My new toy. LY Megane R26

  LY R26 #288
Not a great deal to update, been a while since I've posted anything.

Bought some new rubber, was going to go for the Goodyear Eagle F1's as recommended by a few people, but after putting my order in to camskill, they emailed me saying they only had two in stock. So I cancelled my order and opted for the new Nankang Ns2-R tyre that seem to be getting good reviews over on the megane forum.

Also Had to remove the cheap HID kit I'd fitted only a few months ago as the ballast was f**ked and kept popping out the fuse. And the engine bay fuse box on the Megane is the most retarded design ever. You'd never change one of these fuses by the side of the road without tools.

13535528535_f033ced2d6_c.jpg

Also fitted an auto dimming rear view mirror which is pretty awesome and for the cost of £17 I was well happy with that. All the wiring is present to fit one aswell.

  LY Megane R26
I bought a set of them NS-2R's too, which should be here today.
Did you get them from Camskills? I Bought them from TyreLeader for £83 each in 225/40/18 in the medium compound!
Was going to go for RSR's as iv had them before on the clio, But these where £30 cheaper each tyre and "apparently" just as good *touch wood*

  LY R26 #288
No, I got them from Cazan Racing, £115 a corner for the 235/40/18. That seems like a bargain price you got them for. They are really good tyres, they seem to be wearing down quiet quickly though lol.

  LY Megane R26
Yeah I couldn't believe it when I see the price, £108 is r.r.p, then I found then for £93 on one site then £83 on there!
I think there a Germany company so I ordered Wednesday around mid day, where posted Thursday and came today.
I didn't bother with 235 as apparently most semi slicks are wider anyway so 225 really is 235.

You couldn't of done a lot of miles to think that ready lol!
Did you go for the street or track ones? 180 or 120 I think it is?

  LY R26 #288
I got the 180 medium compound. I'm quiet surprised how well they grip in the wet tbh. Thought they might be a bit dicey in the wet but nope seem fine so far, better than the budgets that were on the car before lol.

Oh and I do a fair amount of miles, and I like to make quick progress shall we say lol. I'll keep you updated how quickly they wear. Can safely say they've been the best tyres I've had but then I've only had hankooks and kumhos on previous cars so never really had a 'track' tyre before.

Well this weekend my turbo decided to let go!. Hit boost coming off a roundabout on Monday afternoon and I hear a slight bang and lost all power. Managed to limp it home with no boost and the car pissing blue smoke out the exhaust. Instantly assumed the turbo was blown and removal of boost pipes that were soaked in oil confirmed that theory and the nut on the inlet side of the shaft falling off in my mates hand whilst checking for play clenched the deal. It had to come off.

So we set about removing the turbo and what a lovely job it is too!.

Removal consisted of 250 heat shields dotted around the engine bay, the wipers, scuttle panel, various pipes and hoses going to the turbo, drivers side hub, drivers side drive shaft, the cat + downpipe and the subframe :D

Anyway old turbo came off in about five hours with two of us on the case, managed to source a low mileage turbo off Mark Black today and will be starting to put the car back together tomorrow.

Some pics from I snapped whilst removing half the car.

A good read this! I remember doing the hub bearings on my mates.

Bad news with the turbo though, were you not tempted to go for a hybrid?

  LY R26 #288
Yeah it's all back together now. Managed to get a second hand turbo on 47k for 175.

I could of gone hybrid or even put a turbo off a 250 on as they hold the torque longer apparently. But I'm not willing to sacrifice anymore reliability (lol) by pushing it to the max. Stage one might come eventually but at the moment I'm sorting out issues that have been left by the previous owner. Which I should of looked at more closely when buying it.

The brakes need doing all round and the alternator is making a racket where the bearings are shot in it. So that's also on my list.

Class thread, kept me entertained this evening. I had an ultra blue r26, epic car found myself looking in the classifieds quite a lot at them recently. For the performance they are a bargain.

