Runabout ideas - valver ?

  Chocolate Bar™
been considering getting a cheap runabout whilst i do my car up over the winter, so just looking for possible ideas.

the budget is really a grand, but wanted to spend 400 lol

i've been looking at a valver / rover 400 / 106 rallye / 5dr punto

pros and cons to all of them, but dont really fancy a massive car like a vectra/omega/lagunna so they're all out. would really only have it for a year max, but may keep both cars if i really like it and it works out well from a reliability point of view.

ideas please :)

if anyone is considering selling their car for a grandish then that'd be cool as well

good suggestion. nice one on pistonheads at 2k so a bit overbudget, but could probably find one for my price.

  Chocolate Bar™
had a punto before and liked it for what it was. also know what im looking for. looking at the 5dr as its less desireable than the 3dr and most arent owned by boy racers.

looked at the 306 TD's but dont know that much about them yet.

ali - would have offered to buy your williams but your obviously not a fan lol

Mk1 Golfs don't like the winter lol ...both my Mk1 Golf and valver a tucked up under covers :p

I can sell you this one ;)

For £400 i'd just get a corsa or something & use that for a bit, any £400 valver will be a total bag of nails.

  Chocolate Bar™
if i did get a valver it'd be more around the grand mark, but i think i'm just gonna get a trusty diesel witha round 100k on it of some sort just to get me through the winter

  Chocolate Bar™
whats the performance/petrol consumption like with them? i assume they're pretty pokey

Wouldn't get a valver mate unless your good with the spanners.... Every other day. Be prepared to phone up GSF a lot aswell.

Have you thought about a 1.9 D MK1 Clio, pure workhorse and will do lots of MPG, you'd be amazed how much cash you'll save on fuel. Cons - Will lower your street cred and any hopes of promotion, and you can't pull in a oil burner

  Chocolate Bar™
^ lmao i'm looking at seicento sportings, cant lower street cred more than that! I'm gonna go to an auction i think with a grand and see what i can get

Rover 25 etc small car than a 400 etc so cheaper on fuel
Or a Corsa/Nova diesel no t much go realy (although corsa TD can have about 100hp with £10 or parts on them) but there cheap to run parts are common etc.

167bhp, around 7.5 - 8 secs. to 60, does around 30mpg maybe a mile or two less? It's the same chassis, suspension set up and engine, apart from gearbox as the 306 GTi-6. All for about half the price.

hmmm interestin!

edde - we may have to make a trip to a local auction ;)

Every thursday there a big one local to me (I think its Thursday) I'll have a look into it if you want.
Parents have a Rover 25 great car £1.2k or so 100k all belts down I realy like it great car realy. Pkus it had a warently on it and 18 month MOT (next MOT and any work it needs is free).

I know a cheap scooter for sale £600 I think the bloke wants for it no miles almost on it bought for his daughter who never used it now thats cheap to run.

If your trying to save money or buy a cheap only car get something very cheap and boring no boy racer etc buy diesels a good start smaller the better for mpg hence why Corsa/Novas a good idea plus if you want you could always turn it into the track car cheaper than making the 172 a track car with a red top so 150hp cage it up adjutable top mounts and coilovers are cheaper and more common. Say £1k also can park one anywhere realy unlike th 172 where you'd be worried about it.

^ thats what i'm thinking, with me working ina big retail park, the doors always get dented by trolleys etc, despite me taking up three spaces ;)

your parents rover sounds like a bargain, if you have a scout round the auction for me and let me know what there is that would be great. Anything thats cheap reliable and preferably diesel is good. Obviously i wont know until i find out if the car is a write off or not if i'll need one or not, which will be this week. If your still coming the meet on sunday though we can discuss it then ;)

Mk1's are great though no more Mk1 **** offs I loved my old one for all problems.

Its not a good idea a sporty old car particuly one a French one being a first car. Second car there great.

You do get good ones though which are more reliable than most new cars get a good one and your laughing but..

  Vee dub
Mines been superb over more than 2 years as my one and only car....

mind you.... i got a good one...

For less than a grand... i'd stay clear of a valver/willy tbh..

No chnace of going to the auction though I'll only get tempted plus no free time realy.

I'll be there Sunday.

lol, nothing wrong with temptation, and i forgot what a busy man you are ;)

to be honest cheap rovers etc. are two a penny round here at the mo, i'll just have to have a read up of what to look for etc.

Have a ph2 5 door RT going can have it for £200 notes if you come and take it off my hands.

Completely standard. Been sitting a while needs MOT, new tires and a service (air filter etc) wouldnt do it any harm.

Good runner only problem is a bit of rust on rear arches (have couple of cans of paint i can throw in) was going to do it up but just havnt got the time/ effort atm.

Just a thought.:)

*Edit also if you want any service parts can pick them up at work for trade price and chuck them on the back seat for you :)*

Look for rust on the front subframes parents one seems to have got a bit thn again 111k in a 8 year old car or so whats to be expected.

You caught me out yep busy at work nothing else I'm a dull guy.

  Chocolate Bar™
lol, cheers edde.

bailey - what sort of mileage etc has it done? probelm is i'm in stoke so would be pointless me spending 50 odd quid on petrol/train fares to pick it up when its only worth 200 quid lol

  BMW E46 330i Touring
I'd really recommend just getting something 1litre, cheap to run, insure, cheap parts, easy to fix, and put all the cash towards your sunflower Mark, if you're keeping it and repairing it. No point spending cash on a fun car that you only want for 6-12 months...

So, you keeping your wheels then? ;)

EDIT: Old Micra's, indestructable! And the engine is tiny in the bay so it's soooo easy to work on. Had a new front wing, exhaust and recon'd gearbox bought and fitted for £250.

  Chocolate Bar™
micras are tooooo embaressing. i've been looking at seicento sportings though for about a grand ;) The wheels are staying yeah lol.

You've just got to high standard I forgot a Micra I had one for ages the olsd style I realy liked it.

Seriously, they're awesome fun. And how can you say Micra's are embarassing when you're looking at Seicento Sportings!?! I owned both a Micra and a Cinque Sporting and the Micra is by far the less embarassing car! People think you don't car what you drive, where the Sporting range suggests you've picked it because you actually want to drive it...
