sonny172cup "track car to race car project"

@Grant89 I broke down a few years ago en-route there and a few of us hired Clio cups for the day, again I have also been int he Swifts, we used to have Swift Wars...fun when there is a pack of them.

Deffo be good to see another ClioSporter on the Grid....but dont say it, do it. ;)

Its not expensive to run in the series, but its a good idea to have a "pool" of money in case for repairs etc...normal running costs are to expected etc

Update March 2014

Ok so we are back on track....

Picked up my gear box yesterday from CodeRed, box needed opening up to investigate why I had lost reverse gear (due to the knock it received at last years Donny race), after a lot of time and effort my Matt, replacing parts and stripping and assembling the box together he finally found the problem, we initially suspected a damaged selector fork but it turns out to be the spindle that the gear-set is on..so he replaced the whole gear set with one of his spares. (maybe Matt can explain more on findings).

He had found my 4th gear to be burred around the edges, this must have happened on the race or at the 2 test days at Spa (car had only seen 3 track days).

Service from Matt has been second to none, so many thanks Matt.

I was due to have the 33/37 ratio gear installed, the parts turned up, but the box had been packaged up incorrectly and was supplied with a 39th 5th gear....so without wanting to waste any time, I took the box away to install on the car, while Adam sources the correct part.Bit pissed off, but such is life.

So today I popped the box back in, car now has a lightened flywheel and new clutch. I still need to plumb the rest of the coolant system in along with the drive shafts and wiring etc, I ran out of time before having to start work.

So only jobs to do, is to install new year discs and pads and cut the grooves into DS300 front pads and we are good to go.

I have a test day booked at Rockingham next week on the 20th, so looking forward to that.

sonny172cup Lol the Swift wars sound like epic fun although their huge excesses put me off even trying one, heard a horror story when we were over there on one of our trips, a couple of lads hired them and somehow came together on the exit of Karussell and literally scuffed the front wing of each, nothing more yet still had to pay the full excess each! Not saying I'd do that lol but even the rev limiter things scare me a bit :S

Haha, I like that saying, applies to a lot of things I do I'd say :)

I really would love to and would love to get out on the grid with all of you boys, there's money there to cover any issues if any crop up, I just need to finish building the car to spec and then see where I stand at the point of it being race ready.

It's a shame to hear about the issues you've had with yours but hopefully its all right as rain again soon!

Car is all loaded up ready for tomorrow test day at Rockingham.

Past few weeks have been very busy getting the car race ready. This week I have fitted new all rounds discs and pads and now back to running spacers again, 10mm rear and 15mm fronts. Took the car for a road test drive and all seems good.

Looking forward to getting back out on track now.

Good luck Sonny.

Did you get the correct 5th gear parts in the end?

Nope... I have to send the original one back in order for them to send new one out.. Totally pi**ed off about that as im now testing without the correct components. I will get it sorted for the first race.

Iv been working 14 hr night shifts past week, with that and trying to get jobs done on the car its been hard finding time galavanting to post offices and crap... Anyway...

What a pain!

Were those part numbers right then?

I will need the same 5th gear for mine soon.

Yesterdays Test at Rockingham went well, I booked the whole day I only spent a few hours there, about an hour on track in all. Spent time just getting to know the circuit really, not doing no crazy ten tenth stuff.... Last session I put in some hot laps.

Car was fine, the new additional light weight fly wheel was really noticeable esp when it came to heal and toe and engine breaking so that's a mod im happy with. Also made a drivers foot plate to bring the heals up closer and also added the new KTEC front strut brace that bolts onto the ktec struts.

I also finally received my spacers from Dan MAD....thought it was going to be next year by the time they was sent out...anyway...received and fitted. Went for 15mm fronts and 10mm rear (behind hind hub with -1 degree).

All this made yesterday good and has put my confidence back in myself and the car.

It was a nice dry sunny day yesterday, so perfect track conditions, do have a few laps on the GoPro that I will upload at a later date, but there nothing special. I didn't time my laps, but will do on once I go through the footage.

The Circuit was a lot faster than I expected..Im glad I did the test day now, so hopefully be money well spent.

The 2500's are ok, for say road and track day, never had probs with them before. But for a race they are no good. Again depends on driving/braking style I guess.

Its worth trying them out and seeing what application suits

Small update, finally installed my DRE Shift light, took me a year to pull my finger out. Simple to install and set up, not tested it yet. Not bad for £80

Bright little bugger, had to turn the brightness down to the lowest setting.

Yes G all new discs and pads all round, the DS3000 are spot on.

I bet you will quickly get a feeling like you have warped your discs with these pads. Dont panic... it isnt the discs. Its the pads. They leave build up on the discs.

I binned two sets of discs before realising its the pads that were a problem. I wouldn't use these pads again because of this and lots of other people have found same problem mate.

I use DS3000 and have had issues with discs. I didn't realise it was a known issue with the DS3000. I would get 2/3 races to a set of discs. OEM pad shape.

Did it feel like warped? it wasnt the disc :( its build up of pad material.

Sonny, Wilwoods on mine, but I know of people with issues on std cailpers. sounds like Mark123 above is another.

I'm upgrading mine to the spunky Alcons that James has for no other reason than I have bling brake envy as our cars have been sitting next to each other with the wheels off in my garage for months now!

Just swap them. I'm sure James won't notice ;)

Interesting on the DS3000s and 'warping'. I've just fitted a set so will keep my eye on it.

Sonny the racecar looks lovely, glad it's come together and survived testing. Hopefully catch up at one of the races this year. Which ones are you doing?

Ok, well having owned an RS4 for a few years where warped discs was a norm, I think I will see how I get on after the next race meeting, they seemed good in testing last week. Saying that im more than happy to experiment. What pads you running in your Wilwoods now then? haha Alcons, nice.

Mintex F4r absolutely superb pad. Easily the best I've used on Clio.

Yes, looking forward to getting the Alcons on. James picking them up today for me and fitting next week. TOTAL waste of money. I was drunk last night and standing next to the two Clios feeling out blinged. Wallet came out lol
