No history and on 74k, how can i be sure of belts?

  Titanium FF 182 CUP
Another newbie here, i recently purchased an 04 reg 182 FF Cup, i admit i bought the car in haste off a close friend but it is now apparent theres nothing in the history to prove a belt and dephaser change :-(. He assures me its been done but he only owned it a short time, no noises from dephaser but is it something that a specialists eye could tell the age of or am i going to have to bite the bullet and get them done. The fact it just clocked onto 74k right on the limit for a belt is worrying me slightly now. advice greatly appreciated

Okay so having thought about this alot i set about finding history on my car. I know have the service book which is showing a main dealer service and timing belt change at 39,200 miles in 2011. So when would it be next due if thats correct?

Thats what i got quoted today from nearest specialost on here. Thats for cambelt aux dephaser waterpump and rocker seal tho

Thomas- i know its a ff so both cup packs not cup.

Cheaper option is without waterpump etc but sensible to do it all whilst in there and accessible

I think i will leave out the dephaser as it silent. The waterpump im unsure of tho....ony old astra the bearing went in waterpump then boom off came the belt and destroyed the engine big time. Now rather weary of pumps lol

I would be scared to even drive it with 74,000 miles on the clock and no proper evidence of a belt change from a specialist. That is literally a ticking time bomb.. The debate about a water pump will be the last of your worries believe me.

Get it sorted ASAP! Dan @ SJM is pretty local to you, £600 for the belts and dephaser with an oil change. Done!

Damn! That's expensive. Why so much? I have been quoted a couple of hundred pounds cheaper from a specialist next year when my cambelt, dephaser etc is due a change. Have you had a quote from renault?

The misses old 182 we paid little over £400 for genuine Renault cam belt and aux belt kit with dephaser FITTED

Was a few years back but now it seems it's probably cheaper to just replace the engine than a freaking cam belt!

As i said i have found documented history of a belt change now, was done at renault main dealer and at 39,000 miles and only 18 mnths-2 years ago. I believe in specialists being worth there weight in gold for some things in particular....But...(know im opening up a huge debate now) are you telling me every single clio sport that has not been to this handful of people in the country for its cambelt change has been down on power blown up mis timed etc? If that was soo there would only be a limited number left in use. Im not saying specialists aint worth there money but theres gotta be more economical and substantial options available.

I've had 3 in from a garage down in Plymouth now. Each and every single one has had the crank timing out massively. One was actually rolling roaded at 150bhp. I corrected it and it made 185.

I'm sure plenty that have been done are fine, but at the same time I'd bet there's just as many that aren't.

To put your mind at ease, it might be worth getting the timing checked. I'm not sure on costs, but I don't think it's a massive job so it shouldn't be too expensive.

Wouldn't bother with the timing belt but your aux belt is due at 75k. Could get the timing checked then as well for peace of mind.
