Insurance on 172/182 at 19?

  C1 VTR (Company Car)
Was just wondering if anyone knew any companies that do a reasonable price for that age & car.

Come May this year I'll be 19 and have 1 year NCB and would love an RS. It's cost me over 3k to insure my 1.4 this year.

I've seen people who say they've been insured for sub 2k at 18 on an RS so there must be some companies out there.

21 with 2 years NCB, admiral, 119 per month for ten month policy with a years no claims at the end.
It's up in may and I'm going to swap to brentacre or green light. It's the way forward!

Edit: 22 now, but 21 when I got the 182
Personally I think you will struggle at 19

I'm consistently fascinated by peoples insurance prices on here. 600notes for a 21 year old with named driver NCB only? That's fantastic. My brothers struggling to get anything below 1500quid for 1.2s and 1.4s with 2 years own name! I know its all on where you live and stuff but he lives in a quiet town. I've got a cousin just passed that's being quote 2k plus for 1.0l!

For those using the ten month admiral "1year" NCB, quite a few companies won't take it as a year from a family members experience. (Mainly because it's not a year...)

At 21 I paid 1300 on my own Policy. It was costing me 1k for a 1.2 so It seemed ok at the time. 3years NCB (I had named driver too but they didn't seem to care) (It wasn't ok looking back its a wedge of money). And I live in an area of London on that spends a lot of its time on fire. Putting my Mum as a named driver brought it down too. That was a few years ago.

I have a 19 year old female lives in a safe area with a locked garage. she has been quoted 1700 when she passes test. on a 182 worth 3k. so can be done. :)

I couldn't run a 182 at 19. So glad I got one at 21.
And as for the 10 month 1 years NCB thing. It's all the same. Insurance certificate comes through post with a year NCB each time. Mates done same on his BMW and now changed insurance companies and had no issues

Never said it can't be done, I don't begrudge any of you I just find it fascinating that it can vary as much as it seems too!.

Also had a 18 year old male get tpft for £1650 on a phase 1 172 with one years no claims from his 1.2 16 valve. :)

Best companies seem to be all Admiral group (Admiral, Bell, Diamond & Elephant) if you can add some very experienced named drivers. Bare in mind though that these companies are not very modification friendly, they all appear to charge a set rate of £50 per mod on anything major (aftermarket exhaust, lowering, induction etc). This leaves you with the option of either trying to find a standard 1*2; very rarely see models that haven't at least got an aftermarket exhaust, the vast majority have more - or you can try and get one that is very lightly modified and pay £50/100.

If this route isn't for you, maybe you haven't got good named drivers available, then the next companies I'd go to would be Brentacre, Adrian Flux, HIC, Chris Knott and other specialists/brokers. These guys are more likely to be able to deal with a modified car; most run policies where you're limited below a certain BHP or the BHP can't change, but all other mods are free.

If you're prepared to do the work, then I see no reason you couldn't get sub 2k - get on the phone, try lots of the best companies, pit them against one-another, they will all often claim to beat any other price, so keep trying to work them down; it's laborious, but if it's an RS you want at 19, then it's never going to be easy, and all it is is some of your time.

You (and quite a few others on here recently) seem to be getting the wrong end of the stick. But seriously, fundamentally wrong...

It's YOUR personal circumstances that dictate your premium. Of course prices vary between companies but some people on CS seem to think there must be some magical "company X" that will insure all teenagers on hot hatches for peanuts regardless of whether they're a trainee lawyer or the type who like to hang around mcdonalds.

Those that are lucky enough to have affordable (£1300 - £1600 figures get banded around) insurance on a 172/182 at 18/19 without exception will all have the majority of these things in common:

* Good/excellent postcode according to the INSURER not according to you
* No points/no crashes/no courses & 1 or 2 NCB
* No/few mods (certainly not all "max powered" up)
* Employed (ability to pay the excess etc)
* Probably got a 10 - 20% discount for paying in one lump sum
* 3 named drivers, each with clean licenses and more experience (basically a lower risk)
* Relatively low annual mileage
* Reasonably high excess

Now, of course I am not saying EVERYONE in the world who insures an RS at 18/19 has all of the above (because that'd be wrong, clearly there are exceptions) but see how many of those criteria can be met by the 18/19 year olds insuring 172/182s. I bet it's most.

