Ibiza Cupra TDi VS 172

  Monaco 172 (02)
On a run yesterday up through mid wales and had a play with a Seat Ibiza Cupra 2005 160bhp model.
I've got to be honest the 172 couldn't touch it in anything other than the very tight and twisty stuff and even that was a struggle. The thing seemed to pick up instant power, and powered past me, even a 4.4 V8 TVR had a struggle shaking him off I know some of this can be down to the 250LB/Ft of torque as standard but I was shocked!

The guy claimed it was standard, I did notice a quite large intercooler poping out beneath the lower front grille. Do they go that well standard or are is that intercooler hiding something more?!

If they are like that standard then they are seriously quick, no match for the 172 :(

Must have been remapped - they will do 195BHP easily with a remap, and 300lbft torque.

The handling isn't great though.

Oh and it has 6 pot Alco brakes IIRC

Standard you'd be all over him

They can't accelerate as quickly, and don't handle as well so I imagine it was mapped. Ally had one and I remember pulling away under acceleration from it, in gear they'd have you but I was aware of the torque deficit and getting into a low gear nice and early to make sure I got away lol.

I owned a FR tdi mapped to 185bhp and 329lbft Torque, they are quick in a straight line, I could wheelspin 2 to 3rd, crazy torque but even with Coilovers chassis is poor.

I was pressing on as hard as I could to be honest trying to keep it above 5Krpm, I just couldnt believe this thing was as quick as it was out of the corners 'standard'. Do they have intercoolers in the lower grills on the standard models!?

The 6Pots do look awesome on them aswell.

  Megane R26
6 Pots aren't as good as 197 Brembo's :)

And yes, they do have a beefy FMIC as standard

These things remapped are ment to be mental fast...
There's a guy that goes about in the city near me with a Ibiza cupra running around 300bhp, just an animal.

Well he must have chipped it and kept it to himself!
He might have been quicker, can't imagine he was having as much fun though!

diesel torque is addictive in a different way from revs

I kind of know what you mean.
I owned a Gold GTTDi 130bhp and it was fun to floor it and have instant pull, but personally I never found them much 'fun' taking it for a blast.

Could quite easily have been modified and he just doesn't want people to know. I knew a guy who had one mapped to near enough 400lbft of torque with bigger intercooler etc.

The gearboxes must be bloody strong to take that sort of abuse. I have a 1.6 HDI Peugeot Partner and thats suprisingly nippy. Stripped out it will embarres many Saxo vtr/vts's off the lights. Just proves that diesel technology has came a long long way over the last few years.

doubt a peugeot partner van would touch a saxo vts to be honest mate. Theyre a very quick hatchback

it must be remapped and modified mate i was coming back from birmingham on the m69 and some 40 odd year old ass hole thought it wud b nice to stick his nose in my rear end while i was in the middle lane so i dropped into forth and started to drift away i seen him nearly catching up for about 5 seconds but then i just blew him off!! he then waved and put his thumbs up as to say nice 1 so i stuck up my middle finger to let him know what i thought of him! w*nk#r

They're quick cars especially mapped. 172's are reasonably quick but unless your in the right gear 100% of the time a decent turbo'd car either pertol or diesel will pull on you.

I'm loving my 172 at the moment but my next car will have boost, i've only had the 172 for a week and not even contemplating changing it for a couple of years but in the future I think i'm going to go down the torque route.

Its a bit of catch 22 really. I do like forced induction cars because of their torque and are generally a bit easier to keep the power up, but I also love the challenge and involvement of the 172.

lol, a VTR maybe not a VTS

Love my 172 also! Iv thought loads n loads of getting rid to buy quicker n newer but when u think about the running costs and what I bought it for (3.6k) the 172, nothing comes close for performance, looks etc etc..

Once the time has come tho I think the Corsa VXR is the next step up, light, torquey, good looking etc etc plus it's so easy to mod it to 230bhp for pennys!!

I like the Cupra's they suit the wheels and silver mirrors,

As said they go very well when modified but with that age old argument most cars do go well when there modified

After going from a 172 cup to a turbo vag, believe me, the 172 is far more fun to drive. It's not all about outright power.

As standard, a 172 should rinse the ibiza in handling and on the straights unless it's seriously down on power or the beeza has been toyed with. As standard the beeza's don't handle.

Going form a Cup to the Cupra, the Cup was more fun but the Ibiza has surprised me. In gear times are really good and they are just as quick, point to point. They don't handle as well as the Cup but the brakes are immense. To say they don't handle is rubbish. I used to think this too but they are not bad, if a little crashy. They can hang with 1*2's, that's for sure, not counting the driver's talent.

Standard v standard, not much in it. In gear, no contest.

The VAG diesel engines apparently quite often put out more power and torque than quoted, unlike the Clios.

They probably both have the same power, as standard.

Your right, not many things provide as much pace as a 172 for the price they are. I got my ph1 for 2.4K and its in good nick, its pretty quick and cheap to run.

Not a fan of the Corsa VXR's though, if I was going for a turbo'd hatch it would be an R26. The VXR's are very tunable though.
