Morning guys.

After many years I'm back in a clio 172. After selling our weekend summer toy mx5 due to the birth of our 1st child I wanted to replace it with something that has 4 seats and a bit of fun

So a 172 was in the search category.

I worked as a technician for renault for many years when I left school and at the time had a clio 2 ph1 in Monaco blue

I then had a 172 cup a few years later and loved it so the search began

Last week we collected a titanium silver ph1 with a few Mods already done. And a few Mods that will be being removed

Anyways here's a few pics of my apprentice days ride 😂

And now the new ph1

It's already lowered on kW coilovers
Top half of the dash is flocked
Speedline 2118s wrapped in yokohamas
182 manifold
182 ported inlet apparently
Remapped to 185bhp with proof
Poly bushed engine and dog one mounts
Brembo front pads and drilled Grove discs
Brembo rear pads
Original oz f1 spare wheel

New front bumper is on its way as that splitter (made from the finest mdf around) has been screwed to it

Exhaust will be being replaced as it drones far too much

Center dash vents have been replaced as they were smashed

New bumper, bonnet, exhaust and a good tidy up then enjoy it really

So if anyone's after a ph1 front bumper it will be coming off next week
Does have screw holes all over it but I don't want anything for it

So
Clio 1 Adam 0
Went to replace the passenger handbrake cable this dinner
Came off the caliper fine and out of the clip where you tighten it up fine
Went to tighten it up and the dam nut is siezed solid, 🤦🏻‍♂️
Appears the intermediate cable that goes to the lever is also twisting

Started on the list of jobs today by replacing the god awful backbox and DIY hanger to replace it with something much quieter. Also added some poly bushed mounts as the old ones were dead

Removed the mdf splitter someone had made (that wasn't straight) may I add
And fitted the replacement bumper without all the screw holes

It needs paint but it's 100 times better than the one on it
When I source a bonnet I'll get it in for paint

Also fitted a skoda fabia splitter

Have you had a nosey behind the filler neck yet? And inside the rear quarters - for rust?

Worth a look if you're going to be doing some body work etc. Ph1 172 front end looks so much better than the ph2's. I still remember these coming out in 2000! Think the front end still looks good all these years on.

Yea inside the rear quarters is fine
I going to be taking the skirts off and inner panels and having a nosey when I get a spare hour or so

So after having a spare hour or so last night i was under it giving it a good prod for rust, The passenger rear outer sill requires welding. Ill be taking it to my friends place on sat and taking the side skirt off to let him have a look

Another job to ad to the long list

tbh call that a result if that's all it needs, they are after all all 20 odd year old French tin cans now and only got to look at some of the other recent phase 1 project threads to see the horror stories! lol!

Yea to be honest we was expecting some kind of welding needing to be done somewhere along the line due to its age. I work at my mates place every now and then doing mots so ill be getting it at staff rate which is a great help i guess

Ill be sure to get some pictures when i take the side skirt off

That’s by far the worst I’ve seen. Glad you’re sorting it and keeping another ph1 on the road.

Also noticed that there is no air filter in the housing. The more we find on this car the more and more nothing surprises me

It's like they have spend good money on the areas that were less important to general maintenance 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Then after having it running the fuel pipe decided it wanted to leak fuel to the rail

Cut the end off and managed to repair it so I could get home.
New one being sourced

Great progress, the tensioner setting on the old belt was completely wrong 🤣.

Did you replaced the aux belt kit or has it recently had one?

Mate the more I find that's been bodged the less surprised I am getting to be honest
Timing was half a tooth out aswell

The aux belt has been replaced just before I got the car about 4 weeks ago along with the alternator

To be fair my mate at renault who's master tech did it. He's had 172s for years and megane sports

Regarding the air filter
Nothing surprises me anymore with it. Clearly a bit of a lemon but I'll be getting everything put right

Yea I don't see the point of doing something as a half hearted effort

Im looking forward to having it roadworthy and using it now
