MK1 172 Vs GTI MK5?

Right so the 197bhp Golf, faster than the Clio Mk1 172? I thought so until the other night...

So we are sitting at the lights and i pulled away kept up with him until 4th gear he got in front of me marginally (half a car length) but he wasnt for getting away from me, i though these were faster than claimed but ive since read they do 0-60 in 7.2

Thats pretty poor for 197bhp!

They only do a ton in 18 secs. pretty similar to the clio in all fairness.

will say tho, the e30 (edition 30 ones) which have 230hp, remap to 310hp! Due to the k04 turbo. They fly then

the dsg ones are rapid cos along with launch control and perfect upshifts each time, they're pretty tuff to beat from the line.

Build quality mate, hold their value better, can be made quicker a lot easier etc..

As said, rather have the Golf, but they're not particularly quick.

Still, there's a fair leap in price from a Mk1 172 to a Mk5 GTi...

The GTi is down on power for that size of car, compared with Leon, Megane etc. Still a nice car and a much better buy than the R32. A 172 should be as quick up to a point.

Well i stayed in Crookston with the old dears up until 3 weeks ago then i spread my wings and bought a gaff in penilee

They are actually quite poor off the line. There's a small delay when you put your foot down as the gears/clutches do a little shuffle before the car moves. So although the 0-60 looks good on paper, in reality it won't step off as quickly as the manual. Problem with all dsg's, even the new GTR does it.

Really? I was quite dissapointed with it to be honest i expected it to burst away all guns blazing but this wasnt apparent when i was still beside him until 4th gear.

I think he was rather suprised/dissapointed aswell tbh!

Didn't they do some test with a Japanese dude that was famous for quick gear changes in a manual and a DSG beside him, and the DSG won...?

tbh you NEED to use the launch control with dsg to get the best start

in case you didnt know the gti's and r32's had it,turn esp off,left foot on the brake,right foot flat down,will rev to approx 4k or so,let off the brake and it does a great launch

i didnt know this till i went out in one at work the other day and my mastertech showed me (i work for vw lol)

it probably has the edge on power but i'd guess it is heavier

yeah it's been remapped I've not had it RR'd but I'd say it's probably about 190 BHP

it goes a lot better than standard which tbh was a bit poor

i found that there wasnt much lag,very good power delivery,but lacked that thump in the back,bet it mapped is really nice!

My dad has one. Not had the pleasure of driving it yet. Had a wee do with one before, was nothing in it tbh. The turbo will give it the edge up hill and at higher speeds though. think my dad is the slightly more powerful one though?

Not a lot in it tbh.The mk1 is quicker as standard than a 172 so could be close

I was even with a manual one, a dsg killed me...perfect shift every time when he's in the S-mode.

Best Motoring tested it against a 225meg and the golf dsg beat it acceleration wise

Yeh the Golf is a pretty heavy moter hence the reason u dropped him on takeoff..
Im pretty sure the 172 cup is quicker then the vr6 Golf on takeoff as well

the DSG one is a trick, but the real key is the fact that the car is turbo so the tuning posibilities are far far easier than the clio
