Insurance thread for young 1*2 owners

not trying to sound like a d*ck but i think some of you are lying about the prices your getting (the young drivers) some of you say your 19 or 20 with either 0 or 1 year ncb and your apparently getting quotes of 1100 or 1300.

I'm 21 with 3 years driving and 3 years ncb, I've tried numerous amounts of companies and I cant get anything cheaper than £2500 so how the hell are you lot getting these quotes?

There are so many different factors to take into account. To name a few, your area, occupation, mileage, other drivers on the policy, how you intend to pay.

Cant stress enough, shop around.

You got me, I thought I'd come on a public forum full of people I dont know and lie about my insurance price.

Can I be forgiven?

Seriously though, have you tried the advice in this thread. Like calling the specialists rather than just doing online quotes?

I wasn't talking about you, if you read my post i was reffering to 2 other peoplein the middle of page 24, yep read through this thread number of times, rung the insurance companies instead of doing onine quotes, occupation is computer engineer, mileage is 5000 a year, not going to be communiting in it, pay it all in 1 go rather than monthly, post code aint great but its gonna be in a garage, believe me i have shopped around big time with no luck and its really starting to annoy me

Is it modified, try getting a modified policy with either brentacre or adrian flux, could be cheaper.

Also, tried greenlight?

I havn't bought one yet, got the money but i'm trying to find a decent quote before i buy it. i have done quotes with both modification and standard and the cheapest was adrian flux with mods that i plan to do and that was £2500, i have tried all of them insurance companies plus the ones Jon.g said. Does parking on public road really give you a cheaper quote? TBH i think its my postcode thats raping me for insurance quotes

Yes it does. I park on the road outside my house, as it's easier to due to it being lowered. The comparison between parking on a driveway/garage and parking on a public road was approx £70. Not massive, but every penny counts.

Much better way of doing it rather than giving the insurers MORE money. I am hoping for half the cost this year, better be anyway!

I've been having quotes on a 172 cup cheaper than a cup packed 182. Unheard of tbh.

I had this too, by around £400. Quote for cup was obtained january 11 but expired 5th march, then quote for 182 FF was obtained end of march. Surely insurance hasn't gone up £400 in 3 months? I mean, surely?

  • Mum, Dad & older sister all named drivers
  • 2 years NCB
  • No convictions/points/nothing
  • Risk catagory "A" postcode
  • 182 FF
  • Market value £3500
  • £750 optional excess (plus mandatory excess of £100 for the policy + £250 for being under 21)
  • 12 month policy
  • NOT covered 3rd party on other vehicles until I am 25 (this seemed to be the case with Bell & Admiral, so I assume elephant too and I wonder how many of my friends have actually checked to see if they are covered 3rd party when they drive each others cars)
£1347

All fantastic, until we got to:

Bell: "Does the car have any modifications or factory fitted optional extras"
Me: being honest: "Yes, it's got the "Cup suspension pack" and the "Cup spoiler pack"
Bell: "Does that make it lower?"
Me: "By 3mm"
Bell: "You mean 3cm"
Me: "No, 0.3cm"
Bell: "That'll be £93 extra"

Annoying but I agreed, after all I'd rather my spoilers/wheels/suspension be covered than them voiding my policy in the event of a claim. HOWEVER because "optional extras" use the same pricing system as "boy racer modifications" the "optional extras" seemingly void your right to certain other discounts (for example the experience level of named drivers is removed from their big "how much is your premium" equation) Things I've learnt for next time:
  • Make sure I am actually covered for 3rd party on other vehicles, and not assume I will be because every policy I've heard of includes this as standard
  • "Market value" is defined as "cost of replacing your car from an independant dealer" and not "how much did you pay for it" as I had assumed. I feel I could have justified putting an extra £500 easy
  • In terms of 172/182s at my age if I put a higher "market value" the premium went down, I guess they figure you'll be more careful with a 3.5k car than a 2.5k car. £500 seemed to make a good £100 difference in premium.
  • Bell are cheapest for no/low NCB, but as they gave me 2 years NCB as an introductory offer (because I could proove I hadn't made a claim as a named driver on my mum's policy) admiral or elephant would actually have been cheaper xD

Hope any/some of that will help someone, at some point :)

Try parking it on a public road. It's cheaper. Admiral/Bell/Elephant are popular as well.

i put mines as parked on a public road and it worked out cheaper for me too.

im 20, 0 ncb (due to being a named driver on my first car), 3 points, im the main driver with my dad (who also has 3 points) and my auntie as named drivers and im £1325 on my FF 182 with Admiral, i never expected it to be that cheap to be honest but im not complaining lol.

Just got a quote from Elephant for £1164.33 FC with £150 excess, £70 windscreen excess and £700 accidental damage excess

Thought that was a bit expensive, I'm 21, 4 years NCB, NO accidents, NO claims on insurnace, NO convictions or criminal records and live in a good postcode area

Tried Brentacre for a same quote and they came out at £1289.95 FC with £500 excess.

Why am I being penalised for being a good driver eh?

Same situation as you and my renewal price was the same(ish). Basra is a nicer place than my current post code though so thats played a massive part in why it's so expensive.

If I lived a couple minutes down the road I'd be near an old people's home, literally pensioner territory almost.

Just had my renewal laurence. It's the same price as last year, even though i'm a year older and have another years ncb. Got a quote with Bell £300 less.

just looked for a quote for a 172, not a cup.

stuck all my usual details, no convictions, risk A postcode. mother as a named driver. age - 18 with 0 ncb, named driver on another car.. and all the rest.

6.5k... nice one.

Going to have a look at a 172 cup on sunday. tried elephant for insurance. i am paying £1200 on a 1.2 for a year. and for a 172 cup it will be £2000. If anyone is struggling to find cheap insurance at a young age try elephant/admiral and put 3 named female driver with 15+ years driving experience and say you park it on the street.

  182 Trophy #333
25 + 6 Years NCB, managed to get mine down to £520 with the exhaust declared, really thought it was gonna be alot cheaper than that!

  2nd Black 1.2
2,099pa for a 1.2 8v?! fcukin riots have affected the cost of insurance big time. went up £300 in a month and a half..

It's that time of the year for me,

21+2NCB= £660.

Can't complain about that :)

That is a great deal tbh. Im starting to wonder how much mine will be next year already (only just over half way through my current policy). Paid £800 for the 200 this year. Hopefully will see some big drops :S
