I was going to over the weekend, luckily my Jack wouldn’t fit under the car and I couldn’t be arsed to pull the wheels onto the plates. I’m going to this week. I’m expecting a s**t show! But I do know the previous owner spent some time underneath it. Shall I post pictures of the expected horror show?

Christ I have been s**t at keeping this updated, but to be honest work has been hectic, so just been doing some fairly boring jobs which don’t really add value to thread until they are finished.
I have dropped the passenger front wing and side skirt off the car. I’m lucky my jacking points are nice and straight. But there is some surface corrosion which needs tidying. Glad I removed everything as I can now address some local areas of corrosion. There isn’t a lot and to be honest most normal humans would just ignore them they are that tiny, but I’m turning into a complete anal retentive mong.

whilst I had the wing off I noticed the Horn was a bloody mess, it worked but was corroded as hell. So I bought another from a breaker and give it a tidy upbefore refitting.

next up the abs brackets on the front shock body were basically dust, so a stainless pair were sourced and fitted.

the surface rust on the sill needed tidying up where the crap gathers between it and wing. Luckily this is all covered so preventative work now and a repaint should see it well.

So realising I have missed loads of updates this is a it all over the place. I have been working away tidying under the bonnet.
The car came with a home brew induction kit, whilst it worked perfectly I didn’t like how messy it looked. So ordered a silicone all in one kit and new Ram air filter JMRS seemed to offer a similar kit to the KTR version, but much cheaper and really well finished.

Couple of things that have annoyed me since purchasing the car. First off was the broken battery terminal cover, not really a problem as it’s covered with the battery box. However in winter mode the battery cover is off and it drives me crackers. Also the fuse box had the standard broken tab. Local (ish) to me is an old fashion car breakers “Harry Bucklands” I picked up a nice little swag load for a fiver from him. A non broken fuse box, battery terminal cover, new bonnet seals and a 1.2 8v heat shield.

This meant I could sack off the bulkhead heat shielding which was showing it’s age.

once I have finished tidying the sills I will get everything put back together properly and photographed, butI keep digging up more little jobs, guess that’s what winters are for!

Also, looking great - next time you change your coolant I can recommend getting a new reservoir, they cheer the engine bay up so much. I think I bough mine from ECP for a daft £12.
I have one sat in the garage, with the Type D coolant ready to tackle that job mate. Just need to order a new thermostat and some new hose clips, then I will crack on with it.

That’s basically my setup, just with Eibach springs. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade in my opinion

Did you have any problems getting the nuts off the fuse box housing, mine are right crusty little mounds of rust, cant even get a socket on them.

Sunday I managed to grab a couple of hours, whilst wife was at the in-laws with the kids.

I had purchased a battery cover from a chap making them on Facebook. Quality is brilliant, however I was a bit miffed that it’s made out of steel, expecting it to be made out of alloy...regardless I am where I am with it for the time being and I can’t grumble too much as it looks smart enough! I made some new brackets to ensure the induction kit doesn’t rattle around too much

oh and fitted a nice rubber bung on the acoustic valve port thanks to @frayz for supplying me one, the best over and cable toed hose was hammering my OCD every time I lifted the bonnet.

final job for the week was removal of the OE badges and fitment of a newer style Renaultsport badge. I prefer the cleaner look with less badges and stickers everywhere so pretty happy with that.

almost forgot...earlier in the week I had repaired all the spots of corrosion under the bonnet and fitted a new bonnet catch.

I will continue to tidy up under the bonnet over the coming weeks. Next upgrade will be some Proam exhaust brackets as mine look well past it and the exhaust is more misaligned than my teeth (I’m from Gloucestershire, so it’s a genetic thing) oh and new number plates are ordered!! I can’t cope with how busy the current ones are on the car!!
That under bonnet clean is ace 👌 On my list of jobs to do.

So work continues. I have come to the realisation that I am absolute dog s**t at taking before and after photos! I finished the passenger side sill refresh as well as the wheel arch and brake calliper repaint in silver. But took next to no pictures!! Bloody useless!

