Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

It wouldnt be the extra length of wire creating like a drop in current?

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

matteh has extended his with no problems....The wire I used must have been damaged/dodgy part way down somewhere, all joints were ok!

may try again with brand new cable when I can be bothered

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

well, partially ;)

Thanks to Whiteley+Daz Clio Cup, I now have the main elements fitted...

Will write an update later on :)

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Ok....so set off at 6.30am this morning for Whiteleys, as Daz had offered to weld the cage in for me...

The aim was to get the footplates in....along with the main hoop, main rear stays, rear diagonal, front a-pillars, screen bar and door bars. Due to a few problems with the profiling of the door bars, they were left for the time being, but the rest is now in :)

The parts...

Main hoop footplates first...

Then the main hoop welded to the footplates...

Then the rear stays...

Rear stays fitted, front footplates and bars fitted...

Last we fitted the rear diagonal and the screen bar...

We didnt manage to do the door bars, as the profiles on the pipes were not good enough, plus I want to change the positioning slightly, so that will be sorted shortly...

Still to fit are the harness bars, lower rear stays, and door bars as mentioned above. Will hopefully get this done in the week!

The car feels so much stiffer and 'together', coming from driving it without a cage for 8k miles or so, track and road! The test will be Cadwell a week on monday, to see what real difference its made..

Im sure Whiteley will contribute some pictures in here at some point...

More soon!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

cage looks mint in person!!

some parts like jords already mentioned dont line up as good as it shoud tbh, some places theres like an 8mm gap where thge bars meet...

Daz has done a mint job on the welding, as you said jord the car shell is like paper thin compared to the cage itself...

cant wait to see the door bars cut to shape this afternoon!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

nope all been sanded now, didnt think to take any to be honest...

painted the underside where the underseal burnt off today, then re-sealed it...also re-done the door bars ready to weld in now

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Apprentice welder, find myself looking at welds all the time

You'll know then how much of a pain in the arse a french piece of tin is like to weld with a no gas mig then?! lol

believe me the welds will hold, they just ain't too pretty!

Re: Mk1 172 Hybrid Track Car Project

Did you use flux cored wire?

Is the cage welded straight to the chasis or is there plates inbetween?
Did you stitch weld to keep the heat down?
Any underseal catch alight?

Gasless, so yes.
Footplates to chassis, cage to footplates.
No.
Yes.
