Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project [Year 3 - Engine and Chassis Rebuild]

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

See my mate in his yellow 5 managed to sneak into shot in one of the pics

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

They are 205/50/15's, GG compound..... Only got them as they were a tenner a tyre a few months back, as the guy couldnt use them on the road anymore. They've done 3 days (two wet) and still got a fair amount left. They are pretty wide but I seem to have enough clearance when pushing and not heard any scrubbing/rubbing as of yet..

Times wise 2009 before the box went in the bone dry with Kumho versions of R888's on I did some 57/58 sec laps with a passenger on the videos, this year from that last session video its more like 59/60 secs and mostly over, admittedly I was not going all out first corner as I was pretty scared of blowing the box again lol.

Wookie - I had a good few outings behind and in front of him throughout the day. Hes in the video above for a lap too I think!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

I saw that, i cant work out if it was him or his missis driving in the vids, my mate danny was going round in a blue mk1 escort aswell, not very quickly, but very sideways lol

Yeah, they were parked next to us all day, I remember the passenger in the picture driving the 5. Cant remember who was driving in the video either, but I tried to find the guy after we had come in to find out more about the 5 but he was nowhere to be seen lol.

Well, something is clunking when going up an incline and turning left, but it drives true and straight so I think its a balljoint or track rod end. Be alright for now until I can be bothered looking at it!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

The 5 is basicaly stripped out, 172 brakes, megane 2 litre on r1 throttle bodies and mega squirt, unfortunatly mapped by a local 'rolling road expert' who doesnt really have a clue what he is doing, and all put together with the 'cable ties are far too posh' method lol which explains its suspect reliability, but it works and is cheap. None of them had been to Mallory before, and had to drive back to Plymouth afterwards so for once were being causious out on track.

I have a knock on my clio which is the dog bone mount bracket onto the box coming loose on the bolts, i 1st noticed it just before the box lunched itself and now i keep having to do the bolts up, im assuming washers need to be welded on incase the holes have ovaled, but i just dont have the time to look at it :(

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yeah I spotted the brakes, didnt realise it had that engine though! Cool.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

The gremlins are back - intermittent starting problems now!

Over the past few days ive gone to start it and had nothing on the key, not even cranking from the starter motor. Quick tap of the solenoid and try again it usually fires up. No idea why as the starter isnt old, only replaced it towards the end of last year! Thats been fine over the past day though, the problem seems to have changed.

It will just crank over and over and over, never firing - the exact symptoms ive had many times before with ECU issues (Pump still primes and runs etc) Although, if you turn the ignition to stage two, and back to off a couple of times, then go to start it - fires up perfectly fine? If you turn it off once its running and start it again its fine, but if you leave it for 10-15 mins the same problem is there, cranks and nothing.

Im quite certain its not the ECU. The only other things it could be is either relays or the CPS. Ive swapped the relays round to see if it makes any difference and cleaned up the CPS connector, but I really am not sure how it only starts doing it again after being sat for 10-15min+...

Meh!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Isnt the Immo (injector/coilpack release) a different relay to the fuel pump/ECU relay? Im hoping swaping them round will change something, ive got a load of spares somewhere but it was p*ssing down earlier so didnt bother looking..

Im pretty much 100% confident that it isnt the ECU, as if its an emulator problem the fuel pump primes twice in a row when it decides that it is going to start, and its not done that..

Edit: Just been out to try it again (stood 30 mins since swapping relays around), just cranked and cranked with no startup. Turned ingnition off, on, off, on, off...then went to start it again and it fired up perfectly - very very wierd!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

one relay is injectors, the other is fuel pump and coils - I think

does your rev counter move when cranking? Not sure if it does on the clio, but on the 5 it's a clue as to whether the TDC sensor is OK.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yeah ive seen it move on cranking in the past, Matteh said his did too. Il check when I go back out. Hmmmmm.

Thing is, the 'twice - on off' trick works every time which is the odd thing!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

It will only start first time if its straight after its already been running...

It wont start at all now unless you do the 'on off' thing twice, then start it..

What do you mean?

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Lol, oh dear.