I also swapped my drivers seat. For one with less bolster wear, it’s not perfect but better...again no photos despite swapping the base over so making one better seat!

I have now fitted my 1.2 heat shield, replacement radiator brackets and the little plastic piece for the bonnet catch.

whilst removing the front wings to clean up bumper brackets and the wheel arches I noticed that the alarm ‘drip’ protector had perished. So I created a template and made a new one. Annoyingly putting everything back together I noticed a pool of water under the car! Looks like I knocked a hose off the washer bottle, so need to take everything apart again

excuse the minging piece of card! I grabbed a scabby box out of the recycling bin 😆

I have started on the drivers wheel arch and sill. Luckily I caught this when I did, it’s all surface rust currently, but the bumper bracket was pretty bad. I would urge others to keep an eye on theirs as I think in future these could be problematic. Still sorted now. More pics to follow when complete.

I have a new rivnut gun coming, which means I can sort some of the annoying number attachments. The previous owner replaced a number of nuts and bolts with stainless items. But in my opinion a rivnut would be better suited for ease of use!

Cor that’s a tough one to answer! So I’m going to say yes and no!

mechanically there is no comparison, the new car is much, much better. The body work and interior are in a much better condition. My old one needed some body shop work to really sort it and even then it wouldn’t have been as good as this car. Underneath... well the sills are straighter and better on this car, but the backend is going to need some work. Well at least to get it where I want. Which is frustrating as I had completed it on my old car! The rear beam needs dropping an properly blasting as it’s been hamerited. Plus I can see someone has undersealed it (whole car has at some point been covered in cavity wax) but underneath this are areas of corrosion. So I’m going to have to drop the beam and strip back the underseal and treat. Also noticed the handbrake cable is too bloody short on the drivers side. I’ll sort it, but it’s going to be a messy bloody job. In all honesty it doesn’t need doing. But I think I’ll tackle it next as once I sort the arches and underside that for me is the worse jobs done. I can then spend time on some of the smaller niggles and upgrades.

Well I haven’t driven mine other than in and out of the garage since then either mate! I don’t plan to now until spring. So I got some time. I want to get the underside sorted, then get it booked in for the belts in the early summer. Albeit I got to sort out the money for a loft extension and some other grown up stuff on the radar. But I’m plan on getting some use out of the old girl next year.
Be good to arrange a clio meet up and drive out across the breacons and Elan valley at some point wouldn’t it? Give something to aim for

Started to tackle the fuel filler rust issue, been putting this off to be honest, it’s not a horrific job, having tackled on my old car just messy and removing the fuel flap is always the worse part thanks to the Renault originals being made of cheese.

First of all Yes to an Elan Valley drive out next spring!

I think the rust along the rear box sections on a 182 are a lot easier to treat than on a 172 due to the lack of a spare wheel well. I've considered cutting mine out just to get access to the lipped area tight up against the well on the drivers side. Loads of rusty areas under mine from the fuel tank back and notable as (big_steve I think it was) pointed out, under the fuel and brake line clips. I had a small hole in the inner arch above the fuel cap too😬

Another boring update! Apologies, but it seems I only seem to be tackling the less glamorous jobs at the moment. I also seem unable to update my own thread, despite spending too much time on this forum! So I’m going to split the update into parts, given the photo limits. Not particularly exciting as I say.
I finally got around to finishing off the fuel filler rust. All painted and refitted with stainless hardware. Pretty happy with the finished job. All the rust was removed and what was left was treated. It was much worse than my last car. In fact despite the top sides being significantly cleaner than the first car the undersides are arguably worse 🤷🏻‍♂️. So once I cleaned the rear wheel arch area back to bare metal it was all treated and painted with a rust inhibiting primer and then black hammerite. Finally treated with Waxoil cavity wax.

Also had to drill out the snapped arch liner bolt. Same thing happened with the last car. So I popped a rivnut in.

Finally gave the arch liner a good scrub, tried my best to remove all the tar, then treated the plastics with some generic plastic stuff. I can’t remember what it’s called. Probably watered down rats piss.
