Private plates – what's peoples' view?

  Renault ChaVio
I'm thinking about sticking a non standard issue plate on my V6 and in the most unimaginitive way I thought I could get one that starts with V6 ___. :)

These little suckers are about £400 for a 5 digit format. The letters that relate closest to my initials are not available but I could get the first three letters of my surname V6 COY or go for V6 OAC with my initials being AC. I quite like the thought of having a shorter number of digits on my plate and getting the plate cut shorter to exaggerate the width of the Vee. Am I just being a w*nker and wasting money or is it something that is worthwhile? :?

Trouble with getting one related to the car is that it will be meaningless to you when you come to sell the car.
I had a CUP plate when i had my 172 but sold it with the car and i have one that is more personal to me now.

If you are going to have the car a while then why not get it?

You could probably sell it on for similar money minus the transfer fee when you sell the car.

I have T8 _ _ _ (my initials) on one of my cars, £250 all in from the DVLA site. for that cost I recon it's worth it as I can transfer when I change cars. V6 _ _ _ would look good I recon at the right price & you can transfer to any other car with out it looking out of place although on the V6 it will look mint :D

I have K2RL N. The wifey bought it as a chrimbo pressie a couple of years ago. It was a £250 jobbie from DVLA. I think if you can find something you like go for it. BUT, be aware that when it comes to selling your car and want to keep the plate, then it can be a royal pain in the arse.

do think they make a car look a little bit better depends what it says tho best one i have seen is k33p up tho that looked the nuts

Private plate? Go for it! tho I would have your intials or omething personal to you! or best of both worlds... V6 _ _ _ & your intitals! so if you carry it on... its still your names on it!

been through THREE cars with the same private plate, never had a problem swapping them.

  172 cup TT
mines "w* cup", its great but i stand out like a sore thumb to everyone... friend at work was having ameeting with the old bill and the copper mentioned my damn plate in conversation in an example of "modded cars" in stevenage... my colleague kept quiet

Get a personalised one to yourself, but I'd never get ** CUP one or V6 ** relating to the type of car. I got N13 LY* for £250.

I'm not keen on plates relating to the car, I just think what's the point? A clio V6 is so obviously a V6, you don't need a plate to tell people. Had to giggle to myself the other day, saw a BMW 325i, with the plate V6 ***, muppet doesn't realise he doesn't have a V6!

  Trophy 265/500
I had a car specific plate on my last car: a C2 GT with the plate C2 GTU. Straight from the DVLA, more than made my money back when I traded in.

Plate on the Trophy refers to one of my hobbies and my other half got it me as an early Christmas prezzie.

I think that plates you have to misrepresent are a bit shabby, and non standard fonts (which the plod can pull you for) look a bit chav-y, but if you like a plate, go for it. Most plates on the DVLA that don't correspond very closely to a car or name are very affordable. The cost of a plate compared to the car is next to nothing...

i have one, i bought it to hide the age of the car in a way... i bought J** WMS for my williams. someone said above that a car specific plate is meaningless when u sell the car.... i agree, however priv plates can be so chp now and i think that a car specific plate can really finish a car off, trouble is finding a good one. when i see a car going past with A93 JWH etc i think thats s**t, but if i saw a car go past with C110 VG id think nice plate mate..... i bought mine for 250 so i aint arsed whether i get that 250 back or not...... so i spose it depends on how much it costs and how gd the plate is.... happy hunting

  Megane Mk4
I'm planning on buying one at christmas.. Aint planning on getting rid of the car yet for a while so it'll suit the car, but hopefully when it comes to sell it I'm hoping to transfer it. But we'll see ;)

Some do look a bit kack on the cars they're on, but its a fun thing, should it matter? ;)

I have TUR80 3W haven't got a turbo though :(

That reminded me of a plate that was up for auction, TUR 80S, Sold for 13/14k a few years back.
Also, I think private plates can be quite interesting when you find what you can make up, it gets even more interesting when you find what some are worth!

  1996 Valver
I got M18PSB on the car, Originally cos it was my 18th bday and psb my enitials but also a 1.8 engine,
and M400PSB on the bike, 400cc + psb as above.....£250 each.

if youm want to buy defo get it straight from dvla, all other sites/adverts in paper are scams, they don't even own half the one they sell! if u buy one from these ppl they buy them from dvla, boost up price and sell to u!

Go for it mate. I got my V6 four weeks ago, first thing I did was change my plate. Looked on DVLA site and found V6 GUD. Looks GOOD and gets a few smiles as you drive past.
