Trophy vs 197 Cup my view.

Well coming from owning a trophy for 2 yrs+ (172 before for 2yrs) the 197 Cup i have now is more than a match for the trophy.

Standard no mods or sticky tyres all i can say is 'wow'.

The brakes are what the trophy needed from day day one, more feel & masses more stopping power that is endless, with no fade. (maybe my driving style)

The extra width stance & track also has the effect of removing the twitchyness i used to experience with my trophy. (anyone who i have taken for a test drive in the trophy will vouch for this )

Yes it is heavier but compared to Silverstone last year in the 'modded' trophy not far behind . Once i sort the tyres it should be more than a match.

The gearbox, chassis & brakes are what makes this car.

The memories of the trophy are fantastic but time moves on & so does technology.

For me this car is the replacemant i have been looking for for the last yr, dismissed at first after 20 min test drive. But after 45 mins at RS trackday i knew this was what i was looking for.

Prepares for the flaming

no flames here!! I was behind a Trophy round the evo when mine just had an exhaust!! Nothing in it.

I used to pester Lee which he thought was better and essentially he has said the same thing as you.

I would have a 197 its honestly just the petrol I cannot get over. I recently raped mine on a whole tank and did town driving and got 33mpg which is what a 197 gets on average, maybe I am missing the point.

LOL @ 197 Fuel, I used to see 24 average in mine.

Steve, nice to read that mate. It Echoes my thoughts exactly. :)

i know my cup is quicker (moded) but all the things i hear about them its got to be done! then i go round in a megane r26 and an atom supercharge aha mental fun as my dads mate has one hehe

Likewise, was not impressed much by a test drive at the dealer, but after a back to back drive at RS trackdays with my 182 I have no doubt the 197 is the better, faster car.

^^you just have to cross the barrier and realise your stepping out a great car to an even greater car!;)

Excellent. I drove my sisters 182 for a good few miles yesterday. The thing i missed most from the 197..... gearchange. The MK2 it just felt sticky with a stupidly long throw. Close ratio shot throw change ftw!!!

haven't had the joy of driving a 197 cup yet but i have driven a ff 197 f1 and what a fantastic drive! the brakes are great. my 182 needs brakes like that, build quality seems much improved too. i would love to own a 197 cup one day.

Take it the gearbox on the 197 is better then?

182s is w**k, the generall notchyness is annoying me greatly at the moment.

Cant comment on the 197 cup but, I like the gearbox on the 182's, ive owned a 182 and now a 182 Trophy.
I have drove my mates R27 a few times and love it, (not as much as the Trophy), build quality is better, brakes are mint, cornering seems similar to the Trophy, but i think the R27 just lacked that special something, cant put my finger on it but the Trophy just feels more fun. Had a play with 3 different 197 in a straight line, 2x R27 and a normal 197, off the mark the Trophy was ever so slightly quicker but nothing to write home about, mid range was the same and top end the Trophy was quicker. In the twisty bits there is no difference, that old chestnut of down to the driver!
Got to say i like the 197, love the R27 but cup looks awsome. I always said i would get a R27 next but now think it would have to be the cup, never selling the Trophy though.

Good to see people starting to admit the 197 is a better car, the only thing I miss from previous Clio's is the raw-ness and sensation of speed.

Hows that than? Its the same car minus colour coding?

as soon as u get 4000rpm and beyond the 197s transform into an absolute animal!!!

Had my 197 for a few days and i'm never ever gonna get bored of it. I do think the noise u get when u give it some right foot is lovely!!!

I just added the, I cant comment on the cup, bit incase someone wrote that the thread was about the cup not the R27. I realise they are mopre or less the same car but there was bount to be someone who picked up on it. As for the cup looking better a meant the ones i have seen look better than the R27's ive seen, i.e. white with black wheels and spoiler.

  Was a 197
Cup you don't get soft touch dash, chrome stuff on interior, air con as standard but is an option and you have a key, rather than the card, all of that saves around 20kgs. The R27 is basically all the options minus the spoiler pack, not sure about xenons and chrome/smokers pack.

  182 Trophy (#27/500)
Ive not driven a cup but i did test drive an F1. I love the 197 and would love to own one, just not sure if it will still give me the same feeling as the Trophy.

I can plough up and down the motorway all day in it, no problems, then pull onto b-roads and its a quick as most cars, then back to cruising on motorway.

Its this adaptability and flexibility that i love the most about the Trophy. Does you 197 do this??

Its calm when i want to be, and it mental when i dont!!

Thanks for all the comments, glad it didn't turn into the usual slanging match

It's buzzy at appearing in the dock speeds but rides better, defo calmer place to be. Less squeaks & rattles for sure have a go in one but not just a 10 min test.

The more i drive it the more i feel i have been missing out.

Trophy was good, but box, brakes & chassis let it down.

Renault seem to have taken on board what was good & carried it over with some improvements along the way.

I'm not intersted in being a traffic light hero for me the track is where these cars need to be.

I am off for a test drive in a 197 cup and a Meg R26 today. Going to see how they compare. I am not changing car until the end of the year but I am off work so thought I d go assess thenew breed! Might hold on for a 200, though.

Must admit the 197 cup in white is a fantastic looking hot hatch.
