Rob's Supercharged Trophy

I'm removing the gearbox sometime next week, but so far pretty much everyone agrees it sounds like the diff is whining like crazy. Almost sounds like my mates straight cut gearbox in his Mini... Either way whoever I take it to I'd like them to strip down the box for further inspection.

I'm tempted by the 'M Factory' LSD as it offers a fairly good saving over a Quaife. But doesn't look like anyone has fitted one yet to a Clio so reviews are a little thin on the ground!

In regards to the LSD installation 'crown wheel needs machining as part of the installation / setup' Is that all that's needed? My knowledge of gearboxes is minimal and all i know its a box full of gears and magic happens! 😂 Would it be something any self respecting gearbox specialist can do?
I sent my crown wheel to Quaife when I ordered and they sorted and machined it for me :)

Have a word with @NorthloopCup - he'll sort you out :)

Gearbox out! Only a rebuild and a quaife away! [emoji6]

MINI UPDATE:

Gearbox is out and the cause of my horrid noises were shagged main shaft bearings! So whilst that's getting rebuilt it would be rude not to renew and upgrade a few items!

Courtesy of @NorthloopCup the box will be treated with a lovely new Quaife, and a lightened flywheel. Along with a Sachs Racing organic clutch kit.

While I'm at it I'm removing the old suspension setup, and opting for the praised Bilstein B14 coilover's as I'd like a bit of ride height adjustment as the arch gap is horrendous with the 2118's fitted. At the same time I'm going to fit Pure Motorsport's solid top mounts, and strut brace package.

Whilst I have access the steering rack mounts will be renewed with some Powerflex items.

Lastly I will be replacing the exhaust... Strictly not needed but I fancy a change and something a little quieter. So the Ktec system will be going and replaced in favour for Pure Motorsport's decat system.

So up for sale soon once they're all removed will be...

Ktec Ultra Performance exhaust system (supersport version) with a 2.5" silenced decat and even a set of the DIY Poweflex rear exhaust mounts!

Complete Suspension setup which consists of...

Front: Pair of Sachs Trophy shock absorbers which have been rebuilt by BG Motorsport (I cant remember the date, but will dig through my invoices)
Rear: Pair of Bilstein B14 dampers (I bought the Trophy like this as I was told the rears were beyond repair)
Coil springs: Eibach Sportline

The Sachs are in good usable condition with no leaks although they are suffering with a fair bit of surface corrosion. I will get photos up of everything and create a for sale thread once removed.

Exciting times!

Lol @ "mini update"

Mini update.... I'm replacing half the parts on my car [emoji14]
Cracking plans! Like it. [emoji106] Few quid spent there again.
Gonna be a brilliant car when finished bud

Haha! 😂

That's a fair point mate!

Thank you! She's a keeper so in my eyes worth spending a fair bit on.

Are you going to Blyton again this year bud? Although minus a Clio would be great to finally catch up with you in person!

Ha ha. It made me lol when I read it. I thought a gearbox build is hardly "mini"..... Then suspension, exhaust, top mounts etc as well . Pmsl [emoji23]

I probably will, should really get it booked. Worth the trip.
Would be great to have a chat and a nosey at the car. I assume your tracking? If so I wouldn't mind a ride [emoji41]

That offer goes for anyone. Your all welcome!

Nice 'mini' update, Rob :)
Good call on the LSD and clutch; I think it's the sensible thing to do whilst it's apart and being rebuilt.

I'll bring my helmet along to Blyton as well and jump in for a few laps if there's a chance (and assuming I can still make Blyton!)

I bet it did! I'm sure she'll be a lot happier once you've fully explained and demonstrated the benefits to her... :)

Very kind, thanks!
This, er, "Trophy Godfather" thing... is that a polite way of saying I'm old?! LOL! Either way, it's absolutely correct! Joking aside, I'm looking forward to seeing your T either at Blyton or elsewhere.

Yeah I'm sure she will completely agree! 😂

No mate nothing to do with your age. Just When it comes to Trophy ownership/modifying pitfalls there's not much you haven't experienced, good and bad!

Jokes aside bud I hope you do come, as it would be great to finally meet you and hopefully your T!

Rob, what made you decide B14's over any other? Just out of curiosity?

Also, have you ordered them yet? If not, I presume your getting them from the German site?
Well mainly because they've been given such glowing reviews from most of you guys on the forum, and give a good balance for road and track use. Although granted might be a little too soft for hardcore track users!

I may end up regretting my choice and want something a bit more focused, but we shall see! The AST's are supposed to the be the nuts, but with all my other expenses I couldn't really stretch too them.

Regarding where I purchased them from. I used to work for Euro Car Parts and still have plenty of contacts, and managed to get a bloody good deal!

Once the Trophy is back on the road, and I've gotten a few more track days under my belt, I will probably put together an honest little review.

Nice update Rob

What are your thoughts behind the lightened flywheel? I recall most people on CS saying there are as many pros as cons but maybe you'll benefit more being supercharged??

The lightened flywheel in my R26 is a great upgrade but the dual mass is much heavier to start off with.

Yeah many have said they are a great road coilover and OK for track work, but some do say there too soft, which you mentioned. End of the day mate, you can always sell them on here and theyll sell quickly being 60mm fitment, if you don't get on with them.

I know what you mean about the gap with 15" wheels though.

Also a no brainer when you can get a decent discount on them.

This evenings event!

Fitted the Bilstein's to the rear, and got the Pure Motorsport exhaust system loosely fitted. I'm really impressed with the quality and design of it. Such a well put together, piece of kit! I'm itching to hear it! [emoji1]

Next on the to do list...

Fit the Bilstein's to the front along with the Pure Motorsport top mounts and strut brace.

Renew the steering rack bushes with the powerflex items.

Once the freshly built Quaife/gearbox is back fit that up along with the lightened flywheel and Sachs Racing clutch. At the same time renew the main oil seal whilst its accessible. Might also replace the clutch cable for the same reason.

Watch this space!

I love the look of the PMS exhaust. Can you get more pics please rob? More of the back end/tailpipes.
Yes of course mate. Next time I'm working on the car, I'll get some more photos for you.

The only thing I was worried about was the tailpipe choices. As the thin slash cut IMO should be on Jap only, and the outwardly rolled is strictly old skool Ford. In the metal however I'm pleased with how the outwardly rolled looks.

You say that now, but I know of a few people on here that did it for piece of mind only for it to leak after the new one was put in.
Apparently there is a special tool that Renault use to put them in, so if you can get hold of one of those I'd maybe go down that route...

Oh really? Cheers Jon!

That's good information to know. I'll certainly look into it.

The issue is that people knock them in so they're level with the block face - which is actually on the piss!
They are awkward, but not impossible to do without a leak afterwards.
Oh really? How do they need to sit Mark? Or is it a case of tapping them in until it finds its natural position?

Cannot wait to get everything back together, and get back behind the wheel!

Massive thanks to @NorthloopCup for sorting both the Quaife, and the TTV lightened flywheel. Great communication through the whole process, and I would recommend him to anyone after something transmission related, lol!
