Picked up the track wheels from the powdercoaters today, slicks are in the shed ready to be fitted so all coming together for Cadwell park on the 17/3

Can't fault city wheels in Birmingham either, 20 quid a wheel is a bargain. Not immaculate, but by God they're ideal for the price point

04-02-2019 Cam timing and remap

Took a trip over the pennines today to visit @bloke to get the 197 cams timed in then straight over to see Chris at EFi for the whole setup to be mapped.

Cold and foggy trip in a car with no..... well no anything really. But the result was a surprise to say the least.

Thanks again to both Chris and Carl, I'm a happy chap.

So spec is:

- stock engine
- 197 cams timed to suit
- RS2 inlet manifold
- 197 injectors
- 182 exhaust manifold
- pas delete

Mapped on shell vPower

Cheers

Ben

  Clio Williams
That lil mk1clio is going to fly. Very good power but with torque to match. The torque is right down at 2500rpm. Very William's esque??

21-02-2019 Boot badge refurb

Refurbished the badges on my boot strip, over time they turn white and eventually wear away the lettering completely.

15 quid sticker kit from Ebay and good as new. The kit itself is superb, fitment perfect, finish perfect and hopefully longevity will match, time will tell

Pics!

17-03-2019 Cadwell Park

So, the car was ready, steady cruise over to Louth on Sunday morning with the car loaded up with the slicks. Weather looked to be holding off despite recent rain and there was 3 mk1's going to be in attendance. Set off excited as a kid at Christmas.

Few warm up laps done on incredibly busy track, and then several red flags meant most of the morning was a write off as people weren't ready for the drying, greasy track. Then just before lunch my crap exhaust joint over rear beam decided to fall off, then someone blew up on track for another red. Lunch was called.

Track dried, slicks on, exhaust fixed and the afternoon improved. However despite a good couple of sessions the cars handling still isn't right, it's too twitchy and front end grip is abysmal in all honesty. The tyre temp gun told me I had nearly 20 degrees temp difference across the front tyre width both sides. Too much camber basically, I think the stiffer suspension and roll kit mean it's cornering much flatter and not rolling onto the full tyre width under heavy cornering like before. So basically I need to dial out some camber and I think track it fully parallel to reduce the issues.

I also need to make a decent reliable and well fitting exhaust, this new one is quiet enough and that's good after the issues with last one, but now I know it's okay, time to make it work correctly and not fall apart. Lol!!

And finally towards end of day car felt really flat, and on way home started missing badly. Turns out I've got a faulty injector plug that's half smashed causing contact issues to the injector for number one pot flywheel end. So that needs sorting too.

So overall, a mixed bag, not the best day and the car is capable of so much more, few fixes and tweaks and try again soon!

Anyway couple of pics. And hopefully next time even more mk1's

Cheers

Ben

Cheers guys, she's nearly there I think

@Brigsy didn't get to exploit it due to the grip and injector issues but hopefully next time she'll be fully on point!

Tbh they're set completely wrong I've just been too lazy to sort them. Should be set exactly opposite for max caster

So started the sprimg tinkering on the old girl recently.

Taking my time as frankly I'm not going to get to use the heap for the foreseeable!

First upgrade was to replace the odyssey gel battery with a ps-06 lithium battery, this thing is obscene, 900g and cranks the engine perfect. Isn't technology great!

not the neatest install but functional until I get a proper bracket

Great batteries.

I’ve got one in my car too. When I first received it I thought they’d forgotten to put the battery in the box!

I just keep mine plugged in and charging all the time as I find that the battery is flat within a few days if not.

Around 4 years ago I acquired some 172 stub axles and camber shims, having never got around to fitting them decided since the car want be used for a while I'd tackle this mod.

In all honesty been putting it off as removing the old caliper brackets and stubs (which are pressed into the rear beam on the mk1) is a pig of a job.

Rusty crap:

IMG-20200402-WA0055.jpeg

Rear assembly stripped down, note the 4x torx head bolts that will no doubt cause me no end of grief.... Left them to soak in penetrating fluid and I've gassed up the blowtorch ready..... Watch this space

IMG-20200402-WA0042.jpeg

So instead I set about refurbishing the various components, either wire wheeled back, Hydrate 80'd then hammerite or powdercoated. Plus new genuine discs and bearings. Carbon Laraine RC5 rear pads aswell to try out, never had 'performance' rears before but they came up cheap while back so why not chuck them on!

All I'm awaiting now is new studs as old ones were knackered really and stuck in the old discs so for sake of few quid I've just ordered 8 new.

So everything cleaned, painted, refurbished and good to go...... s**t that means now I've got to actually tackle those torx 😥

Mines been sat in house for a week, dropped from 13.6 to 13.5 volts, lol! So I'm not having that issue!

More progess today. After attempting to fit the disc shields soon found out they're incompatible with the 172 hubs. Never really thought about it before but the 1*2's don't have them.

Appears maybe ones from a Megane mk1 F7R may fit but suspected hens teeth.

As such cracked out the dremel and mocked up the hub to set about making them fit.

Rear two bolts are fine, front one in the sculpted section of the shield miles out.

All hacked up and fitting now, just need to fab a little bracket and then sorted.

Cheers

Coops, I’m tackling this job on my GTT. Three Trix bolts stripped on one side and one on the other. Not sure what to do with the old stub axle? Tempted to just cut it flush? May need an oxy torch to help out!

you'll need to cut the caliper mounting bracket off and then either bash the stub out the beam or yeah chop it off flush with an angle grinder. that's my backup plan too if it all goes wrong. however you'll still need to get the torx bolts out to retap and reuse the bolt holes to mount the 172 stuff to the axle

Painted the shields with thier mods and little riveted on brackets and then mocked up both sides. New studs showed up too.

So I know I've got all the parts refurbished and everything there now so jobs a good un.

Blowtorch at the ready for the weekend
