Ph1 172 itb'd on std ECU, page 13 on

Very interested in this. Looks like a great piece of work and a huge accomplishment to all involved.

I appreciate that its early days, but will you be looking to offer this kit for sale when all the development work has been completed ?

Cracking work, proves you don't have to spend massive money to something different and worthwhile.

I like the way you've kept the faith doing this to a (130k?) engine too!

Excellent work Russ and Paul... for years I was (badly) informed by *** and co that there was simply no way on earth that the standard ECU was capable of running bodies. Nice to see it proven otherwise, as this will now prove a very cost effective mod. Between this and JMS' manifold it's going to seriously cut into these companies flogging over priced ITB kits and the like :)
Makes me want to buy another 172 to put bodies on!

Again, very well done guys!

For less than a grand? Including the mapping?

Yes mate, though I got a few good deals, im confident its do-able for around that price.

looks really good fella, fair play on the work done. bang for buck is epic.

Thanks mate, I couldnt get any more power for any less :)

It is something that has been considered mate, watch this space :)

Sounds like a plan to me! :approve:

Excellent results, shows mileage isn't an issue for getting good results on these engines.

I think the main thing is if its looked after they will last :)

Good work!

Cheers matey :approve:

Ha lol yeah it has been funny mate, still ok for me to pop up at the weekend? You can take it for a spin :)

135k :) As said, I think as long as an engine is looked after, it doesnt matter about miles, shows they still make the power :)

what have you done with the idle control valve mate? just left unplugged? nice work btw

Yes mate, I need to tidy the wiring up still lol

Thanks matey, I too was told it couldnt be done, but once we had sat down and really thought about it, we thought it was well worth the gamble! I think Paul had a blast mapping it too, bearing in mind that was its first session, Im getting a different filter, new exhaust and tidying a few bits up then im popping back up to see Paul, and hopefully make it even better :)

I just cant get over how nicely it drives, the obligitory(sp?) noise and speedo vids will be up in due course :)

Oh and if anyone wants to have a look just let me know, local meet soon?

Come East a bit and I'll be there!!!

Looks like great work, depending upon the price of the JMS item that is to come, I may be going down this route myself, you and Daniel can come stay at "cassa de rob" and help me out one weekend ;)

Brilliant work mate and a smashing result, I imagin with a different filter, exhaust and a hefty decat you could even maybe reach that magic figure...

Look forward to vids :D

Good intelligent development work. The standard management is more than capable - it's just making the parts fitted work with it and acessing it for mapping. Once you've overcome those two hurdles your well on your way :)

Knowing the Jenvey prices and all the other bits and bobs you've had done by mates I'd be suprised if this is under a 1.5 - 1.7k build for a walk in customer, especially if you add fitting & mapping into the equation.

Very true Tom, im very impressed with the flexibilty of the ECU :)

On the money side, I managed to do it cheap, but buying new i would imagine you would be right, buying 2nd hand itb's would make it considerably cheaper and probably a more viable option, sorry I should have stated that in my original post, though even at £1500 its worth it for the noise alone lol :)

It also depends on what bodies you buy, as me I went DCOE so I needed the adaptors etc, so price will vary, still gives a good option to the usual kits that are for sale :)

Mine is just about to roll over to 100,000 miles.... and it has never felt quicker!! :approve:

Agreed, putting 500 miles a week on mine and its feeling looser every week!

Excellent results, reckon I could hide this from the o/h as well.

Edit:

One thing I forgot to say, is due to using the standard ECU, it means there are no dash lights on, the standard dash computer works, and it will look very 'factory' rather than aftermarket (Once iv finished it lol)

Russ, this is outstanding, I really can not say any more then that! The amount of work you and your helping hands have obviously put into all of this and getting the figures you achieved, I could not imagine you with out a grin extending from ear to ear.

Looking forward to seeing any more updates you bring to this kit, it is truly inspiring.

Thanks Darren thats really kind of you to say so :)

It was great to get such high figures on Pauls rollers, as Pauls are classsed as very accurate, im sure on other rollers it would get even higher figures, not that that bothers me :)

Its the torque thats the best thing, over 150lb ft from just over 4000 revs all the way up to approx 6700, it pulls as hard at 4000 as it does at 6000 lol, its a joy to drive :)

Praise where its due Russ in this case! That torque curve compared to standard is extremely impressive. I could only imagine how much better it feels now.. I wished I could afford ITB's! lol.. Savings start.. NOW!

Keep up the good work fella :approve:

Not sure yet mate, I had Ktecs filter, but it kept slipping down the trumpets and loosing a load of power, so im going to look at either fixing it still some how and see if it effects power, or looking at another sausage filter i expect matey

lol yeah true, it was loosing a good 10 bhp, so need to sort that out, though iv wedged in back on as temp measure and iv wedged it in a way so it doesnt get sucked in, so that will do till iv had a re think

well done!

really good result and nice to see this being done on a standard ecu.

opens up a lot of options for people wanting this without having to spend a few grand.
