Strange noise, air leaking/whistling.

Syptoms: When the engine gets warm from spirited driving I start to get a blowing kind of noise when booting it. It sounds like air leaking or something and like a whistle. Doesn't happen when cold/warm and driving normally, only when giving it some beans and when the engine is quite warm.

Diagnosis: Ideas??

All of my 172 have done it. As for what it is, i'm sorry I have no idea.

Not like this they haven't mate, trust me. I know what sound you mean, and this in addition to the normal whistle.

If you lift the bonnet up can you pinpoint the noise to a particular area?

No, because it only happens under load. Rev the engine at idle, and it doesn't do it. I may try and get my work colleague to sit on the bonnet at lunchtime whilst I boot it up the road lol.

It's a similar sound to a boost leak on a turbo car is the best way to describe it.

LOL yeah brake sharply thatl be funny.

As for the problem thats a toughie could be loads of things!

Going to pop it along to Rentech tomorrow as I'm in the area.

It could be the where the Cat joins the centre section apparently, as they have a tendency to blow. Hopefully something simple like that, and not a manifold blow.
