150 on the clock

what about mpg- im pretty sure the 172 would beat a chipped one probably knocking the saveing from the insurance-should i mention mpg really though?

Ok found out insurance is 1200 from elephant with dad on policy!! - 400-500 quid difference is massive!! -this cud cover chipping and excess insurance!

craig... forget mainline insurance companies mate. try greenlight insurance for a quote. they were great with my mk 2 172. u need to be 21 or over and have 1 yr no claims

Been investigating - Cupra can be chipped by Revo to 210 bhp easily which can be switched off whenever u like. Plus does 0-60 in 6.5 and 150 mph easily. not bad for 1200 quid insurance for 21

172 faster than a chipped cupra?

cant compete with the later on speeds!

like i said my mates just got a 172 and it doesnt feel much faster than his old vts in terms of speed

chipped cupras have top acceleration

iv got a mate with a focus rs and from 5mph to 140mph we were neck on neck

thats 21o ibiza

and a std rs mind, but good going, dont tell me a 172 could do that?

good reliabilty with the vag group and the engine has big potential!

Standard vs stnd the 172/cup would be the better option, but if your gonna tune it the the 172 cant really compare for tuning potential. I would say budget £3000-£3500 if you want an ibiza to match/beat a cup in the handling dept and also be able to outrun stage1 2wd cossies with 280-300bhp and 300bhp scoobs/evos once rolling. Either way you cant really lose whichever car u end up with, good luck hope u find the car u want.
