Jon's Trackday PH1 172 project thread

There's one on the boot too. The bonnet has been up in the rafters of the garage for 6 months so it's a bit manky. It'll be de-stickered before the new ones go on :)

Oh and...

Just makes me smile.

The chavvy ones that were on the car when i got it. God knows who makes them. they weren't wired up properly before. they've also got inbuilt daylight running leds that look 'ok', i've just got to find a permanent positive feed and get them hooked up as well. The angel eyes are now wired into the foglight circuit, so i just put front fogs on and on they come. they don't look that bad, but i do have a set of originals should i wish to change.

Fair enough mate.

I do feel that looking at her in the light of day that you need a little more balance with the red. Maybe skirts red also? Just a thought ;)

progress!! looking good. Are you getting a harness bar fitted? I can't believe you left the tar removal to the guy doing the cage, the rage he will have gone through.lol.

  172, Tiguan
I didn't intend for him to do that, but he's obviously a sucker for punishment. I'd bought a new heatgun to do it myself.

Yes, door crosses are going in and harness bars.

Not updated this for a while, but I paid a passing visit to the Clio this weekend. This is all a bit copied and pasted from Northloop, but:

(Uncle Benz is Gareth, the guy working on the car)

Jon arrived this morning with his seat. The aim was to get him in the car to establish the seat position so I could continue with mounts and harness positions.

After some discussion we decided that, because Jon is a lanky fella, the best solution would be to put the seat straight on to the floor. This involved removing the original rear seat mounting rail. Once this was out Jon sat in and happily could reach the pedals fine.

Jon - Box section of the floor was cut out before seat got mounted in:

(The seat cannot go lower than this!)

FIA regs mean that there must be 40 square centimetres of contact with 3mm thick counter plates at each mounting point either side of the floor. These counter plates were made and welded in, and the seat mounted.

Seat in, feels lovely!

The passenger seat will be mounted in the exact same way.

The cage is looking marvellous, I'm really chuffed with the way it's gone in and the work Gareth has done so far. It's going to be great when it's all finished.

What's not so great was the news that Gareth had found an oil leak on the engine and sadly it's not a quick fix (unless, as it turrns out, you're a specialist with all the right tools to hand - Thanks Fred for the advice). The inlet pulley, or dephaser pulley, is leaking from the seal behind it. It seems to be that the seal can be pushed to far into the head when it's all being put back together and it's a bit of a beginners mistake. My Dad put all this together, but it could've happened to anyone as it's a pretty easy thing to do by all accounts, so c'est la vie! Sadly it's all got to come back off again as the belt is saturated and to get to the offending seal the pulleys have to come off.

I'm now in the process of sourcing the locking tools again, though this time i'm trying to buy a set rather than borrow as they'll also come in useful when i build up the other engine. It's a right royal pain, but nevermind. I think Gareth was dreading giving me the news.

On the plus side I've already sold the seat subframes so that'll help with the budget here.

I only took 2 crap pictures, so here you go:

Just read the whole thread from start to finish! Would love to have the time/money and knowledge to do this with a ph1 172

Keep the work up dude!! Subscribed!

Thanks chaps. It's getting there eventually. Leak is a bugger, but i'll sort it!

Craig, I wish I had the money and knowledge as well sometimes! :)

I've been buying a few bits over the last few weeks.

New bootlid to replace the one with a dent in it on the car (phase 2 rear end now complete)

Spare engine project:

Complete bottom end (that i'll strip and rebuild)

Also, had a brief trip out last night to a cold Middlesborough and picked this up (i've just lifted this out of the BMW by myself

Essentially i'm only going to use the head as the bottom end has some 'issues'. It apparently runs fine and had a new cambelt 500 miles before it was broken. It's a 182 engine with 55k.

Anyone see the obvious problem?

Just read from start to finish great read. shame about the leak though.

Cheers chaps. Shell, i'm in Langley Moor.

I'm currently trying to buy a set of locking tools as cheap as possible in order to sort out the oil leak myself in a few weeks time. Reading up, it shouldn't be a bad job - though cheapest I can find a cambelt for (belt only) is £45.

All tools are £160 from Renault :D

I was advised against getting the cheaper laser/sealey tools because they bend.

Shame about the oil seal!

  172, Tiguan
Hi mate. Yeah, reading up a bit it seems as long as the pulley tool is genuine you are ok with the others being Laser/Sealey parts. Reason being the pulley tool should be the one that takes all the strain. I've purchased a second hand gen reno pulley tool and will probably end up with Sealey/Laser horseshoe tool and locking pin.

  172, Tiguan
Yes Dan, matching pair.

Should be collecting it mid January then first job is to fix the oil leak.

Christ Jon, you must have some guns hoisting that out on your own. :hail:Found it a right ball ache lifting one out of my 106. Had to drop it onto a tyre.

did it empty itself of oil completely? Sump looks bone dry?

  172, Tiguan
I think it's been in that state for a while mate. There are a few drops of oil leaking out so it's not totally bone dry. I must admit the back of the BM is pretty low so i rocked it onto the boot lip and then just went for it, lol! It's not moved since as i'm still waiting for the extended cog that goes on the pulley locking tool to turn up.

  Golf GTD Mk7
It's worse when you try and lift it, the suspension on the car raises, and makes it ten times worse.lol.

Hi mate lovely project. Love the attention to detail. I have currently just bought a 1.2 mk2 ph1 Clio with the intention of making it a full pledge track car.
I am currently looking at building my own cage for it but I am unsure of how much material I need to purchase. I know im taking the P*ss a bit but would you measure your cage up to see roughly how much material i would need? Unfortunately i havent got the car back from where i have purchased it yet so it not as simple as nipping outside to measure it up.
Keep up the good work.
Ta Dan

Just epic mate, read it from start to finish i'm planning on doing this to my old PH1 when i buy it back :). I'm mechanically minded as im a fitter/turner by trade but I am no car mechanic. Is it hard rebuilding a F4R? My usual work is on rotating equipment but I do know a little bit about car engines. I'd like to have a separate F4R lump on a engine stand to build accordingly then swap from the PH1. I want to have a go at building it myself and learn the hard way
