Mirror cap Glue - S1 Rallye

I've been doing up an S1 106 Rallye this last couple of weeks:

and today decided to take the mirror covers off to reveal the original mirrors, only trouble is the glue left behind on the mirrors won't come off. Its very rubbery and will not peel at all - any ideas?

Try applying some petrol or lighter fluid on a cloth and wipe should remove/lift the glue.

No joy I'm afraid, the stuff really is like rubber. Petrol doesn't touch it.

Have you applied any heat to it ?

Think thats going to be my next port of call Rich. Just got to find a hairdryer!