  LY R26 #288
Glad you enjoyed the read, unfortunately the photos are few and far between as when I get stuck into jobs I end up blasting through it and don't end up taking many photos.

did you do the oil pipes to the turbo if not you might risk damaging that turbo. they break for a reason.
also the oil pick up can get blocked too.

  Turbo 182 Alfa 159
Cracking work. Looks stunning.

I can't find any decent LYs for sale so looking for a white one. :(

  LY R26 #288
A white one!? That'll be even harder to find surely lol. Just take your time and check it all over properly.

I love my car but I think I could of found a better one for the money. Still it's gradually coming together.

White does look good though.

Strangely theres about 4-5 white ones for sale at the moment lol.

Whats went wrong with yours so far? Are you enjoying it though?

I know the window regulator must be the most common thing lol.

  LY R26 #288
Funny enough my window regs have been fine for now. If your up for taking the door cards off you can prevent regulator failure anyway. From what I've read it's water getting into the connector block that fries them, apparently you can seal them up and shouldn't have any issues.

I wouldn't say anything has gone wrong really apart from the turbo.

I did the cam belt and aux belt for my own piece of mind because it hadn't been done at a specialist.

Hub bearings were shot when I got it so I done them but I should of spotted that really. The bearings aren't expensive if you can do them yourself.

Tyres all round - again a wear and tear item.

Turbo

Exhaust hangers are a flimsy terrible design and so need replacing quiet often

I need to do the brakes all round, should of been done before I got it really they were an advisory on last years mot.

Alternator is making a racket so I suspect the bearings are shot in it. Will be doing that shortly.

I enjoy the car a hell of a lot. I've done 8k in it since December. I do the mileage and drive it hard.

I can't fault the car. Most of my expense has been due to lack of maintenance before I got it.

When you look at one, check

Hub bearings
Exhaust hangers
Windows working
Funny sounds coming from the dmf when pulling away
Don't buy one with s**t tyres like I did (£115 a corner for the nankangs)
And deffo check the brakes, the oem set up all around on these is not cheap. £200 for front discs!

  LY R26 #288
Been a while since my last update. Fairly substantial one this time. A few jobs that were in desperate need of doing.

First off I wanted to get my injectors cleaned as the car was popping from the exhaust on tickover which is the first sign of injectors requiring a good clean.

Out with the injectors not a bad job at all
14461753435_3fe2286000_z.jpg

Took them to my local ASNU technician for cleaning. £15 per injector. He sent me some pics during the process.

He explained that in the before and after shots you can see the spray isn't as defined thus atomising the fuel better.

Next up a little touch that had been bugging me for a while... the little lever to fold the passenger side Recaro forward was missing so I replaced this with a Honda part.

Next up was to change the alternator. Mine was still working but was making a hideous noise. The bearings were shot and I was able to get an alternator off ebay second hand that had recently been rebuilt. Result. Ckings6056 inspecting the old alternator lol...

Another small update

After getting most of the things that needed doing done on the Meg, I finally decided to use my RStuner to stage 1 the Meg, After purchasing an unlock code and the map from Henk I waited a couple of days and then loaded up the new map. It has made an incredible difference to the car. As everyone else says, they should of come out of the factory like it!. It was pretty much on par with my old 182, if not slightly quicker as standard but now it feels like it pulls much harder. I will be getting it dyno'd soon to check AFR and power output just to be on the safe side.

Also received a new bush for the steering rack from Track Focus Direct on RSMegane, which is a common failure on Megane racks. I have a slight knocking noise when changing direction on the steering wheel at low speeds, hopefully this will solve it. Will also check the rack bolts are tight as they have been known to loosen off apparently. I will try and get round to fitting this sometime this week.

Next up an old pal of mine has got well into the detailing scene, and back when I first bought the car he said its one of his favourite colours and would like to go over it, so how could I possibly say no. Anyway I took it over to him on Saturday morning and he did what he could with the time he had. I didn't take photos of every step and they are only crappy iphone pics. The tar and contamination that came off the car was unreal.

