T4RKO 172 Cup

Well I am back from Ski-ing so today I got on with the car again so the brakes would be finished for driving back to work.

Anyway I came up against a problem with the drivers side rear. The bearing came apart and left the bearing inner sleeve on the shaft:

The passenger side came off no problem and I managed to get that all fitted together again:

I have just managed to get the bearing sleeve off with a grinder so will hopefully get it all finished tomorrow.

I bled the brakes through with new racing blue fluid but made a mistake as the rear caliper had no disc fitted and popped the piston out. School boy error but never mind. All sorted again now.

If I recall I had the same issue on my 182, it was a struggle and I was SO paranoid about the stub axle but it came off in the end thanks to a grinder.

I have just got to the bottom of it. The stub axle was flared at the end which wasn't allowing me to slide the new bearing on. I assume that someone had tightened it up without the spacer in which caused the issue. I even tried heating it up like I do at work to expend the bearing but it still wasn't having any of it and the new bearing came apart leaving the inner sleeve on again and a few rollers fell out. I managed to get the inner sleeve off the stub axle and reassemble the bearing. I had to grind and file the stub axle to allow me to get the new bearing on. It's all back together now but I am stressed that I now know the stub axle has been butchered and the bearing has been apart and reassembled in not what I would describe as an ideal environment. It doesn't feel bad now all back together so I will keep my eye on it.

Maybe one day I will go for camber or toe shims on the back so it will all have to come back off again and I will get a new assembly.

Those rear wheel bearings are a f**king pita. I've had failures after only 25 miles use!! Used SNR bearings (oe make) had the spacer at the back and I torqued them up to 175Nm as specified. Not no f**king more though!!! Got a solution sorted that retains the original stub axles and disc but uses a larger bearing. That should hopefully see an end to the failures. Grrrrr.

Rant over.

Well I managed to get everything finished in the end. I removed the carbon canister and the fog lamp from the drivers side too. I will do the passenger side when I have more time and can relocate the horns.

Prepare for a laugh!

Total d*ck head school boy error time.
What should you always do before removing axle stands and lowing the car back onto its wheels?

Put the handbrake on or at least have it in gear!

Doh!

I'm interested to know how you are going about that. Same stub axle an same disc but larger bearing? I'm puzzled and intrigued.

Ohhh that sucks big time. I've just been through the thread so to find that is a true downer!

Hope you were all okay.

I hoped it wouldn't be the end. Blue looks much better anyway! Find my iceberg a bit dull, but it was dictated by price.

Oh f**k.

Gutted for you mate, what went wrong?

Quite simply not paying attention as I was just driving along in a world of my own, 1% throttle straight road, lovely day, watching the world go by and then..... Holy Sh*t that van in front of me is stopped in the middle of the road! No ABS and just skidded into the back of a van with a big step on the back!

s**t!! Hope you didnt get too injured!

I got a sore neck for a few days and feel a bit silly for not paying attention but the van driver was fine and there was no-one else involved. It could be repairable but just a quick observation would be it need a fair few parts and the subframe is twisted, inner wings all bent, windscreen smashed, outer wings cracked and then there will be all sorts of brackets, hoses, wiring, headlights, bumper etc etc. For the sake of buying another Cup needing some TLC for less than £1000 I didn't think it was worth bothering to repair this one.

My plan is to swap over all the parts from this to another one and then sell everything left over and what I have replaced from the new one.

Main thing is that you are OK. Glad you are sticking with it and getting a replacement. Guess you are going to be getting a 1*2 with ABS now with top tyres and brakes.

Yeah the bonnet is damaged which is why I took it off so it didn't fly off when being transported.

The brakes were spot on and maybe worked too well with the instinctive reaction. ABS would have helped for sure and maybe better tyres but the tyres I had on were better than the ones I had just changed them for. No matter how good your car and brakes are you can't fix stupid!

People seem to have misunderstood my plans. I am not giving up on my project but won't be using this silver cup. I am in the process of buying another cup and the project will continue. This means all the aftermarket parts or upgrades on my current car will be getting transfered over to the new car.

Everything left from the silver cup that is salvageable will then be sold and any parts replaced from the new car sold on too.

Therefore the wheels, steering wheel, braided hoses, brake discs, brake pads etc will be getting transfered over.

Good to hear it mate, glad you walked away from the crash all ok as well. Hopefully the next cup will have a longer life!

Totally gutted to find out how rare the Silver actually was! Only 57 without climate control ever registered! I might just keep it and one day it will be like a Escort Mexico shell or something. lol

Well I am still offshore at the moment so not been able to do any hands on work but have managed to organise getting the Silver Cup back home thanks to a very long day for my Farther-in-Law which didn't cost me a penny which was also handy.

I have managed to buy a Blue 172 Cup that requires a little TLC and a dephaser so am planning on swapping the engines over for now and once the Blue cup is up and running then think about swapping all the parts over. I am looking at doing the ITB's and EPAS at the same time as the engine swap. Wish me luck as it will be the biggest project I have ever done with a car!

Also its the time of year for chicken breeding so here are some photos of my setup:

And this is what those chickens looks like when they were hatched last year:

And they live under lamps like this to keep them warm for 8 weeks until all their feathers are through:

We have almost 70 eggs in an incubator now so should have some chicks hatching in about 3 weeks time. :)

It will keep me on my toes for a while! It wasn't like I had ran out of talent it was just not paying attention! Not sure which one is worse. lol

I am getting the new Cup delivered and it hasn't cost me too much so I am hoping that by selling off any parts I don't need between the two cars it should cover the cost of buying the new one and I wont lose out too much.
