Performance car mag - it's back! Williams V's 197 cup

I picked up issue one last night, I couldn't believe my eyes tbh - this was the mag that I used to buy every month back in the mid 90's:cool:

Main feature - Clio 197 cup V's Clio Williams :)

They said that they were testing the 197 cup against williams one - I thought 'yeah right' likely. They are !! Williams 0001 (which is lhd) against a white 57 reg cup.

Not read all of the article yet, but it's good so far :approve:

(sorry if this is a repost)

and what's the verdict? After having time in an R27 I'd have to say for me it's the better car, handling seems even better and more user friendly and forgiving than the Williams, just didn't feel as quick. Overall it's quicker, but then it should be, it's 15 years younger lol

  Clio 182 Trophy
I've just bought a 182 Trophy from Gravells. The dealer told me that 182 trophy is quicker than the 197? Is this true or does it all depend on the driver?

the guy trying to sell the car to you told you that? fancy that ;)

it might be marginally quicker in a straight line, but A-B or round a track I'd be beting against the Trophy tbh, the 197's seem on a different level as regards grip and handling.

its billed as "could this be the best hot hatch ever" - a heading which seems to follow every clio sport since the Pug 205 and Golf GTI!
I bought it from smiths today at lunch - the version is fully spec'd with spoiler and recaros, looks really nice.

I watched a clip of the Clio 197 vs Corsa VXR on fifth gear online the other day round the track - great to see the corsa got thrashed.

Stromba is going to commit suicide when he sees that they are driving 0001.

I'd better grab a copy of the mag later.

I've just grabbed a copy on the way back home (lift off the old man as I'm car less). Very impressive on first squint. Very much like Evo before the face lift. I'm even more excited about getting the Cup now.

Picked up a copy this evening and had a quick flick through, seems quite similar to what EVO used to be like in it's infancy. As said some stunning photos, and also not masses of advertising which i think is good. I'll be reading the longterm report of the Integra with interest having made a similar change a few weeks ago, albeit from a 182. Imho looks like a good magazine.

Just picked this up.
seems like a quality read.
Was my first real look @ a Clio 197 Cup, not so sure on its spoiler...

Oh will get this out of interset even though I already drive 'The best hot hatch EVER'

  White 197
I picked up the last copy in our local garage yesterday. It really is a very good quality magazine. The photography is good and even little things like the weight of the paper makes it quite special at a time when magazines such as Auto Car appear to be cheapening.

You bought a Trophy?

You will look back on this one day and realise what you said is wrong the 197 cup is a better car!

No offence mate, but your not exactly impartial! The 197 is more capable, but not more entertaining. Even the Renaultsport said that it's unfair to compare the 197 to the Trophy, it was a run-out model made using exotic suspension. 197 best hot hatch ever? How? I'd easily put the 205 gti and the Trophy above.

Before handaling even comes into it you have to consider how much the 197's are. For the pricing they adopted the car should be 20% better as standard anyway.

The best hatch comment was a slice of humour, who am I to comment on the best hot hatch ever.
But as for the Renaultsport comparision, seeing I have owned 4 including a 172 cup and a trophy, I think I have a right to an opinion on which car I think is superior.

LMAO :D

Although, Stromba knew 0001 was being used by people of the Automobile press a few months back now :rasp: . He was not a happy man.

Tbh he could have bought it himself when it was auctioned off (or bought it when it was sold on again) I guess it sold for a fair whack though ?

If he'd have bought it he could have wrapped it in cotton wool :rasp:

(I was going to write naughty stuff, but i'll leave that to your imagination)

It was sold as part of a collection first. The guy who bought the collection then sold it back to Renault as he only wanted the F1 stuff. It wasn't really as expensive as you would think. Well, not close to what Rob values 0002 at, but still a hell of a lot more than any other Williams you see up for sale.

Anyway, back to the article. I'm really pleased to see the Williams being used in such a way. I get far more enjoyment from reading an article like that one, then seeing it sat on display somewhere. Cars are to be driven.