The pics don't do it justice at all but he really did a fantastic job, I've never seen the car so clean and shiny and he managed to get rid of some of the small scratches on the car. All in all I was over the moon with the job he'd done. The flake in the paint now pops out so much and just looks amazing.

My next job apart from the steering rack bush is to fit a back box chop exhaust that I managed to pick up off someone on the Meg forums. A lot of Meg owners go down this route to give the exhaust a little extra noise as its pretty quiet as standard. A back box chop should amplify the jet sound you get on boost.

Does it pull much better then ?

Yeah it pulls very well. I'd say it pulls harder in 4th now than it did in 3rd before that's how different it is!

I haven't really pushed it much yet as it's been a busy weekend but when I have it's pretty damn wicked. Be interesting to see how it compares to the 182 now. Although the 182 always seems quicker from a standstill it's a nightmare launching a turbo car!

My mate loves any colour for the right price haha.

  LY R26 #288
Yeah I'm up for that. I don't know mate I reckon yours will get off the mark quicker. I find it very difficult to launch and get the power down in first gear.

Back box chop...
Have been wanting to do this for a while. I quiet like the sound of the standard exhaust (jet sound on boost) it was just a tad too quiet. So I snapped up a back box that had already been chopped, off of a member on the Megane forum who reverted back to standard.

Old one off. Could hear all the rusty s**te rattling around inside when you shook it.

IMG_1616 by JoeRS182, on Flickr

The sound is spot on now IMO. Little burble on idle and the jet sound on boost has increased quiet dramatically. Sounds friggin awesome!. Seems a bit pikey but this has been done by many members over on the Meg forum and I gotta say from watching YouTube videos I'm not all that keen on the sound of the aftermarket systems. Maybe hearing one in real life will change my mind.

Steering rack bush..
Replaced the plastic bush inside the steering rack which seems to be a common issue on the Megane, mine wasn't too bad when I took it off mind.

Passenger side Inner tie rod removed, old bush out and new bush slots back in over the rack arm. Bit fiddly but goes in eventually.

Gear knob...
This has been something that's been bugging me since the day I bought the car (OCD). The earlier 225/R26 gear knob inserts were simply painted and wore off horribly. One of the only bits of interior showing major wear in my car. So I ordered one from Ads @ Renault Wolverhampton and replaced it. The newer style is much nicer looking and shouldn't wear!. The price was insane :headno: but I had to do it!.

New one..

Next up I think I'm gonna need some new front tyres soon. 4 months/7k miles has nearly killed the tires I put on last. Too much fun! :race:

Great work done by yourself. Shame I would never have knowledge to do all of it...

Glad the back box chop worked out well and sounds good. Theres a decent exhaust place near me that ill go speak to...

Keep up th good work as yours was abit of inspiration for me to get my 2nd one!

You do love a good blast! lol

Car looks great mate! Dare i ask how much the knob cost?

I certainly do!. That's why my car spends most of its time dirty rather than clean. Its driven! haha. The gear knob was £70 inc delivery from Renault. Disgusting! lol.

Glad I could be a bit of inspiration to someone! haha. Back box chop is spot on, and from what I've read most custom exhaust places will do it for £50-£100. Well worth it.

I take it they just cut the back box out for a straight pipe ?

Alan

That's correct mate.

That's correct Alan.

How is the steering now you have replaced that bush

Gotta be honest, I can't feel much difference. I've got a knocking noise coming from somewhere on the steering. Thought it might be that bush but it hasn't solved it. I can't feel any play on either front wheel either. Its a mystery.

Just curious also what noise you mean coming from the DMF? Theres I think the self test of the ABS when first pulling away buy then a small like rattle sort of sound from the front as i continue to pull away...

Might just be because its French but...

Thanks

Yeah ABS self tests on first pull off. DMF makes a humming/groaning noise on pull off if its passed its best.

Cheers Tim. What are the chances of seeing other southern members up at the evo triangle! Done a little over 2k miles in 5 days and the r26 has performed superbly! Hope you boys had a good time on the remainder of your trip.
