Ultra Red 197 F1 Photoshoot

Trailerparktrev was kind enough to bring his new 197 to my neck of the woods for a few photos today. As luck would have it I found an old petrol station (2 minutes from my house!) when I was going to meet him, so we got some photos there and also around West Wilts Trading Estate...

question...how did you get the bright cloud definition as well as keep the car bright too, if you know what i mean. if you could point me in the right direction of what settings to change. cheers

Yes I know what you mean, usually the sky would be blown out (pure white) when the car is properly coloured. I used a polarizing filter when the sun was out, that darkens the sky and also cuts through reflections in the car windows/paint. When it was cloudy I spot metered (I use matrix metering when sunny with a polarizer) on the car and my D50 has always been pretty good at handling that.

Polarizers are fantastic though, mine cost £12 and really brings out the colours, mainly due to it cutting through reflections.

I see where you're coming from, for motorsports I always aim for pin-sharp, but I fancied something a bit different for these (at 30mph they look a bit dull when sharp!) and quite like the effect.

one question on that link you can buy pictures from the site, what s the difference from viewing the largest-saving that-printing out on your own quality printer or just using as desktop background ?

cheers

No difference really, it's just that Smugmug has the facility (although it's US based) to order prints directly, and I haven't investigated how to switch off that function yet.

All my pics are free at full-res and always have been, however I can see how many are downloaded at which size so I keep an eye on things to see how popular certain images are (after an Airfield meet I get about 1GB of downloads within a few days!). A few people have found my site and have been honest enough to offer to buy pics which I then do through Photobox (including Mosler which I was a bit chuffed about!) so it works ok for me, I'm not in it for the money. I did debate things after the last New York trip as they were incredibly popular and have made me a lot of money, but I think it's best to leave it as is.

Chris... I think I need some Inferno photos.

Do you charge much to do a shoot like this?

I love this picture... you did similar with the yellow one a while back with similar perspective..

Just a nice car delivered to the Wiltshire area :) I want to improve and build up a portfolio so I just like the practice really (plus I love doing it) so there is no charge, to be honest I'm flattered when someone asks, that's enough for me! 50 'good' pics takes about 2 hours, I take about 250 and keep 1 in 5 or thereabouts.

I want to do a night shoot at some point, got loads of ideas for one.

will be in contact mate... although its probably hit and miss with the weather this time of year. Would love a series of shots taken of the Inferno and you're not too far from sunny Bournemouth.

Just Jessops or an online camera store for filters, what camera do you have? There are different thread sizes you need to match with your camera and/or lens.

Oct-March is the best time of year weather-wise (as long as you get a reasonable day!), sun is way too harsh during the summer. We got lucky today, perfect as we had cloud cover which is good for some shots and then sunshine which is good for others.