Well f*ck knows what it was doing. Hammered it earlier, left it for about 20 minutes then it started first time. Who knows :(

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Jord, mine has the same issue, as done James' from JMS 172. The injector rail doesn't get primed on the first turn of the key to the number 2 ignition position.....in mine you can't hear the fuel pump fire up on the first attempt but if you go back to off and then back to position 2, it fires up which obviously then primes the rail and then it starts!

Odd problem. Either its a dicky relay or the fuel pump isn't happy with life. Who knows! Mine needs sorting as well.
Only seems to occur when the car has been sat for a while though......

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yeah, im hoping its a sticky relay as im bored of fault finding. Its been fine for 4-5months, and just out of the blue this happens once again.

Got a couple of spare relays im going to swap to later, hopefully the problem will go away. My fuel pump even runs when cranking like normal, just never fires up!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Got a handful of relays yesterday - including trying some off a known working car today (1.2 16v Mk2). The car eventually runs with them all, but it takes alot of playing round with ignition off/on as it did anyway - so I think its nothing to do with the relays..

Had the crank sensor off and cleaned it up, checked there was no sh*t on the end of the sensor etc, refitted and its no different. If the car has been driven for a while, or driven hard then turned off - it will start straight away again. BUT once its been left for 15-20 mins the same starting issue comes back. Not sure what if anything could be related to heat?

I think the only things left is a wiring fault or the ECU :dapprove:

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

can you not stick adams ecu in and see if it still does it or next time i come up you can try mine to see if it still does it.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Wot ever you need to pinch off my car to try and see wot it is let us know and ill pop down as I've got a week off work

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Another week off? lol

Only ECU and crank sensor to try really, its 100% not the relays. Problem is it will only do it after its been sat for 15-20 mins, so its just a matter of waiting around...

I have no idea mate - but have you tried another ignition barrel - just my two pence worths.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Could it be fuel pump? Its just weird that it takes two attempts to start it from 'cold' so to speak. Like yours, mine is fine if its been running and say i stop for fuel, it starts on the first turn but leave it a significant amount of time it takes two goes. Strange.

Mines done it for a while now and im just used to it. Bit of a ball ache mind you...

I had thought of that, but infortunately ive not got a spare one anymore. Might be worth trying..

Possibly could be, Il check it next time it does it. Ive got a spare fuel pump I could swap to for testing it anyway, we shall see.

I tried to get a video of it happening today, but its not done it once in 7/8 starts - typical!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Speak of the devil...

although it only took 1 attempt this time...

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

ive got a spare barrel from a 306 which im certain is the same a clio one. it looks identical iirc

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

If you can find it grab us a few pics when youve got spare minute if you dont mind :)

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

since it's only likely to be the yellow wire giving the problem you could hotwire that and see if starts then. I'd dismissed the switch earlier after you'd said the pump was running whilst cranking. I think the fuel pump relay coil is powered by a switched live.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yup its on a switched live. Ive had my hand on the pump on cranking and im sure its running - although its hard to tell with the amount everything vibrates. It was stood all last night and started first time on the key this morning, yet other times it takes 3, 4 or even 5 attempts to get it going. Im sure its not the relays, nor the crank sensor, as I would no doubt have more issues if it was that, and problems once running....

Not ruling out the fuel pump itself yet, but il probably try the key barrel and fuel pump before anything else. Il try hotwiring it next time it happens, rather easy only being spade connectors on the barrel :)

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Sounds like mine with the crank sensor problem, although they are kinda different cars lol.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

have you checked to see if fuel is pumped to the engine when it doesnt start - and then again on the second click ?

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yeah, well im pretty sure the pump is running on cranking. I guess I can confirm it by popping the feed off the rail and see if anything comes out when cranking...

Its been the same today, but once or twice ive just had nothing on the key at all, it will prime in position 2, then you go to position 3 and there is nothing, no solenoid/starter etc. Although, if you hold it in position 3 for long enough (20-30sec) and wiggle the key around, it starts fine. Certainly seems like a dodgy key barrel could be a possibility to me?

  53 Clio's & counting
Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Id say definately a dodgy barrel, do these run a convensional ignition switch on the back of the barrel? Id say its that if they do
