Nice ph1's, worth tucking away for a few years?

I have a really nice ph1, bought from r sports cars, on 72k, iceberg. I'm looking to get a new car in the spring, something bigger as I have a family,and with values as they I'll get 2k max I'd imagine if I come to sell it. I have access to my parents garage where I could potentially put it for as long as I need. The idea seems good, use it as a toy at weekends etc or for a blast, maybe 10 years down the line it will be quite a rare and sought after car and worth more? I really like the car, would be sad to see it go, and I like the idea of having it stored safely as a toy, maybe even pass it down to my youngest son when he can drive. Does anybody else have something old and interesting tucked away in their garage? My dads neighbour has a mk1 golf gti in his he has owned from new with 30k on the clock, it's stunning and mint, he's 65 iirc, I'm hoping to buy it off him one day.

If you can afford it putting it away as a weekend/summer car rather than running into the ground or selling then do so just to have something fun and cheap to drive but don't expect any massive return. It's a reno and they do not seem to have kind of following that values these cars in the same way as Ford of VW. An example being the 5GTT, similar aged ford and VW go for silly sums whilst the 5 (Though prices have gone up recently simply because they are all falling to bits and are now rare) can still be bought for a couple of grand. several have sold this year for good money, 10k+ but they were mint OE examples with 15k on the clock, as good as undriven.

I think you'll have to wait a very long time before you see any return even though it's a great car. You may see some increase but on balance it's not worth the wait.

There are very few cars that realise a higher value. I have an AE86 which is in excellent condition for it's age. I will be storing that in a carcoon once the engine rebuild is done as that is a car that will appreciate, particularly so as it's nearing it's 30th birthday. I am expecting to store it for the next three years and then will see what to do with it.

I would love to think so, but i think there were far too many made for that, low mileage examples seem to pop up all the time from people that bought them from way-ward salesman telling them a 172 was 'exactly' what they needed...

Personally I don't think it will ever be worth vastly more...but I'm confident it won't lose any money.

In ten years time I reckon that would be worth more definitely, a good example of any 80's hot hatch seem to fetch upwards of £3k.

I think I'm gonna do similar with my PH1, not in the hope of it being worth more money but just because it's worth more to me than selling would bring.

Danny boy, there were s**t loads of XR3's and 205 gti's sold in the 80s too, and look at those heaps fetching decent wedge now!

Just under 1300 were officially sold through Renault dealers in the UK. The rest from car Supermarkets so their pretty rare to start with.

Rare they will be, valuable, all depends on demand

In ten years of sitting around doing nothing it'll need new tyres, belts, blah blah blah... it'll cost a fortune to get back on the road - that's assuming everything that should move still does (suspension etc) and things that shouldn't still don't move.

The thing is I'm tempted to sell it for something older to use as a toy, I'm looking at possibly a 205 1.9 gti, fiesta xr2, fiesta rs turbo, so spmething that already pretty rare and desirable, which would only be a weekend toy, and would be looking to spend around £3500 on a really nice one.

lol true. You'd get a bit more for it mind like decent Williams but you'd have to wait longer than 10 years for it to be worth holding on to.

Just keep the car in good condition and use it. If you can store it in a garage then that will protect the car from the winter etc. If its left sat around for a long time you will have issues with discs rusting etc. I can't see the Ph1 Clio ever reaching big values but they should hold their own if the car is in nice condition.

Personally I'd just keep it in good condition an enjoy it, maybe put it away for winter if you have another motor but I think the fact the clio is so useable makes it the car it is.

You have to compare it to a valver IMHO if looking to see what it will be like in 10 years time for value.

Ie, not worth it.

A trophy maybe, a ph1 or ph2 or cup not going to happen in terms of making any real gains in value (ie above what savings would) IMHO

At the end of the day a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I would say if your only going to do it for 10 years then i would not really bother, 30 years then maybe.Also 72,000 miles might be too much aswell. Some one I used to talk to had a 172 ph1 in silver and all original condiction with 24k miles on the clock, thing is tho he has been in aussy for the last 4 years while his car is in storage.

SO when he gets back it will need a few new parts like belts and what not but otherwise, there is not a dink or knock in it.


And like it has already been said, sell the car and put that money in a cash ISA, you'll more than likely make more money back.

Thats because the Valver was never a class leader. Williams was always the one to have.

I would even say that to get a return on a Trophy would be hard as they are getting cheaper and cheaper so a PH1 might be very hard.
I sometimes question keeping the RS Turbo and think about selling it but then i look at the return i might get in years to come. Its 22 years old now and it creeps up in price each year from the agree'd valuation.

If i never had a huge amount of out goings and took a job with a lower pay the Trophy would be in with the RS Turbo also and it would be put away with it all wrapped up and i would buy a cheap PH1 just to use as the everyday dog but funds wont allow it just now. Saying that the trophy sits outside my house 6 days a week as i have a work van so at least the mileage is staying off it.

Not worth it, like chip said its not the most desirable Clio of the range so won't be appreciating like you think. Also has too many miles, I'd say one under 40k would have more of a chance.

Wont make you a millionaire, but with so many being modified/raced/broken and prices low at the moment i would think a standardish phase 1 will appreciate price wise over the years.

I rekon it would hold a bit value to someone wanting one, not as much as a limited run one, i.e trophy/williams. As id say williams prices are on the up for a good one these days.
