the 197 letter in evo..

  An orange one
did anyone read the letter regarding the 197 in evo, from portugal, stating that they rolling roaded a car..and it made 170bhp!! they returned it to renault..to "fix" and it still only made 182..

no wonder they are so fecking slow!! evo are going to get theirs tested soon! :) should be interesting..

come on renault...you've let the ball slip with this one :(:(

Yeah i read that....so really it has roughly the same power as the old car and its shed loads heavier.

Now it all makes sense!

Wouldn't the ambient temperature in Portugal be higher reducing output?

lol typical!

want to get mine rolling road-ed as mine seems fast.

plus had a few 'ideas' up my sleeve ;) but still unsure.

170 is shite! lol that would be thesame pace as mk2 172 chavchariot would it not? ;) (banter!)

  '03 172, now a 2004 CTR
there was also another letter about a chap who was considering a gti-6 or a 172, evo opted for the 172 :D

Calm it with comments like that son. It's not my fault my girl wagon is faster than your new Yaris. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones :rasp:

can i just say...I am not a 197 hater, I love the looks, the gearbox, the seats, the handling...

but having test drove 2 extensively...jesus..they need some more uumph!

If renault put the 230 lump in one, in liquid yellow with recaro's and H&R springs..id consider selling the vee in the future for one! the megane looks still dont do it for me!

lol all banter! ;)

my 197 is definetely as fast as my 182 imo, but i don't go in for all this tenting about times and what evo thinks. i go on my own judgements tbh.

that is still i shite rolling road figure tbh.

i don't know where people get this slow crpa stuff from. mine pulls like a f**king rocket.

when you keep it redlining it coems to f**king life! it is amazing, i feel like some sort of god behind the wheel. lol :)

ah well, i enjoy the banter etc i am happy knoeing i have the best hot hatch. don't care about anyone slating it as i know they are wrong!

shall we get back to the rolling road figures or keep going on about how the 197 is shite?

I was just going to say that..this topic is not about the car..its about the power its apparently not making..

I think if the 197 genuinely had that..it would be a stormer!

this is why i am keen to see what power mine has tbh. i doubt i have 194bhp as most RS' don't make power, but i must be close! either thta or my 182 was low on power... prob both tbh.

but saying thta my 182 felt very quick, kept up with my bros 182 and variosu other cars with similar performance etc.

RE: OE Post

Colin mu old friend. For a supposed car enthusiast you are out of touch. Maybe its all that cleaning?

All cars do not give the manufacturers claimed power figures.

All engines are bench tested without gearbox etc so 197 for example refers to power at the flywheel.

182 I suspect will be at the wheels which is fantastic. Even 170 at the wheels is good.

BTW a 172/182 has transmission losses as wheel hence RR figures for standard cars will show approx 13-/140 at the wheels, not 172/182 as so many of you clearly think.....(roll eyes)

Do some research into engine power figures and transmission losses....for starters.

As long as YOU think its fast, i really don't think it matters, but i still reckon the 172 "chavchariot" would show it a clean pair of heels.

Well mine would....ooooh the controversey!

Are the 197 owners gettin all defensive because they feel like they have to justify all that money in the light of some bad press?

£12895 for a full spec 197 is pretty good money I think...;)

A MK1 172 would probably show a 197, 182, 172, V6 a good run.....agreed.....they were the fastest of them all! At the end of the day thye're all pretty much similar and in the real world noone is going anywhere with standard cars.

tim, most rolling roads ive seen have quoted power at the flywheel! so thats probably the case there too! :)

Well that price is a lot less than it was 6 months ago!

This really is futile all this "mines faster than yours" molarky....good banter but futile.

I'd love the 197's quality in my Cup, but thats about it....i prefer the rawness, but i have utter respect for it as a piece of engineering and as a well sorted car, but no matter what people say to me, its still that 'difficult 3rd album' Clio.

The 1st one (Williams) was fantastic, the 2nd (Cup,Trophy) was the new benchmark and then with the 197 being 3rd, Renault did what all decent rock bands on a wave of previous success did, got it half right but let the success go to their head, got fat and didn't quite better their last effort....

Ahh my overactive imagination

Power at the fly from a rolling road is just a guesstimate. How is a machine thats calculating power from the wheels gonna get it spot on what the cars doing at the fly? And loads of little things can change that power figure.

Different size wheels / tyres. Different weight of wheels. Different amounts of air in the tyres. Rolling road figures are to be taken with a pinch of salt.

And 182 at the wheels would be over 200bhp. If that was an at the wheels figure.

197 is at the fly and 182/172 is at the fly too.
this is my 197 at the wheels before and after remap...

I'm sure when the 197 first came out i read somewhere that the 197 wasn't the bhp it stands for the amount of downforce generated by the rear defuser and that it had 182bhp, so the re-tested portugese car was right second time round

lol just fdighting the corner for my car matey ;) i feel it is only fair to give a balanced argument due to all the 197 bashing that goes on.

I don't have to justify my purchase to anyone apart from myself. I did thta the first day i got my 197! love it! :)

I thought the 197 allegedly had 194 bhp?

indeed hence the name, i thought that equated to 194bhp. may well be wrong though.

These argumentative chaps just need to get to Santa Pod and do a head-to-head. Then there will be no arguments!
