Snetterton 30-3-2012, Track day and ARDS for Sam and Pete.
Was a good day all round, weather looked like another hot one but it cooled to around 12 degrees slightly overcast but was (I think) perfect. Cup was good all day, though the pax side nut that holds the front suspension into the AST top mount keeps unwinding, have to get some lock wire or loctite on there me thinks. With the new cams have a lot more straight line speed and had the edge on most of the Clios there but for some reason I kept watching them in the rear view mirror and then loosing any gains in the turns.....got to stop that..maybe the novelty of these new cams will wear off soon. Think I miffed a few of them off as had to let them pass on a few occasions...think it was the rate I left them behind out of corners, with all the tuition and I think I have got to grips (sort of) with trail braking, the Cup is pointing in a straight line (sooner) round a bend and I can get full power down a lot sooner. Though must still wait for the corner to come to me and not the other way round...
Now running a lot faster round Snetterton, as long as there was no traffic having carried enough speed could stay in third for all the corners, lots less to do now, with the extra torque and power available.....maybe I will get some TB's over winter...
The Piper Stealth measured 98db at the noise test.
Sam had a good day too, shift lights work well for her, though on the time that I pax'd round with her she is a bit too agricultural with her down shifts and sometimes up shifts too. Actually spending the hours with instructors seemed to bring home that an unsettled car is harder to control than a balanced one. Neither of us can heel and toe..not even tried yet, far too much going on and that's next on the challenge list. With out prompting she had already worked out the difference with the car and no need for using 2nd on the track and that to stay in forth for the 1st corner. It was a manic day with over 100 cars and I think in total around 12 red flags, with some quite bad accidents and one run out of fuel incident...every one was getting a bit frustrated with the standard of some peoples driving.
Here's a vid of the Cup from the pit wall, Sam's driving.
We completed our ARDS tests too, both passed and now just have medicals to do and get the licence application form sent off.
Got bit of post day checks to do today and then get the Cup back in the barn and get ready for Brands on May the 7th...
Still unsure whether to replace the front tyres on the Cup, they performed well yesterday and they still have tread bars showing, I'm taking the Cup to the CSCC fist race (for scrutineer checks) on the 14th so will leave them on and see what they say.