I have also heard 17 year old males unable to get insurance on a 1.2 8v for under 2.8k It varies so Much. the secret is phoning insurance companies direct. websites can`t give big discounts but when You phone them You can get a better deal. Haggle with them play one company off against another. You can Insure a 182 at 18 But You need to be able to spend alot of time phonng around brokers. Maybe a thatcham tracker and 1 years no claims. Ate least and then You will be looking at a minimum of £1380

That's ridiculous! My 1.2 16v was about 2k, wouldn't have paid any more! Going down to about 1k come renewal with elephant.

Steven103 summed it up.
I'm 19 and pay 1070. I come under pretty much every category. Although postcode I can't say, insurers decide on that.

I'm not suggesting that there will be a magical company that will give lower costs. I fully understand that there are many factors. I'm simply asking what insurance companies people are with so I can give them a go first.

I've no issue with spending time ringing around, I have a car currently so there would be no rush. And as for what you said above - I'm employed, 1 Year NCB, will be able to pay 1 lump sum, will be able to bump my excess up, will be able to add 3 named drivers. The only problem for me mainly is my postcode as its quite a low rated one, E iirc.

If I can find anything for sub 2k then I'd be over the moon. I currently pay 3200 a year with a tracker fitted on a 1.4s so it would be a great upgrade/saving for me. Otherwise I'm happy to wait till im 20/21 if that's the only option.

Elephant/Admiral/Bell/Diamond (all one group) are generally the cheapest for non-modified Renaultsports with youngish drivers.

Lots of companies may appear very competitive on normal/low insurance group cars but won't insure young people on quicker cars. E.g. Aviva were £400 for a cheap-as-chips car, £600 for a sporty mid sized family car and simply said "no" to a RS 182.

Bell on the other hand were more expensive for slow/normal cars (presumably to offset the claims on higher insurance risks) but will at least insure young people on a group 16 Clio.

19 - Admiral - 2 Years NCB - Clio 200 - My Policy, Dad and Nan Named Drivers - £1,200. I'm in full time employment (IT) which brings it down a lot compared to being in full or part time education.

My first year on my Saxo Furio at 17 with E-Car was £3,500.

I have a 172, and turnt 19 February 17th, year and half driving experience, 0nb, will have 1ncb by renewal time in May.

Current policy cost me £530 for my remaining 5 months of my VTR policy which cost me £1380. This is on a 10month accelerator with Elephant,

That is very very good!

I'll be happy if mine is 2k come renewal, if it isnt im selling the car. I will be buzzing for anything under 1500!

You bought it without even looking into possible prices?

As for Lordman; as far as I'm aware his policy is tpft, at least it was in his project thread; unless that was last years - still a very good price nonetheless.

I am insured on it now.. I just changed cars on my policy - but no i havent done a full price, as 5 months prior is pretty pointless and very inaccurate.

It is slightly inaccurate - but I would still be doing it for guidelines; all it requires is you going to a price comparison site, manipulating your details so they match what your details will be come renewal - mainly in terms of age and NCB, and then this will give you a rough idea. The ECJ Gender Ruling will help you also - it's definitely worth a quick gander; can't see the price being anymore than £100-200 out either way from what it will be come renewal time.

Im too scared too haha! It cost me an extra 530 ontop of my 1380, for remaining 5 months of a 10month policy.. So i calculate that in total it would have been 2500ish..

They say your first ncb reduces it by 50% so i'll be buzzing if it is 1250 !

Am i going wrong somewhere ???

Im 29 with 5 years NCB on a 172 and still getting spanked £1300 a year,

Got a quote from Flux for £650 then when called them to double check, it miraculously doubled back up to £1350

Think im gonna be giving Brentacre and Greenlight a call when my renewal is due at end of April cos cant help but feel i am getting Butt f****d when there is 18-19 yr olds on here paying less than 1k with 1NCB !!!
