Scottish Track day 172 PH1.

  Clio 172
So i just won the Scottish Hillclimb A2 Road Class in the old girl. Its been an eventful season with a diff explosion being the worst mechanical we had but it held together pretty well for most of the season.

So here are some pics and vid's of the season.

First up was a test trackday at knockhill which highlighted a faulty rev counter and knackered radiator temp switch.

First event was Doune hillclimb where we bagged 2 firsts a 2nd and a 3rd ( I should add i've been sharing the car with my nephew.

Some further testing at a local track had us changing the spring rates to stiffen the car up as we we're starting to run on the tyre sidewalls!. I went for 825lbs up front and fitted gaz coilovers with 450lbs on the rear. It was then corner weighted and setup by ex british hillclimb champ and car builder Graeme Wight Junior, The difference was amazing and we instantly had way more grip due to the tyres working as they should now.

Next event was Fintray hillclimb where we again got class wins and 2nd places on both days.

I had a wee off on the first practice, still don't know what happened but it woke me up!.

For the next round at Doune we fitted a PMS shifter, Awesome piece of kit.

This was a wasted weekend as we had major oversteer problems from the start which turned out to be a loose camber bolt!, Then on the first timed run the diff went bang on the start line!. End of play.
On the search for gearbox to run until the new diff was fitted into the 'good' box i picked up some spares from a local lad who broke a Ph1, The caddy sure is handy.

I did the next round Forrestburn with a standard Ph1 box and the car felt really slow but i managed a 4th which was not bad considering i'd never been there before and had an open diff.

We had a further trip back to Fintray where we got a class win and a 2nd and two 3rd's, Got pipped by 2tenths by a Starlet Glanza of all things running 280bhp from a 1.3l!!
Then it was back to Forrestburn and we could only manage a 2nd and 4th place, Its a tough hill to master but we will get there in the end.

So last weekend was the final round at Doune and what a weekend it was, The National British champ big single seaters where there and it seems to spur everyone on as class records where getting smashed all weekend.
I started the day on a 54.36 and ended on a 50.29 which is .98sec inside the class record and my PB for the hill, Unfortunately it doesn't stand as i have the wrong license so the old record still stands. The Clio was running sweet all weekend and not even a broken gearbox mount slowed it down. The boys in the B2 modified class are keen to see me in their class next year and reckon with slicks and a lot of weight saving i could be quite competitive.

Anyway here is my fastest run up the hill. Sorry about the shreaks at the end but the adrenaline was pumping hard!

So thats it for the year and a winter rebuild beckons, only thing now is which direction do i go with the car as B2 class would mean the car is no longer road worthy.

Just as a comparison this is a car built by the lad who setup my Clio doing a Hill record breaking run. HOLD ON TIGHT!
